How Searching For My Relatives: Changed My Thinking

As I’m discovering information about my relatives, I noticed a pattern. Then again, I’ve learned that this method works in some cases. And in the case of Mrs Mary Dade’s obituary, it provided new clues. What a discovery that was!. It led me to something else.

Mrs. Mary Ann Dade was the wife of Louis Newton “Old Bone” “Lew” Dade, who was an enslaved person. Mary was born on Saturday, May 1, 1847 in Marion County Missouri. She was an enslaved person and the property of Mary Vaughn until the end of the Civil War. She passed on Thursday, August 19, 1915 in Canton, Missouri. (Louis and Mary were well known and respected in Canton, Missouri,)

I was online, searching through old newspaper. I came across Mary’s 1915 obituary. As I read it, I noticed some things about her survivors.. The names of her sons were Den “Dan” Dade, George Dade, Golden Dade, Mone Dade and John Wesley Dade. The obituary mentioned three daughters but, not by their names .

Mary’s daughters’ names were Miss Mary Belle Dade, Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Dade and Miss Duana Dade. What clicked in my thinking was the daughter Duana. She was STILL living!! I thought she passed. I couldn’t find any clues on her. Until, I read her mother’s obituary.

The source of the news clipping was published in The Canton News Canton, Missouri , Friday, August 20, 1915 page on 5.

For years, I was couldn’t find clues on Duana Dade. The only record of Duana was on the 1880 Missouri census. She and her twin Den were listed as 3 years old. They were born in June of 1877. Mary’s obituary brought Duana back into my searching

I started to searching for Duana. And I found new clues by accident. I was searching for each Louis and Mary Dade’s family members one by one in different news papers. I was shock to discover what happened to Duane. I wrote about that discovery, I will share more in the next blog theme: A Turning Point.

Thanks for reading.
How Searching For My Relatives: Changed My Thinking

How am I connected to Mary Ann (Venoy) Dade?

Her husband Louis Newton Dade was the brother of my Great Grandmother Charlotta Dade Lankford / Lankfard.

God bless you
