The WHITE Connections in Missouri

I'm still searching on The Julia White Connections in Chariton, Howard, and Randolph Counties areas in Missouri.  I received some info.... I have been wondering about some of the things that this cousin shared with me.

There were some things that I'm trying to follow up on.
Here are some questions that have come to me.

How was Laura (PAIGE) WHITE connected to The Whites in Chariton County? I have read some things about her.  She was a godly woman and hard worker. Many people called Laura, Aunt Laura.

I heard that Laura was the sister in law of Richard White. Laura was married to an Andrew J. WHITE. Richard did have a brother named Andrew White.

I have searched for Andrew and Laura WHITE on the census records. One the 1880 they were listed living next to Julia WHITE in Chariton. However, Andrew was listed with his father, Isaac WHITE.

Some thoughts and Questions: Was this Andrew WHITE's father, Isaac's Son or Grandson? Isaac was born about 1800 on that census. On the 1870 Isaac was born about 1810 in VA. Andrew was born about 1852 in MO.

Or was Isaac WHITE, Julia's father in law or brother in law? I do believe that Andrew and Laura were related to Julia WHITE. But how? There are similarities with the family. Andrew and some of Julia's children lived near one another. Mattie White lived near Andrew on the 1900 census.

Here's what I discovered about Andrew and Laura WHITE.

They were married about 1873. They had 6 children. Julia, Mariah, Isaac, Cornelia, William and Wedian WHITE. Cornelia and Wedian were listed as married on a census. Neither of their spouse's names weren't listed.

Cornelia had a daughter with the surname WOODS. Todd WOODS was listed with Andrew WHITE as a nephew. I believe that Todd would have been Cornelia's son. Or related to the WOODS who lived next door to Isaac and Andrew WHITE on the 1870 census. Jordan and Martha (WHITE) WOODS.

Andrew WHITE was listed as the son of Isaac  and Mardy / Mary (BURTON) WHITE.
Andrew was born on  Dec 14, 1852 in Chariton, County.
He passed away on April 16, 1927 in Chariton County.

Laura (PAIGE) WHITE was the daughter of Dennis and Ellen PAGE / PAIGE.
Laura was born on May 13, 1855 in MO.
She passed away on March 27, 1955 at the age of 100.

I'm hoping to find more leads.
I'm thankful for relatives who have been and are sharing  information.

Some Questions About The BLAKEY WHITE Connections

I've been searching on new leads on The BLAKEY WHITE Connections. I have been thinking about some questions. I hope to find some of the answers to these questions.

I had a conversation with a cousin on The Rev Richard "Dick" WHITE Sr. and Jane (FERGUSON) WHITE Connections. This cousin got me thinking about some things. I believe that there are others who have info that can add to the family tree. I hope that they are willing to share.

Here are some question and thoughts:

When did Julia WHITE pass away? Heard that she may have lived to be in her 90's. Did she pass away in St. Louis Missouri? Julia was born about 1820. If she was in her about 90 that year would have been about 1910. Checked MO death records for Julia WHITE couldn't find a match.

Update: Julia who was born about 1820 She was not the same Julia who moved to St. Louis. Most likely There was another Julia.

On the Slave Article: Slavery Descendants to have First Reunion, it stated that the great grandmother was buried in Forest Green MO. Was that lady, Julia WHITE? Did Julia have a daughter living St. Louis?
What about Mattie WHITE, daughter of Julia WHITE? Heard that Mattie's first name could have been Martha. Matt or Mattie was her nickname. Did Mattie married? Did she have 5 children? Did Jane White one of Mattie's daughters move to Kansas City MO?

Update on Mattie's children:
She did have more than one child besides Ella Bentley Carr.
Where did Mattie's daughter Ella BENTLEY CARR pass away about 1923? Ella's son was listed with Mattie on the 1930 and 1940 census. Ella's husband Pleas CARR passed away in Kansas City MO in about 1961. Pleas married twice.

Update: On Mattie's grandson, Willard: It appears that Mattie raised her grandson after his mother Ella passed away.

What year did Hester WHITE pass away? Heard that Hester was buried on the family farm. Hester was the youngest child of Tony WHITE.

Update on Hester WHITE:
He passed away in the 1950's.  He may have passed away out of State of Missouri. But was buried in MO.

When did Georgia (LEE) WHITE pass away? Georgia was the 1st wife of Tony White son of Richard ""Dick" White.

What was Clora WHITE's maiden name? She was the 2nd wife of Tony WHITE son of Richard "Dick" WHITE.
Who were Rebecca WHITE's parents from Virginia?Rebecca was listed as Julia WHITE's granddaughter on the 1880 census in MO. Which child of Julia was the parent of Rebecca?

Update on information below:
Still Searching. Believe that they were related. But how?

Possible other WHITE Connections:
Was Rebecca WHITE RUSSELL related to Julia WHITE?Rebecca WHITE father was William WHITE.

There are other questions. Was the Isaac WHITE that lived next door to Julia WHITE related? Isaac had a son named Andrew J. WHITE. Andrew was married to Laura PAIGE WHITE. in Chariton/ Howard County MO.

Article Reflections: Slavery Descendants To Have First Reunion: Part 12

Article written about 1971 or so.
Some final thoughts on this article.

As I was going thought each sentence of this article, I wasn't aware of some things.
As I was going blog to blog, I noticed that I added more and more as I went along.

I was trying to see what the writer was trying to share. There were some generation gaps in the beginning of this article. There could have been a generation that came from Africa who were shipped to New Orleans in 1843.

I have no leads on that. I have found out the  family came from through corresponds with a cousin. One of the Yankton, South Dakota descendant said the family came from off the coast of Nigeria.

As for the mother and 5 children, they could have been a family in 1843. But not the one that matches up with the Isaac that ran off to join the Civil War.

I wasn't for sure about some things until I came across the slave ad that lead to more discoveries. And what a discovery that was. I was seeing the names of my 2nd Great Grand parents' names with some of their children. How aweful to be a slave and be sold.

1858 Ad

Andrew White was believed to have been the father of Julia's children.
Andrew or Julia may have had a mulatto child.

Here is a list the children that I have come up with.
Unknown child who had a child named Rebbecca
Mary WHITE,
Linda WHITE,
Lydia WHITE
Isaac BLAKEY who married Martha SCOTTt and Rachel LEPHRIDGE
Andrew WHITE
Ben (Benjamin) WHITE
Spencer WHITE who married Melinda BANKS and Lou
Josh (Joshua) WHTIE who had 3 daughters and a son named John BLAKE
David WHITE
Martha WHITE who was a widow
Mattie WHITE who was a widow with 5 children
Richard "Dick" WHITE who married Jane FERGUSON and Mary Belle BROOKS

Isaac was the only one who carried the BLAKEY surname.  There are many unanswered questions that we will never find. But the descendants of this union have some history to past down to the next generations.

I hope others will pass down what they know and or heard of on their family history. Each family has a history to share. May we learn to record what we know.

Thanks for reading,
Susan

The Arrival And Names Taken ~ Article Part 3

The next three sentences
When they arrived in New Orleans, the slaves were sold at slave auctions and given a bill of sale.
The slaves were given the slave master's name.

The two oldest brothers, Isaac 12 and John 10 sold to a man by the name of BLAKEY.
He took them to Forest Green, Missouri.

Here were some more clues. There should have been a record of the bill of sale for these slaves. I don't know if the records still exist. So we can figure out about what year Isaac and John were born. I assume that the year was 1843 when the slaves were sold. Here's the math.

1843 - 12 = 1831 the year about when Isaac was born
1843 - 10 = 1833 the year about when John as born

Assuming that the year was 1843, the years don't match up with the John or Isaac BLAKEY. There may have been another generation with a mother and her 5 children. According to this article Isaac was the oldest. As I searched on I found out that Isaac had older siblings. Isaac was born about 1845 - 1847. John was born about 1858.

There was a slave owner named BLAKEY. I search for the slave owners. They moved to Missouri about 1835 from Virginia. The slave owners did live in Forest Green, Missouri. Chariton and Howard County Missouri Area.

As I searched more, I came across more leads. Those leads led to more questions. I was surprised by what I stumbled across. Oh, I wouldn't have though of this. The question to the mystery began to unfold.

Blog Continues.

Part 1: Thoughts: Slavery Descendants to Have First Reunion

I can't recall when I first came across this news clipping. I think it was in the late 1970's.  Through the years, I began to search. I searched and I searched. I was trying to find information on the people in the article.

Through the years, I keep reading the article over and over. I gathered up information. I found some clues as I reread the article. But as I gathered more info, some things were mixed up and brought confusion.

Indeed there were so many same name relatives. I wondered, who was who? And questions that made me wonder. Why Blakey? Why White?

I made some interesting discoveries along the journey. Some discoveries, I thought; could never have been found out. I believe what I came across were blessings from God. I was so excited to find out more and more. So, I kept searching.

I couldn't have discovered what I know so far without assistance from others. I'm thankful for the people who God put in my pathway to help me. Thank You, Jesus!

I was hoping to find more people along this journey. And I did come across some contacts with family members through family reunions and some who kept in touch through corresponding through the mail.

What a journey it has been!
Thanks for reading.

Project: The Julia White Connections

I've have a list of Julia's children in whom I've little information on. It was more of a task to find Julia's children. Indeed it has been a project. Here are the list of children that I've found very little information on. The sources came from census records, and a slave ad and a marriage record.

Names                                            Source of Julia's Children
Unknown White  born VA            (1880 Census Granddaughter)
Linda White        born MO 1841  (Slave Ad 1858)
Mary White        born MO 1844   (Slave Ad 1858)
Ben White           born MO 1849   (Slave AD 1858)
Andrew White     born MO 1849   (A Researcher)
Lydia White        born MO 1852   (A Researcher)
David White        born MO 1858   (1880 Census)
Joshua White      born MO 1860   (1880 Census)
Martha White     born MO 1862   (1880 Census)

I have searched for each of this children in the Howard County and Chariton County area. I can't locate or find connections to Linda, Ben, Andrew, Lydia, David, and Martha. Only that Martha who was a widow.

Joshua White was said to have had 3 children. Three daughters and one son. The son's was named John Blake. John was raised by a family with the surname of Blake.

I did locate a Mary White. I'm not for sure if she is the one I'm looking for. I see that a Abram Harriss married a Mary White in Chariton County, MO.

I believe that Julia's children did keep in contact with family members. Julia's children lived in the Chariton and Howard County Area in Missouri.

I'm working on future blogs on the following...
I've posted Mattie White

(Click on Names Below)             Source Of Julia's Children

Isaac Blakey born ca 1845     (Slave Ad, 1880 Census, Pension Records,
                                                News Article)

Spencer White born ca 1852   (Slave Ad, 1880/ 1900 Census,
Update on Spencer                      New Article)

John White born ca 1858        (Slave Ad, 1880/ 1900 Census, Death Record,
                                                   News Article)

Mattie White born ca 1856    (News Article, Census Records)

Richard White born ca 1866  (News Article)

I'm still searching. I hope that someone on the White Lineage will search as well. Hopefully some day there will be some connections. I hope so.

Thanks for reading.

The Julia White Connection

I was looking back over the 1880 census record on Julia White, my father's father's father's mother. I came across something that I over looked. Julia had a grand daughter named Rebecca  White born in MO. Rebecca's parents were from VA.

So that meant...at least one of Julia's children was born in VA. Rebecca was listed as mulatto. I don't know which of Julia's child was the parent of Rebecca.

But as I looked at a slave schedule in 1850, I see a male mulatto who was 20. Perhaps that was Andrew's who was 40 or Julia's who was about 32.... a son...Would Julia have another son? The ages could have been different. The mulatto son could have been younger.

I am not for sure how many children Julia had. I have compiled names from the census records, news clip and other material I have found over the years.

Here is the list of Julia's children:

Linda White
born 1841

Mary White
born 1844

Isaac BLAKEY
1845-1917

Ben Whiteborn 1849

Andrew Whiteborn 1849

Lydiaborn 1852

Spencer Whiteborn 1852 or 1860

Mattie/ Matty White

John White
born 1854 / 56
died-1918

David White
born 1858

Josh (Joshua) Whiteborn 1860

Martha White
born 1862

Richard / Dick White1866-1946.

Isaac Blakey
He did marry. First to Martha Scott who had twin sons.
He later married Rachel Ann Leftridge / Lephridge who had 18 children.

John White
He married Katherine / Katie Estell who had 9 children.

Spencer White
He did marry First to Melinda Banks who had 3 daughterss
Than re married to Lou ?

Mattie White
She was said to have not married.
I don't know if Mattie and Martha were the same person.
I've come across both Mattie and Martha who were widowed on the census records.
I've found only on Martha on the 1880 Census.
Mattie was listed as having about 5 children on one of the census.

Richard White

He did marry. First to Jane Fergerson who had 13 or 14 children.
Richard married Mary Belle Brooks who was the widow of David Stapleton.

Discoveries While On The Journey
The Julia White Connection

The Mother and Sibling reunited in MO.
They moved to the Howard and Charition County Missouri area
Most were buried in Forest Green, MO.
They could have been buried in Hoffman Cemetery.

Family History: The Surnames

This was written on 15 Nov 2007

"This is the day which the Lord had made; we will be full of joy and delight in it." The Bible In Basic English
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You know that I am on this journey of my family history. I want to share a little bit more on my Great Grandpa Isaac BLAKEY. a.k.a. as Private Isaac BLAKER.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As I have been sharing some of my family history with you, I have told you that there were name changes through the generations. As I dug deeper into this "quest", I had come across many different spelling of our surname.

In May of 1989 I wrote a letter to a MO library. In June of that year I received a copy of a newspaper clipping that was date on February 25, 1858. I did not know that this existed... A worker at the library found it for me. He was so happy to share it with me.

We all know through American History that slaves were "property". The were bought and sold as merchandise... Well this article was the notice of "Public Sale of Negroes"... the sell of 9 slaves by W.C Harvey. I know that this sounds horrible. It's apart of history.

As I dug a little deeper into my family history, I came across that W.C. Harvey was Francis Blakey's son in law. Frances owned my ancestors. With the HELP from another person on this journey, I found even more information that I did not know.

As I have been re reading some of my old letters from my cousins and others who have came across my path, I am discovering more and more. My mind is wondering...why did not I see that before.

Here is an example... I told you that I thought that our Great Grandpa was John BLAKEY. We found out that his first name was Isaac. Two days ago a revelation hit me. My Great Grandpa had a "full" brother named John. [I believe that they had the same mother and father.]

I knew that my Great Grandpa had a brother named John but I didn't realized something. I thought that John's last name was BLAKEY. His last name was WHITE. That's the other name that is in our family. Our Great Grandpa Isaac was the only known person in his family with the Blakey surname. [His family= parents and siblings]

Here is a bit of our oral history from our family reunion booklets. " The White-Blakey-Blakley Family traces their generations back to the year 1843. After arriving in New Orleans, from Africa on a slave ship, a mother and her three sons and a daughter were sold at a slave auction and given a bill of sale.

Nothing was ever mentioned of the father, but this happened in many slavery cases. The two oldest Isaac 12 and John 10 were sold to a man by the name Blakey and he took them to Forest Green, Mo.

John remained there but Isaac at the age of 16 ran away and joined the Union Army. He fought for three years and nine months until the Civil War ended and the emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln and Slavery was abolished.

Isaac then returned to New Orleans to find the rest of his family who had not been sold with him. He was told that his mother and brothers, Spencer and Dick and his sister, Matt had been sold to a slave holder named White and shipped to Natchez, MS.

He went there and located them easily. He convinced them that Forest Green, MO was a better place to live, so they moved there were where John [Blakey] was still living there...."

I came across more discoveries on this leading. That article that I mention...."Slavery Descendants To Have First Reunion" took place in the early 1970's in Sioux City Iowa. That article confused me some.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cousin Leslie and his mother Willie. Cousin Willie was the oldest and last member of the descendant of Richard White who was my Great Grandpa Isaac's brother. [Willie was one of my 2nd Great Uncle Richard's daughters.]

Both Willie and Leslie are in heaven. I have been re reading some of their letters. They wrote so much about our family history in the letters that they sent me. They were so eagerly wanting to reunite the "family" together with reunions. They had a hunger to learn more about our family history.

The wanted to have a REUNION to JOIN together the Blakeys, the Whites and the Blakleys as one. [Our common ancestors= the father and the mother to the very first generation ---The father and mother from Africa.]

Mrs. Willie was one of the person who had the first reunions in Sioux City Iowa. As I have been re reading her letters. I have been reminded of the "joy" that I had in finding out what I did not know. I believe that God led me to keep searching for more... Others who HELPED me on this journey encouraged me to not give up.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What am I thankful for ? I am thankful for the covenant blessings of HELP, STRENGTH, and JOY that God has upon my life. I am thankful that God leads my path when I don't know which way to go.

I am thankful that God brings helpers into our daily lives so that they can "lighten" our loads from our troubles. I am thankful that others are encouraging one another. It's an honor to be honored when honor is due. I thank God for honor.

I am thankful for that God leads me to strength to strength as the joy of the Lord is my strength of all my days. I am thankful for the Help that is there from God in times when I am high, higher than a kite or when I am feeling down, way down "lower than dirt". God is so faithful. He knows what I need more than I do. He brings me through whatever.
