Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteCora and Elmer moved to Iowa, looking for jobs. They were originally planning to move to Illinois, but they heard there were jobs in Iowa. They took Leonard (14yo), nephew, with them and Veta, niece, joined them a year later. I think there was one more sibling with them but I am not sure who. But Leonard and Veta stayed in Iowa. Wayne Manley drowned while listed in the army. Not sure about the army part, but I am pretty sure he drowned when he was around 21 yo.
I am looking for an ad I found, a long time ago, searching "Doc" Manley, Leonard's dad. A couple of years back, I had a conversation with Aunt Veta about a someone searching for Doc Manley. Side note, my dad, Leonard, thought he was called "Doc" because he was everyone's "animal doctor". Probably true. But in the ad searching for Doc Manley, the man said, he was a bootlegger and his dad kept telling stories about him. When I asked Aunt Veta about this, she told me she didn't know he was a bootlegger, but it made sense. Her grandpa, Doc Manley's father, kept everything locked up in his house including the doors, to keep the drunk people out. Which she found odd at that time. That is were Veta stayed while she was going to secretary school. She said every so often he will pull things out for her to look at, which was her grandmother's jewelry and fur coat. She said her grandpa (my great grandfather) was blind, widowed but often was taking care of her, my dad and Wayne, with the help of their older siblings, since grandma passed away when Vita and Leonard were toddlers.
