How Did My Parents Meet?

Photo of my parents in my mother's mother front room in the 1960's.
Tuesday's Treasures:

=========================================
The info below was taken from my notebook entry: October 19, 1980. I added and reworded of this entry. There were some things from my notes I didn't share. I choose to omit some.
========================================

One day, I was talking to my mother about how she met my father. "My mother told me the story of a guy that liked her. He liked her so much he asked my father to date my mother and put in some good words for him. This guy was serious.

This guy paid my father to go out with my mother. Yes! My father took the money and dated my mother...And the rest is history.

My parent went together for 2 years....My father made arrangements to get married....And they eloped in Kansas in 1937. My  father's step father, Chilton F. Lyle was a witness to the marriage. Rev Bell married my parents in his home in Kansas.
==========================================

I recall that my mother said that she met my father in her father's house. The same house that's in the picture above. My parents' parents knew each other. They didn't live to far from each other.

===========================================

I'm thankful for the parents that the Lord blessed me with.

Thanks for reading,

My father was said to have been born on this date back in 1913. He always celebrated his birthday on November 13th. Through the years and what my father told me, that his brother Isaac Blakley told him that he was not born in November. According to the 1920 census record, my father was born some time in September of 1913.

My Farthest Memories

I have been thinking...
How Far Back Can I Remember?

I can remember the time before I started going to school. My mother was on the telephone talking with someone. I heard my mother talking about enrolling me in to KG. I went in the afternoon.

I even remember walking to and from school with some of my siblings. It was along walk. We did have buses in those days. We lived about 9 blocks from Mark Twain Elementary School.

I recall playing with blocks in our play area in our classroom. I recall looking out the window onto the playground. I remember the swing set, the monkey bars and jungle gym. I recall the white and yellow circles and squares... drawings on the playground.

I recall the double doors in our classroom to come in our room. We even had a back door to go out to the playground. We had our own private bathroom in the back of our classroom. I thought that that was cool.

I recall that parents came to see their children. My parents did come. It must to have been Parents' Day. The parents came to see our classroom. And to look at what we did.

I recall laying down taking naps on a mat in our classroom. Then one day I was sick and missed school. I heard that Santa came to class that day.

So I missed Santa. I was not too disappointed. I knew who Santa was. Some of my siblings told me.

I recall reading about Sally, Dick, Jane and their dog named Spot. I recall that I was called upon to answer a question from one of our readings. I cannot recall which girl it was but Dick took and hid Jane's or Sally's ribbon. Our teacher, Miss Wise ask me What would Jane or Sally do about Dick taking the ribbon?

Here was my response to the question: I said, She would beat him up! The kids laughed at my answer. Miss Wise said that Dick would not do that. Miss Wise said that Jane or Sally would ask Dick to gave the back ribbon.

I felt "dumb" and "stupid" about my answer. I did not talk much. I was quiet. Yes, I was shy.

I recall hearing about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's Assassination. I remember that famous black and white photo. I wondered what those guys where pointing at.

I recall bringing candy to my classmates. It was my birthday four days after Dr. MLK Jr's Assassination. I even remember that I felt strange giving candy to my classmates during a time like that.

I recall seeing the men on the moon on TV. U.S. President Richard Nixon on TV during in his first term in office.

I remember relatives coming over to our Family House. People would be playing cards and talking. I recall that we had a hope chest in one of our rooms. It reminded me of a coffin.

I recall one day that the Hope chest opened up. I saw the lid was close. I ran when I saw the lid opening. I did not like being around coffins when I was a kid.

I recall watching TV shows; The Riffle Man. Other TV programs that some of my siblings would watch.

I recall one of my brothers hanging up my bicycle our swing set. He did this in our back yard and left it there. I was crying. ( I was teased a lot.)

I recall our Family Dog biting me in the stomach. Here is a section that I posted about "Dogs In The Family and Neighbor Dogs":

The First dog that I can remember in my family was "Fido". I don't know what breed of dog "Fido" was. What I remember about "Fido", he was iffy iffy.

He would be good to us. He was a happy dog. And at times turn on us. "Fido" would attack people if he though we were in danger.

Then again, there was a time when I was out in the back yard helping my Father clean up. I bent over to pick up something. All of a sudden "Fido" came running out of his house and charged at me biting my stomach. Boy I was scared. I cried...

Yes,"Fido" was something else. He liked to bit. He loved chasing cars tires. Well, one day our Father was going on his trash route. "Fido" broke loose and went chasing after the truck. This time "Fido" got ran over.

My Father buried "Fido" in our backyard. I was there looking on. Even though "Fido"was a crazy dog, I still like dogs.

I recall some of the games that we played in the house. We played marbles and jacks. We played with "army men". We made paper air planes and toss them in the air.

We played race cars with the orange tracks that made loops and turns. We built houses out of playing cards. We stood dominoes upright until we tapped one letting them fall one by one. (We played cards and dominoes too.)

I recall when our Dad and my brothers enlarged our basement. There was a lot of dirt to dig out. I remember one time there was some things outside the window. Someone one had an idea to lift me up to the window so I could get it. Yeah, I was small enough to go through our basement window.

On my journey of transformation
As I reflected back on my memories of the past, I found out as I was typing this blog, more things came to me. I added more detail. O the memories of what once was.

I had a thought. As the years go by, I lose some things of the past. So I challenged myself to this was a simple exercise. I put some thought into what I did.

So I thought of How Far Back Can I Remember? It was as though I took a journey in time's past. I had more memories than I thought.

It is good at times to recall the good things of the past. My memory goes back to 40 or 41 years ago. I think that that is good.

From my Book of Thanks and Blessings

Father God, I thank You that You blessed with a memory. I thank You for what I can remember things of the past. I thank You for the idea that came to me, to write things down for future generations.

I thank You for all the PROVISION that I have had in my life time. I thank You the FAITH that is in planted in me. I thank You for the SIGNS and WONDERS that I have witness in my days.

I thank You for the LOVE that surrounded me as I was growing up. I thank You that Your HEALING Hands guard my life. I thank You that DELIVERANCE that is in my life.

I thank You for the Door of HOPE that has been in my life. I thank You that well before I was born, You choose me to have the choice of SALVATION in Jesus' name Amen.

Remembering My Dad (Part 2)

This blog is the continuation from October 7, 2012:  Remembering....
Re post from my Xanga site Sunday 7 Oct 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My Dad's funeral day was Wednesday, October 11, 1989. Before we were going to the church, family member gathered in the yard where we live now. The street was filled with cars.

There were a lot of people in the yard. The day was pleasant. It was a warm sunshiny Fall day. The trees had many beautiful colors displayed for all to see.

An unique thing happened as we were about to pray. A huge gushing wind came. It brought some dust into the street. It was like a world wind. We had to wait for the wind to stop. I thought that the wind was very unusual.

After we prayed, we gathered up in line car behind car, hiding to the church. We made our way there. As we got out of our cars, family members gathered together and stood outside in a line waiting to go in the church.

As we entered the church, the song "O When The Saints, Go Marching In" was playing. The small church was packed. All but 4 brothers did not attend the funeral.

The casket was open the entire funeral. The homecoming celebration lasted about an hour. The time came to view the body for the last time. I waited so I could be one of the last ones there before the casket was closed.

As I waited, a cousin came behind me and placed her hand on my shoulder. When she place her hand on my shoulder, I began to weep and cry. I didn't know what hit me.

It took a while for me to compose myself. I did not know what came over me. I was just sitting there calmly, waiting for the time for me to go to view my Dad's body. Then when I felt a hand on my shoulder, I started to cry. I don't like to cry in public.

I did make it up to the casket to view my Dad's body for the last time. I had a smile in my heart as I touched my father's hands that were folded. I believe that he is in Heaven. After that I waved and turned around. I walked out the church doors.

As our cousins brought the coffin out of the church, I began to take pictures of the funeral. I took some photo of my father's body at the funeral home during the wake / visitation. One thing I recall about the wake. We were talking as though it was not a visitation. There was a sound of joy in the house.

Back to the funeral: It felt like a long ride to the cemetery. As a tradition when a loved one passes, we drive by the loved ones house. We went by our family house on the way to the cemetery. When we got to the cemetery, I continued to take some more pictures. The trees looked so beautiful. The weather was like summertime.

You may be thinking: Why did I take photos?
There were people who did not make it to the funeral. Also future generations who never got the honor to met my father might want to see the photos. Some my wonder about who was my father?

I have some photos coming up in the far near future. 2028 or so Here's one...

Why so far in posting funeral photos? There are for the future generations.

Remembering

Today is the 23th Anniversary of my father's passing. He is in the presence of the LORD.
This blog is a re post from my Xanga site  Sunday 7 Oct 2007
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was 11 days before my father's death. The day was on September 27, 1989. He was in the hospital doing some test and was needing surgery. I stayed with him during the daytime.

On that day, my Dad was laying in his bed. I heard him talking out loud with his eyes closed. After listening to him, I realized he was talking to someone. But Who? He told this person that he was dying. Then he started to talk about some cows.

My Dad was calm about what he was saying. He had no fear in the tone of his voice. At first I thought that my Dad was talking in his sleep. So I tried to wake him up.

As I was in the process of walking up by my Dad's bedside, he suddenly opened his eyes. He was looking over my shoulder and said this phrase twice. "Look at all my people". He had the most joyful expression on his face.

By this time, I was in total tears. I was sobbing. I knew what he meant. I went in to the bathroom to compose myself. I had a very hard cry.

I looked in the mirror that myself. My eyes were blood shot red. I decided to call my sister, Freda and told her what our father said. She came out. I was ready to go home. My head hard so badly. I cried off and on. The thought of my father dying.

In my early 20's, I would watch a lot of TV unexplained mystery shows. There was one show that dealt with death and the after life. What I heard my Dad was saying, match up with what I heard from the shows. Reality hit me hard like a ton of bricks.

I believe that my Dad did see in the spirit world. The "people" who he said that he saw, his people who have gone on. My Dad also ask me if I saw birds flying above his head. I did not see anything. He said that he did. Yes, I believed him.

From that moment on I begin to speak to God in times of need.

My siblings were trying to tell me that our father was not dying. They told me that he was talking out of his head. That he was going to be alright. For years, we have heard the medical reports and the doctors tell us that our father was dying.

Even our Dad said sense that he was dying too. Well, this time, I believed that was the case. I heard it from my father. I was not saved during this time in my life. But, I talk to God a lot.

I got home from the hospital on the day my Dad said that he was dying, I laid on my back on the sofa. I had a pillow over my face. My head was pounding. I ask God, if my Dad was dying, prepare us for his death.

There had been a number of times when our Dad was at the point-of-death. Here is one story that I heard. There was a time when he was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Some thing happened on the way to the hospital. The paramedic said out loud. He's not breathing. My Dad spoke up and said "Yes, I am breathing."

My Dad had been sick for about 11 years. In 1979, doctors did not know how long our Dad would live. There were times in the hospital that the doctors were amazed how he lived so long. [Our father was on oxygen. There was some time when he worked in a foundry.]

During that week in 1989, it took me a while to get the courage to go back to the hospital. I did go. My Dad would talk to me and ask me if I saw the people out the window on the roof. I would say no. But he said that they were there but were gone. I went along with him.

Then came Friday morning. It was the day that my Dad was going to be taken to another place for recovery. When I got to his room, he asked me, with a joyful voice and a smile on his face, if he was going HOME! I shook my head no and give him a note that read he was going to another place.

I recall that the transfer from the hospital to the other place for his recovery. This was the very first time that I rode in an ambulance. It seemed strange. It was a long ride there. But we made it to the other place.

My Dad didn't like this place. He had trouble breathing and was uncomfortable there. At one time two nurses came into his room. They keep coming back and forth in to the room. My Dad did something that I never seen him do.

My Dad got so angry. He yelled at the top of his lungs at the two nurses. WILL YOU GET OUT OF HERE?? Yeah, I took off too. I went over by the window and started to cry. My Dad called for me to sit down in the chair next to his bed.

He did something that he never done before. As I look back on this he was praying to God. He ask me for my hand. As I sat down , I give him my left hand.

He took both of his hands one on top and the other under my hand. He had his eyes closed so I put my hand down. I was crying. After my father had finished praying, he told me to call "Lu", my mother and tell her not worry.

I did not call my mother. I did not want to worry her more. I tried to stay calm as I was there with my father. It was about the 3 PM hour that when this happened. I was reading and was thinking of our family history.

As the time went by, one of my brothers and his children came to relieve me. I was there a long time. When I left, our father was sleeping. The children were there with a pumpkin. I looked at my father as I left the room.

We went to get some chicken at Kentucky Fried Chicken. I tried to release the stress that I was under. Through out the evening, I felt better. Our mother and other siblings went to see our father. Our mother came back about 9:30 PM.

I did not get to sleep that night till about 10:30 PM or so. My mind was on my father. Then the strangest thing happened to me that morning. Before I heard the news, I knew that I knew. I woke up out of a sound sleep.

I saw a ball of bluish white light come from my closet. And I said with a voice of concern, "O, MY GOD!!" I think that I went back to sleep. The next thing I heard was the phone ringing. I got the news from my sister, Mary. She was the one who answered the phone a little bit after 3 AM.

As my sister was telling me that our Dad did not make it, I felt something leave me. Something physically left my shoulders. I felt relieved from what I saw in my father's suffering. As we made the phone calls to tell other members of the family, they started to come over.

In my heart, I knew where my father was. I remember going outside that on October 7th morning without a worry. I looked up into the dark clear sky. Looking toward the southeast sky to the Heavens. I just kept looking at the stars. I smiled and thank God. My father is with Jesus.

On that day it was one of our nephew's birthday. He turned 2. Yeah, we had a birthday party for Marcus. [We were help raising Marcus. His mother died 35 days after his birth. I was praying back during that time in my life as well.]
Ever since my father's death, I begin a quest to find out some things. I have been searching for my family history. I began even a deeper search for some things about the Bible.

Eventually my quest for the Bible drew me closer to God. I began to read the Bible more and more I made discoveries of radio "religious" talk show and T.V. Programs. Jesus came in my life on the night of September 17, 1993. He introduce Himself to me. He became my Lord and Savior.

NOW, I have an Heavenly Father. I thought after my earthly father passed away, I thought that I could never celebrate Father's Day because I did not have a father. But in 1990, the revelation came to me. I have a Heavenly Father, hit me. Fathers Day is special for me. I miss my Dad.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Special Note to this testimony:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I wrote a poem about my father's passing. Also one day as I was reading my Bible in January of 1994, something unusual happened to me. I was reading where Isaac was calling one of his sons to his bed side.

I believe that the Spirit of the LORD was speaking to me through this passage. I was trying my best to read this passage, when all of a sudden something came to me.

I believe as I was reading, the thought of my father blessing me 12 hours before his passing. As Isaac blessed his son, my father prayed a blessing over me.

As I got that revelation, I cried like a baby. It took me a while to collect myself. I believe that God wanted me to know that. I felt good after that encounter with God.

How Did Our Father End Up Here In St. Joe? Happy Father's Day!

Part of a re post from my Xanga site on Sunday, 19 June 2007...
I added the photo in 2012 and added some updates.

Yeah, I did have a GOOD Father's Day. Especially in the House of the LORD, our Father's House. We got to sing the hymnal This Is My Father's World again..(ON FATHER'S DAY). The message was called "The Reckless Father". I received some revelation from that message: "The Reckless Father" (in 2007).

Some of my siblings, their spouses and some of their kids got together on Father's Day.... Some questions arose to how did we get to be, where we are in this city of St Joseph, Missouri.

I was ask this question...

How did our father end up here in St. Joe?
I heard many other cities as to where we (our ancestors lived and )could have lived.
in the towns of Elwood, Kansas (and areas and some went) up along with Omaha, Nebraska.

We could have lived in Yankton, SD. Our father's father, John was planning to bring his wife, Jennie and 7 children up there in the late teens of the last century. (About 1916 - 1917)

Grandpa John Blakey Blakley died before making the trip back to get them. Our Grandma Jennie (Bartlett) Blakley decided to stay in St. Joseph, Missouri. She had siblings and family here.

Actually, our father wanted to live on a farm... The closest "thing of being on a farm" was that we had a lot of chickens in our backyard in the mid to late 1950's ... This was what I was told. This happened well before my time.
David W. Blakley Sr.

Today, (FATHER'S DAY!) is an anniversary for me... June 19, (1994) was my very first Father's Day in church. I was saved. I was a happy girl on that day and ever since than knowing that I have God as my Father God.

I have been thinking... that for those who are in Christ have the honor to addressing God as Father. I know some ...who did not have that honor to call a man in your household, father. But know since we have JESUS, we have God, the Father as our Father God.

But when I received that revelation of God as my Father, it changed me. I have the honor to address God as Father God, forever. I have also been thinking...I am a child of God. God is my Father. That's awesome!

Hope that you Have A WONDERFUL Day!

Memories Of My Father, David W. Blakley Sr.

Some Thoughts / Memories On... My father, David...

This is re post from my Xanga site on Sunday, 17 June 2007
God blessed me with the honor of having a father for 25 and a half years of my life. My father was about 49 and half years older than I was.

He and my mother were already grandparents when I was born. Yeah, I was a Daddy's girl. Never had to have a whipping from my parents. Yes, I was spoiled. I was very shy and our parents' 19th child. [Indeed I am from the seed of David.]

I recall stories that some of my older siblings would share with us...That our father would take some of them to the store. There was a deal when you brought so many groceries.... you would get a wagon...Well, our father had 7 wagons for all of kids at that time.

Also, I heard that our father helped do some of the household things. He did some cooking in the early days with our mother.... He would cook some meals that were not on the market yet. Like making noddles in sauce mixing in hamburger.

And there was a snack that he would call "pudding in tane". I loved that...peanut butter mix with syrup spreading it on bread. I heard that that's on the market too.

My Dad told me that his father in law would put out the flag on my father's birthday. Yeah, my mother said that her father liked my father. Our Dad was our Grandfather's best son in law. My mother was a Daddy's girl too. [Photo of my parents in my mother's mother's house.]

I recall our father, after he had his breakfast, he would put out our lunch money on the dinning room table....the money would be in coins.. in a roll about 7 rolls or so... the earliest that I can recall, our lunch for school was about 60 cents. [That included an extra milk.]

I was told that our father helped out a lot of people in his lifetime. He was a giver of himself. Some people borrow things from him... He would help repair and built on to others houses. He even enlarge our family home over the years as our family grow.

Along with having a job, our father started a family trash business in 1939 in which he owned and operated ..... He loved to watch sports especially baseball. He loved cookies very much...We also had to have cookies in the house.

Our father was a quiet -kindhearted man and a very hard worker all his life. Our father's mother passed when our father was 13. Our father's father died when our father was about 5. Our father did not get to know his father. But our father was very fond of his Stepfather.

This year will be the 18th year since our father's passing. Our Dad departed from this life in the 52 and a half years of marriage to our mother. Our father was devoted our mother and supportive to us as a family.

I helped my mother care for our father....after he got ill...Toward the end of his life, he knew that it was time for him to go. He lived eleven more years than what the doctors thought.

Doctors were amazed how our father lived as long as he did. Our Dad was a fighter even up to the end of his life. Now our father and our mother are in presence of the LORD.

I think all fathers should be special in the eyes of the children in some way or other. I saw a lot in my father during the time I was blessed to be with him. He was the father that God choose for me. I thank God for my father. My father did the very best that he could in raising me while he was my father.

I recall my father working a lot as I was growing up, up to the time he got sick. I recall in my early days, I always wanted to help him do something in the yard. I had a closer father- daughter relationship with my father in his latter years. [Our father work a lot in my early years.]

1990 was the first Father's Day without have my father. It was not until I got the revelation in that year that I have an Heavenly Father. I was not saved but I thought that. I grew more to start back to honor Father's Day.

By 1994 I was a very happy girl. It's was like it was my first Father's Day that I had. I was saved and I got to go to my Father's House on Father's Day June 19th 1994...Juneteenth Day.

On that Father's Day I was SO HAPPY. One of my sisters told me that one of her kids ask her, why is Aunt Susie so happy on Father's Day? I have an HEAVENLY FATHER and I can honor and celebrate Father's Day.

To all you fathers out there....Thanks for being fathers! Fatherhood is a gift from God.

There are memories that children cherish of their fathers that remains in the hearts of children forever. For me I cherish the time that my father took me with him to get something when he told me to sit in the car and wait.

When he came back to start the car...we were out of gas. So we got out of the car a started walking....As we were walking my father held my hands.

[My father HELD my hands... He held my hands and prayed for me about 12 hours before his transition into the next life in the presence with Jesus.]

Another cherished memory...When I about cut off my finger...My father warned me about that sharp blade on the lawnmower but I touch it anyway. Yeah, my father rush me to the hospital and than took me to the drug store for my medicine.

He also so told me to pick out some candy while we were waiting for the medicine. [It was a big bag of candy. I think I shared it with some of my brothers and sisters.]

Those memories are still alive...we build everlasting memories in our lives from others who are apart of our lives...

For those who did not grow up with a father or did not have a good relationship with your father, I cannot imagine how you may feel. I grow up with nephews and nieces who had no father in their homes. Their mothers raised them the very best way that they could. There is a "lost"...without having a father in the home while growing up...early in life.

If you are saved, you have An Eternal Father...GOD, THE FATHER. He is our Heavenly Father forever. I see and think of having a Father in a new way. Our Heavenly Father is Someone completely different from our earthly fathers. [He is the FATHER of all fathers. He is the source of fatherhood.]

This blog was inspired as I was in the Upper Room on Thursday morning. I was seeking the LORD what to blog. I jotted down some notes and began to compose my blog on Friday and just started typing.

Then I went back in the Upper Room on Friday night before church. I reread my notes and jotted down some more notes. I prayed some more and here is my finish work. God Bless you all.

May you all Have An AWESOME Father's Day!

Happy Father's Day Heavenly Father!

It's the first day of the week. I was glad when they said...

Let us go to the House of the LORD.

David And Lula: 74 Yeas Ago March 28, 1937

 And the two became one.
Mr and Mrs. D.W. Blakley Sr.
In the home of Mrs. D. Blakley's mother.
Mrs. Leo (Mary) Lankford Sr.

On Sunday, March 28, 1937,
David (23 1/2) and Lula (16 almost 17) were married.
They eloped in Troy, Kansas.

Here's A Repost From Sunday, March 28, 2009.
I added some things.

From My Notes:
October 19, 1980
The [ braces] were added for clarification.

[My] mother, [Lula] and father, [David] married when others didn't want them to. They [ my parents] arranged to marry in Troy, KS in Reverend Bell's home.[ It was ] ( Just like a church) on [ Sunday] March 28, 1937.Others wanted [ my ] mother to marry O. Thomas, [ my] Uncle Vernon's brother.

Here is another story entry:
October 19, 1980

[There was ] a boy? who liked [my] mother, [Lula]. The boy was a friend of my father, [David]. He (the boy) paid [ my ] father to go out with [ my ] mother and put in some good words in for him. My father took the money and got a date for himself. They, [ my ] mother and father went together for about 2 years and got married in Troy, KS.

Another Entry:
March 1, 1986

[ My ] Father and mother [ were ] married in Troy Kansas, [ my] father made all the arrangements.Mr Lyle [ Old man Lyle was my father's step father ] couldn't read or write was a witness. They [ my mother and father ] were married on March 28, 1937.

My mother's parents didn't want them [ my parents ] to get married.
My mother's maiden name was spelled wrong on the wedding certificate.

Some Of My Thoughts:
On The 73rd Anniversary Day

I can assume on that day that my parents went to church on that Sunday. They eloped. Besides, my parents were married in the preacher's house. My father's step father, [Chilton Lyle] was a witness to this wedding.

As I recall my mother saying that she and my father were childhood sweet hearts. My mother's mother was friends with my father's mother before my parents were married. My parents lived in the same neighborhood at same time.

I recall my father speaking of what this guy who ask him, my father about my mother. This guy would ask my father.. are you reeling in my mother." I mean was my father speaking good words in for this boy. Those words that my father were speaking were for his own sake not that boy's.

I talked with my Aunt Josie. She remember this guy. She said this guy want to date my mother so bad that he ask my father to speak some good words in for him. Yeah, those words were for himself.
He got paid to do it to.

My parents had 19 children together.
I don't recall my parents ever having an argument.
They were married 52 1/2 years before my fathers passing. My mother passed away 4 days after what would have been their 63rd wedding anniversary. That was 10 years ago.

I thank God for blessing my with parents.
I am thankful that my parent had one more child born during their 26th anniversary year.
That child is me.

I am thankful that I had 25 1/2 years with my father.
And 36 years and 357 days with my mother.
I thank God I will reunite with them again.
