Mrs. Hannah B. Hooper, age 115 in 1880 ~ Longevity

 Welcome...

I’m not sure when Mrs. Hannah B. Hooper was born or even when she passed. There are two records of her birth year and age and both sources don’t match of. The information can be located on the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Carroll County in Missouri.

On June 22, 1880 in South Carrollton, Carroll, Missouri, United States Of America., a census taker came to the household of Elias Bartlett Sr., and recorded who lived at the Bartlett residence. What caught my attention on this census was that there was a Hannah Hooper listed at the age of 115. She was born about 1765 in South Carolina. She couldn’t read or write. Her parents were from Virginia.

According to the 1880 census, Hannah, an invalid was the grandmother of Elias BARTLETT Sr. However, through further searching, I discovered that she was the grandmother of Harriett (BUFFINGTON / HOOPER ) BARTLETT. She was the wife of Elias BARTLETT Sr.

When Harriet’s daughter, Juanita (BARTLETT) ARMSTRONG passed in 1929, Juanita’s mother’s name was listed as Harriet HOOPER. And in 1920 when Elias W. Bartlett Jr. passed, his mother was listed as Harriett HOOPER.

On September 2, 1870 in Wakenda, Carroll, Missouri, U.S.A, a census taker recorded who lived in the household of William HELSIN who was 60 years old. His daughter was Mariah age 40. And listed after Mariah, was Hannah B. Heslin who was listed at age 80, born about 1790. I don’t believe her surname was Heslin. The relationship with the head of house with the others are unknown.

I believe that this Hannah HELSIN on the 1870 census was the same Hannah HOOPER on the 1880 census. The key people on both censuses were Harriett and her children, Sarah, Charles, and Lucy with the different surnames. Harriett and her children’s ages match up on both censuses.

I’m not sure if Hannah was born in 1765. When I saw the age of 115, I wondered. When I came across Hannah in the 1870 census, her age was 80, born in 1790. This is a big age just in ten years.

Or perhaps, could Hannah have been the great grandmother of Harriett?
The 1870 census, has some clues to ponder about.

William HELSIN appears not to be Hannah’s son. Mariah was William’s daughter who born in North Caroline, just as Hannah was.

Could Mariah be Harriett’s mother? Harriett was 22 and her children were listed after her.
Were Sophiah and Harriett twins?

Who was Hannah B. Hooper?
Hannah was my Grandmother Jennie Bartlett Lyles’ grandmother

Hannah lived a long life through the late 1700’s, the beginning of the 1800’s up to the 1880’s. She was most likely enslaved until her freedom. Hannah was living on June 22, 1880. She is mostly likely passed away in Carroll County Missouri during the 1880’s.

I will continue to honor my 3rd Great Grandmother, Hannah. There should be something out there on her. I’m thankful that she lived to be counted on the 1880 census. How amazing! What a testimony!!! Thank You, LORD!!!

Mrs. Hannah B. Hooper, age 115 in 1880 ~ Longevity

I’m thankful that I located Hannah and Harriett on the 1870. I was hoping to stumble across an old newspaper article about her in Carrollton, Missouri. I’m still hoping that I will.

Blessings,

Searched Census To Identify Harriett And Her Three Children

 Searching From What’s Known
Harriet’s future husband, Elias W. Bartlett Sr. was listed with his first wife, Rachel on the 1870 Missouri Census in Carroll County. Question: Where was Harriett and the other three Bartlett children who were born before the 1870 census was taken?

On November 7, 2022, I began to search for Harriett on the 1870 Carroll County Missouri census. I searched for every black Harriett born in Missouri around 1849 and one by one, I looked to see if there were key names in the same household. Those key names were her Grandmother Hannah and three children, Sallie, Charles, and Lucy.

The Newest Discovery

Actually, this is an old discovery that became new once I saw it again. I came across the household of HESLIN before. I didn’t see the connection then. But, the second time around, I was filled with joy when I saw the names Hannah, Harriett and Sally, Charles and Lucy. This was confirmation.

Harriett BARTLETT’s and her three children’s ages were similar to the 1880 census. However, Hannah was listed as born in North Carolina on the 1870 census at age 80. But on the 1880 census Hannah was born in South Carolina and her age was at 115. This is 35 years older in ten years.

I believe that this Harriet, her children and her Grandmother, Hannah are the ones that I’ve been searching for. They were listed with William HESLIN born in 1810 in Kentucky. He who was head of house. Hannah B. HESLIN born in 1790 North Carolina.( Note that Harriett had a grandmother by the name of Hannah HOOPER on the 1880 Missouri census in Carrollton County Missouri.)

It appears that Elias W. Bartlett Sr. was not the father of Sally, Charles and Lucy. This would make sense, if they weren’t listed with him on the 1870 Missouri census. It appears that the three children took the Bartlett surname. I wonder what were their surname?

What’s Next?
Ironically, I can’t locate the family with the Heslin surname on the 1880 census for Carroll County Missouri. I’m wondering. Is there another way to spell that surname? Could Helsin have been their enslaved surname? Also note that I have found Sally, Charles and Lucy were listed as mulatto on other records.

Sarah “Sallie’s maiden name was Shaw. This came from an Ohio 1919 marriage record of Myrtle Younger, daughter of Sarah “Sallie”. The Shaw name is something to look into.

Questions And Wonder:
Who was Harriett ( BUFFINGTON / HOOPER BARTLETT?
She was my Great Grandmother, Harriett. My father’s David’s grandmother.
I wonder if Hannah could have been Harriett’s great grandmother.

The Mariah HELSIN was born in North Carolina in 1830. She was Williams’ daughter .
Was William HELSIN Hannah’s son?
Or if Williams’ wife was Hannah’s daughter?
Wonder if Sophiah, Harriett and Allen were siblings?

I wonder if Hannah’s surname was Buffington?
Listed as Hannah B. HELSIN on the 1870 census. Harriett’s maiden name was listed as Buffington on her daughter, Lucy’s social security application in 1939.

Week 8 ~ Amy Johnson Crow #52Ancestors in 52 Weeks ~ Generations CafĂ©

The theme for Week 8 is “I Can Identify.” Genealogy research is about identifying the correct people to attach to our family trees. Who have you worked hard to identify? Another way to interpret the theme would be to highlight someone like my grandfather, who could spot (and correctly identify all kinds of mushrooms. (My sisters and I never got the knack of doing that!)

Hannah Hooper, The Oldest Ancestor On My Familty Tree: Week 3 ~ #52ancestors 52 Weeks

1880 Missouri census date in June,

I begin searching for records on my family tree about mid 1980's. I was amazed when I came across the 1880 Missouri census. My 2nd Great Grandfather, Elias BARTLETT and his Grandmother, Hannah HOOPER were listed on that census. Hannah was listed as age 115.

Hannah was born in South Carolina. She was sick, an invalid. She couldn't read or write. This is information was recorded sometime in June of 1880. And it's all I know about Hannah. I don't know when Hannah passed.

I tried to continue to search more leads on Hannah. I was always lead to believe that she was Elias grandmother. That was until early in 2008. I came across the death record of my Great Aunt, Wauneta (Bartlett) Armstrong. She was my Grandmother, Jennie's sister.

Wauneta Armstrong's parents were Elias Bartlett and Harriet (HOOPER) Bartlett. So, I see that Hooper came from Harriet's side and not Elias'. So that's what I thought. But, as I kept searching for  info on Harriet's children, she has two other surnames.  This is a mystery.

However, when I discovered Harriett's maiden name or surnames, I had all my Great Grandmother's maiden names. I was so excited.  I can only imagine to find more on my lineage.

I would never imagine that I would come across a census record listing my 3rd Great Grandmother living to at the age of 115.  So far,  she's the oldest person that I've found on my family tree. And my journey continues. I wonder what I've come across?

Thanks for reading.
God bless you.

What About Hannah Hooper?

What have I discovered about Hannah Hooper, my 3rd Great Grandmother? I first came across Hannah's name on the 1880 Missouri census in the 1980's. She was about 115 years old born in SC. She was listed as an univalent. Her parents were from VA.

Hannah was listed as the Grandmother of Elais Bartlett. I was always lead to believe that Hannah was Elais grandmother until... I did some searching.

Early in 2008, I came across a death record of a Great Aunt, Waunetta Bartlett Armstrong ( 1891 -1929). She was my Grandmother Jennie's ( 1883 -1926) sister. Waunetta's parents names were listed on the death record.

Waunette parents were Elais Bartlett ( ca 1822 - ? ) and Harriet Hooper ( 1849 -1909). So, I see that Hooper came from Harriet's side and not Elais'. That changed some things.

Now, I have found all my Great Grandparents by name. I had all my Great Grandmother's maiden names. I was so excited that I came across that information.

Discovering Things While On The Journey
