Chosen Family: Myrtle Peyton #52Ancestors 52 Weeks

I  was thinking about one of my DNA cousins. His match confirmed someone on my Bartlett family tree. It was an answer to my prayers. I was on the right track and on my quest in making discoveries  along the paper trail.

To make a long story short. I was wondering who were the parents of Myrtle Peyton. I first came across her on the 1900 census. She was listed a mulatto born about 1886 in Kansas. She was the granddaughter of Harriet  BARTLETT.  Harriet was my Great Grandmother.

I have a list of Harriet's children and of her husband Elias' children to a prior marriage. I narrowed it down to Lucy or Sallie. And I made a lot of discoveries while I was searching for Myrtle's parents.

I searched from Myrtle Peyton and discovered that she marriage a William Younger.  Lucile Mossell who was a witness to their marriage. Lucile "Lucy" was Myrtle's aunt through the Bartlett family.

I came across a Wade PEYTON who listed Myrtle Younger as a next of kin on  a WWII draft card.  Then I started searching for Wade through the Kansas censuses. I discovered that Wade was the son of Wade Hampton. Peyton Sr. (1850 - 1887) and Sarah (Bartlett) Peyton.

In all Myrtle and William had two daughters, Uldene and Gaynell. They later divorced. Myrtle married Earl C. MILLER. On Myrtle's marriage licence to Earl, it stated that Myrtle's mother, Sarah's maiden name was Shaw. I haven't found the place or year of Sarah's death.

I can assume that Sarah "Sallie's" mother was Rachel Shaw. Rachel was Elias' first wife while they were enslaved. I believe that Elias and Harriet were married on Dec 29, 1876 in Carrollton, Missouri.  Myrtle was  most likely Harriet's step granddaughter.

I haven't had any contact with my DNA cousin. I have emailed him. He did have  Uldene Younger  (1901 1991) on his family tree, She was born in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Here's my  Project: The Elias W. Bartlett  Sr. Connections,
I'm still searching for clues.

I hope that you can make some connections with long lost relatives.

Thanks for reading.

Family isn't always related by blood. Adoptions, step-children, foster children, and special friends of the family can be just as much "family" as those who share DNA. This is the week to highlight one of their stories. via  Genealogy Cafe on facebook.

The Elias W. Bartlett Sr Family Connections: Charles Bartlett

Some time ago, I was searching the Missouri Death Records. I came across a Charles Bartlett. His race was black. He was born on August 28 1866 in Carrollton, Missouri. He passed on May 19, 1944 in Brookfield, Missouri. His parents were unknown.

As I read Charles' death record, I thought that he could have been one of the Bartlett connections. I believed that this Charles was the son of Elias W. Bartlett Sr. I didn't have any proof of that.

Through the years, I've been searching for info on the Bartlett connections in  Missouri. I remember my father telling me that  one of his Aunts moved to Brookfield. I assume that was his Lucy Mossell.

I started to search for Charles Bartlett in MO.There were two Charles Bartletts. I narrowed him down.  The one I found was married an Isabelle / Isabella Queensberry on November 29, 1894 in Brookfield, MO.  (I couldn't located them on the 1900 census.)

I later found Charles and his wife on the 1910 census. Charles and his two sons were listed as mulatto. The sons' names were Chancey Harold Bartlett who was born about 1900. And Roy C. Bartlett who was born about 1906 in MO.

Also I found Charles and his wife Isabella on the 1920 , 1930 and 1940 censuses in Brookfield, Missouri. They were listed on some of the city directories in Brookfield. According to Charles's death record he worked with Southwestern Bell.

It wasn't until June of 2014 when I made a breakthrough on the Bartletts. I come across the connection on who Charles' Bartlett was. I was reading a 1940 obituary that mentioned him as a brother who was living in Brookfield, Missouri. I was overwhelmed by that.

You know, I got more out of that obituary than what I was searching for. I was amazed to see my Great Aunt Lucy Horan's obituary. Yes, I got the confirmation on who Charles was.

I'm thankful for old newspapers. I think that there's more info out there in the newspapers. It's more than what I can image. I hope that I will find more clues on my family history. And even more descendants of Elias W. Bartlett Sr.

Staying On The Journey...

Searching For Family Connections: The Sarah "Sallie" Bartlett - Peyton Family

I've been searching for info on a Sallie BARTLETT for years. All I knew about her was that she was the daughter of Elias BARTLETT. She was born about 1866 in Missouri. Her mother's first name may have been Rachel.

Over the years, I have had trouble finding leads on Sallie. I tried piecing what I knew together. But,  I thought I wouldn't find any more on her. So, I begin to search from what I knew on the Bartlett's.

At some point in my search, I came across a (mulatto)  child named Myrtle PEYTON. She was the granddaughter of Harriet (HOOPER) BARTLETT. Myrtle was born about 1886 in Kansas. I figured that one of Harriet's daughter married a PEYTON. And I worked from there.

I first came across Myrtle on the 1900 census with the Bartlett family. Later, I discovered that Myrtle at age 17, married a William YOUNGER in Buchanan County in Missouri. Also there was a Lucile Mossell who was a witness to their marriage.  Lucile "Lucy" was Myrtle's aunt through the Bartlett connections.

I kept trying to locate a Myrtle Peyton. Which daughter of Harriet's could have been Myrtle's mother? I narrowed it down to two. Lucy or Sallie. I search for both. I kept coming up hitting brick walls. I still couldn't connect.  I took a break from searching for Myrtle.

Somehow, I kept looking for other Bartletts and Peytons. I came across a Wade Hampton PEYTON with his parents. His mother's name was Sallie. Wade was named after his father. I kept searching for Sallie and Wade.

As I kept searching, I came across Wade Jr's WWII draft card. I didn't know what I would find out.  But low and behold.... The next of kin on  his record was Myrtle Younger. Yes, that was his sister. Then this lead my search for Sallie.... I discovered that her name was Sarah.

I later made discoveries on the PEYTON Family Connections.  Oh what great joy that was!  I continue to search for the PEYTON Family. It was interesting to have found out that Myrtle's brother , Wade Hampton Peyton Jr. was a doctor.

As for Myrtle, she and William had two daughters. Myrtle later divorced William. She later married  Earl C. MILLER. On Myrtle's marriage licence to Earl, it stated that Myrtle's  mother, Sarah's maiden name was Shaw.  Now, that got me to thinking. Who was Sarah's mother?

The Search Continues... See Any Connections?

I'm hoping to find more on the BARTLETT- PEYTON Family Connections. I believe that there are descendants out there. Myrtle's daughter's married names were Taylor and Duke. I hope that someone will have more info. Perhaps that someone is you.

May the Lord grant the hunger in people to search for their ancestors. May there be leads to follow. May the beauty of the Lord brings surprises along the journey. Amen!

Thanks for reading
Family Connections: The Sarah "Sallie" Bartlett - Peyton Family: One final note:Oral history: I recall my parents say that one of Jennie (Bartlett) Blakley Lyle's sister married a doctor.
I haven't found info on that sister.
Who was Jennie? She was the sister of Sallie and Lucy.

Searching For The Elias W. Bartlett Sr. Family Connections

It's Pentecost Sunday!
Happy Birthday Church!

My Family Connections Journey:
I'm still on the journey searching for Family Connections.
I've been working on The Elias W. Bartlett Sr. Family Connections.

Little is known about Elias W. Bartlett Sr. He was most likely to have been born into slavery about 1822 in Kentucky. He lived to see freedom. He was a farmer by trade. He was listed on the 1870 and 1880 censuses in Carroll County in Missouri. He was married at least twice.

Elias Bartlett's first marriage was most likely during slavery. He was married to Rachel Bartlett, perhaps in the early 1850's or earlier. According to the 1870, Elias was listed with Rachel and children: Warren, John, Fanny, Lena, and Harriet. We can assume that they were a family. Children born from 1852 to 1865. No other record of these children were found on the 1880 census.

I believe that there could have been more children born between 1852 - 1865. Not for sure if Rachel was the mother of all the children. Elias was believed to have been the father of about 14.

According to the 1880 Elias was married to Harriett. Elias' children were listed as Sally, Charles and Lucy   Elias W. Jr,  and William. ~ Only Elias Jr. was Harriett's child. The others appeared to have had a different mother. (Not for sure if William was Warren from the 1870.) Children born from 1854 to 1879. Sally Charles and Lucy may have had a different mother. They were listed as mulatto in other records on them.

Elias Bartlett Sr. may have passed away sometime in the mid 1890's. He was not listed on the 1900 census. His widow, Harriet was listed on the 1900 census in St. Joseph, MO with children  Lucy, Elias Jr.,  Sam, Jennie , Paul and Juanita . Harriett was listed as having 7 children, only 6 were living.

Other findings: Thoughts

On the 1900 census, Harriett was listed with a granddaughter, Myrtle Peyton.
Myrtle could have been the daughter of her daughter that passed.

I believe that Elias W. Bartlett Sr. could have had other children born from 1875 -1893.  Elias and Harriet married about 1875. Not for sure when Rachel passed away. There was a 10 year gap between Lucy born about 1869 and Elias Jr. born about 1879.
I'm finding it interesting to go back over what I discovered.
There were some things I missed.
I believe that there are a lot of relatives on the Bartlett Connections.

Did you see any connections?

Searching For The Elias W. Bartlett Sr. Family Connections.

William Bartlett born about 1852. He was a widower.

Sarah "Sally Bartlett was born about 1867. She did marry and had children.
(I have made some discoveries on her and her off springs.)

Charles Bartlett...was born about 1866. He believed to have married and had children. Charles lived in Brookfield, Linn, Missouri.

The mother, Harriett Bartlett, (1849 - 1909) was listed as the widow on Elias Bartlett in 1905. The year she moved to St. Joseph, Missouri is unknown.

The children listed below moved to St. Joseph, MO.

Lucy Bartlett was born about 1869. She married Joshua Mossell. She was a widow.
Lucy was a school teacher. She had no off springs

Elias W. Bartlett Jr  was born about 1879. He moved to Oklahoma, City Oklahoma.
He was a waiter.

Sam Bartlett was born about 1882. He was a day laborer.
No other info on him.

Jennie Bartlett was born about 1883. She married first, John Blakey / Blakley / 2nd Chilton Lyle. Jennie had off springs by both John and Chilton.

Paul Bartlett born about 1887 or 1893. He never married.
He was a laborer; did odd jobs, porter, operator at a picture theater

Juanita Bartlett was born about 1891. She married George Armstrong.
They had off springs

Hope someone makes new discoveries on their family connections.
Seekers of family history got to keep searching.

The Elias Bartlett Connections

The Elais Bartlett Connections

Very little is known of Elias W. Bartlett Sr. He was born in KY about 1822. He was probably born into slavery and brought to Missouri. He lived in Carrolton, Carol County in Missouri.

Elias and his family were listed on the 1870 and 1880 census in Carrollton, County.
His first wife was Rachel and his second wife was Harriett.

Rachel born about 1825 in MO. Very little is know about Rachel. Her maiden name unknown. Elias and Rachel believe to have had a slave marriage some time in the early 1850's.

Their children according to the 1870 census record listed estimate year of birth.
William 1852
Warren  1854
John      1855
Fanny    1859
Lena      1862
Harriett  1865
Charles  1866 - 1944
Sally      1866

Harriet Hooper
She was born in Sept 1849 and passed away on May 20 1909 in St. Joseph, Missouri
According to a census Elias and Harriet were married around 1875. They were married for 25 years. Harriet was widow on the 1900 census.

Harriet was listed on a census as having 7 children. One child was deceased by 1900

Information shows that there was daughter Sallie who had a daughter. The grand daughter was Myrtle Peyton. Myrtle married and had two daughters. Lucy E. Bartlett Mossell was mulatto was half sister to Harriet's children. Myrtle later divorce and remarried.

Harriet's other children: estimate year of birth
Elias Jr. 1879
Sam      1882
Jennie   1883
Juanita  1891
Paul      1893

I don't know if Harriett was calming Lucy and the other child as her daughter. Lucy was Harriet's step daughter. Also I've noted that between the birth of Jennie and Juanita there was about a 9 years gap. Perhaps there were children born.

Elias Bartlett Sr. may have passed away about 1893 in Carrollton, Missouri. He was the father of about 13 or14 children.
Thanks for reading.
Hope to find more info on The Elais Bartlett Connections
