The Elias W. Bartlett Family Connections: Lucy E. Bartlett

I can't recall how long I've been searching for Lucy E. (Bartlett) Mossell. I couldn't get nowhere for years. I had very little clues on her.

What I knew about her through records; she was the daughter of Elias W. Bartltett Sr. I wasn't for sure who her mother was. I presumed that her first name was Rachel, Elias's first wife.

I came across records of Lucy marrying a Joshua A. Mossell in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1900. Lucy was a school teacher. They had no children.

It wasn't until I posted a blog on Lucy's sister Sarah "Sallie" Bartlett Peyton, my search on Lucy unfolded. I found more on her. I was totally surprised on my discoveries.

It was on Friday the 13th of June when I made some fascinating discoveries. I was searching city directories online for Lucy Mossell. As I keep scrolling down the list, I came across a Laura A. Mossell. I checked her out.

At first, I couldn't see the connections on her. I saw another Mrs. Laura A. Mossell. I checked her address. Bingo! She was Lucy. I later found her, late husband's death date in the city directory. He passed on in March of 1909.

I couldn't find Lucy's death record in MO. But, I believed that she passed away in MO. My father said she went to Brookfield MO. However, I did find a Charles Bartlett who passed away in 1944. He was born in Carrollton, MO. I believed that he was Lucy's brother.

I believed that Lucy had remarried after her husband passed away. I wondered where Lucy passed away. I had one clue for the 1911 city directory. It stated that Mrs. Laura A. Mossell moved to Chillicothe, MO. And so my search was on.

I searched on ancestry.com for any Lucy E. in Livingston County MO. I came up with a Lucy E. Gross. I didn't make the connection at first. But, I believed that she was the one.

I keep searching the marriage records. I came up with a Lee E. Mossell who married a Geo A. Gross in St. Joseph, MO.  Geo was from Chillicothe. I put two and two together and noticed that the same Rev. that married Lucy and Joshua Mossell was the same Rev Chron.

Once I saw that connection, I started to check the Missouri Death records for Lucy Gross. I didn't find her. But, I found G. Albert Gross' death record. I keep searching for all the Lucy's in Livingston County Missouri. I saw one the caught my eyes.

As I was looking I was in awe. What I read was a Lucy E. Horan...a retired school teacher. Born in Carrollton, MO. Father's name ? Mr. Bartlett. Yes, I found Lucy! I was so happy.

The next day , June 13, 2014, I was up late searching for what records were online for Livingston County MO. I see that there was a newspaper. I searched it. I typed in Lucy. I was trying to connect the Lucy Gross with Lucy Horan. I believed that they were the same person.

Lo and behold I typed in Lucy Horan. And I located her obituary in the paper. It was Great Aunt Lucy. This confirmed what I thought about Charles Bartlett being her brother.  Also found Lucy's husband's obituary with other confirmation.

Lucy E. (Bartlett) Mossell Gross Horan's Obituary in Chillicothe Missouri newspaper.

Jackson William Horan's Obituary in  Chillicothe, Missouri newspaper.
I was happy to have found what I discovered. I was tired that night when I was searching online for Lucy. I'm glad that I keep looking.

I hope that others will search for their Bartlett Family Connections.  I believe that there are more info out there.  I'm so thankful for leads.

Thanks for reading.

The Elias W. Bartlett Sr Family Connections: Charles Bartlett

Some time ago, I was searching the Missouri Death Records. I came across a Charles Bartlett. His race was black. He was born on August 28 1866 in Carrollton, Missouri. He passed on May 19, 1944 in Brookfield, Missouri. His parents were unknown.

As I read Charles' death record, I thought that he could have been one of the Bartlett connections. I believed that this Charles was the son of Elias W. Bartlett Sr. I didn't have any proof of that.

Through the years, I've been searching for info on the Bartlett connections in  Missouri. I remember my father telling me that  one of his Aunts moved to Brookfield. I assume that was his Lucy Mossell.

I started to search for Charles Bartlett in MO.There were two Charles Bartletts. I narrowed him down.  The one I found was married an Isabelle / Isabella Queensberry on November 29, 1894 in Brookfield, MO.  (I couldn't located them on the 1900 census.)

I later found Charles and his wife on the 1910 census. Charles and his two sons were listed as mulatto. The sons' names were Chancey Harold Bartlett who was born about 1900. And Roy C. Bartlett who was born about 1906 in MO.

Also I found Charles and his wife Isabella on the 1920 , 1930 and 1940 censuses in Brookfield, Missouri. They were listed on some of the city directories in Brookfield. According to Charles's death record he worked with Southwestern Bell.

It wasn't until June of 2014 when I made a breakthrough on the Bartletts. I come across the connection on who Charles' Bartlett was. I was reading a 1940 obituary that mentioned him as a brother who was living in Brookfield, Missouri. I was overwhelmed by that.

You know, I got more out of that obituary than what I was searching for. I was amazed to see my Great Aunt Lucy Horan's obituary. Yes, I got the confirmation on who Charles was.

I'm thankful for old newspapers. I think that there's more info out there in the newspapers. It's more than what I can image. I hope that I will find more clues on my family history. And even more descendants of Elias W. Bartlett Sr.

The Elias W. Bartlett Sr Family Connections: Mother Of His Children

I've been thinking about my Great Grandfather, Elias W. Bartlett Sr. Most likely, he was born into slavery about 1822 in Kentucky. He fathered about 13 or 14+ children. He was recorded on the 1870  and 1880 censuses in Carroll County, Missouri with his family.

I was wondering Who were the mothers of Elias's children? This got me to thinking. Elias had children by Rachel Bartlett during the time of slavery.

Rachel was listed only on the 1870 census. The year of her death wasn't recorded.  She had at least 5 children. They were born from about 1854 to 1865 in MO. Their names were  believe to have been Warren, John, Fanny, Lena and Harriett Bartlett. These children were only listed on the 1870 census. Rachel could have had more children in the 1860's.

According to the 1880 census, Elias was listed with wife, Harriett and children Sallie, Charles, Lucy, Elias Jr. and William Bartlett who was born about 1852. (There was a Hannah Hooper listed as Elias' grandmother.)

I noted that Elias Jr was born about 1879. There was a 10 year gap between Lucy and Elias.  Also it appears that Sallie, Charles, and Lucy were not Harriett's children. They could have been Rachel's.

I've been searching for Sallie, Charles and Lucy on other censuses and city directories. I've noticed that they were listed as mulatto at least one record. There were times that they were listed as colored.

As I was searching for Myrtle Peyton, Harriett Bartlett's granddaughter, I came across Myrtle's mother's, Sallie / Sarah Petyon's maiden name. It was Shaw. I believe that Charles who was born about 1866, Sallie who was born about 1867, and Lucy who was born in 1869 may have had the same mother. Note that Myrtle was listed as mulatto on the 1900 census.

I believe that Charles Bartlett and Lucy (Bartlett) Horan didn't know who their mother was. Perhaps their mother passed away when they were young children. On  Charles's death record,
his parent's names were unknown. On Lucy's death record, Mr. Bartlett was listed as her father.

As for Harriett  Bartlett's children, they were listed as black on census records and city directories. Her children full names were Elias W. Bartlett Jr., Sam Bartlett, Jennie (Bartlett) Blakley Lyle, Paul Bartlett and Juanita (Bartlett) Armstrong. According to the 1900 census, Harriett listed Lucy was her daughter.

It's interesting to discover things through what was recorded on our ancestors. I didn't think much about Elias' children until I kept coming across the word mulatto. In my research, I only came across three of his children who were listed as mulatto.

Who were the mothers of Elias W. Bartlett Sr.?

In all, there was little info on Rachel Bartlett. Most likely, she was born into slavery about 1825 in Kentucky. And perhaps passed on in  Carrollton, Missouri. Her maiden name could have been Shaw. She could have had other children who died at a young age. There were a 10 year gap in Elais W. Bartlett Sr's children's birth.

As for Harriett Bartlett, she was born into slavery about 1848 in Missouri. Through researching her children I can conclude that Harriett's maiden name was Hooper. According to cemetery records Harriett passed on May 28, 1909 in St. Joseph, Missouri. In one of the city directory, Harriett was listed as the widow of Elias Bartlett.

Oh what great wonders wet can get out of life when searching for our family history. I hope that I can come across more info on the Elias W. Bartlett Sr. Family Connections.  I hope that others will search as well.

My we continue on the journey.

Thanks for reading.

Searching For Family Connections: The Sarah "Sallie" Bartlett - Peyton Family

I've been searching for info on a Sallie BARTLETT for years. All I knew about her was that she was the daughter of Elias BARTLETT. She was born about 1866 in Missouri. Her mother's first name may have been Rachel.

Over the years, I have had trouble finding leads on Sallie. I tried piecing what I knew together. But,  I thought I wouldn't find any more on her. So, I begin to search from what I knew on the Bartlett's.

At some point in my search, I came across a (mulatto)  child named Myrtle PEYTON. She was the granddaughter of Harriet (HOOPER) BARTLETT. Myrtle was born about 1886 in Kansas. I figured that one of Harriet's daughter married a PEYTON. And I worked from there.

I first came across Myrtle on the 1900 census with the Bartlett family. Later, I discovered that Myrtle at age 17, married a William YOUNGER in Buchanan County in Missouri. Also there was a Lucile Mossell who was a witness to their marriage.  Lucile "Lucy" was Myrtle's aunt through the Bartlett connections.

I kept trying to locate a Myrtle Peyton. Which daughter of Harriet's could have been Myrtle's mother? I narrowed it down to two. Lucy or Sallie. I search for both. I kept coming up hitting brick walls. I still couldn't connect.  I took a break from searching for Myrtle.

Somehow, I kept looking for other Bartletts and Peytons. I came across a Wade Hampton PEYTON with his parents. His mother's name was Sallie. Wade was named after his father. I kept searching for Sallie and Wade.

As I kept searching, I came across Wade Jr's WWII draft card. I didn't know what I would find out.  But low and behold.... The next of kin on  his record was Myrtle Younger. Yes, that was his sister. Then this lead my search for Sallie.... I discovered that her name was Sarah.

I later made discoveries on the PEYTON Family Connections.  Oh what great joy that was!  I continue to search for the PEYTON Family. It was interesting to have found out that Myrtle's brother , Wade Hampton Peyton Jr. was a doctor.

As for Myrtle, she and William had two daughters. Myrtle later divorced William. She later married  Earl C. MILLER. On Myrtle's marriage licence to Earl, it stated that Myrtle's  mother, Sarah's maiden name was Shaw.  Now, that got me to thinking. Who was Sarah's mother?

The Search Continues... See Any Connections?

I'm hoping to find more on the BARTLETT- PEYTON Family Connections. I believe that there are descendants out there. Myrtle's daughter's married names were Taylor and Duke. I hope that someone will have more info. Perhaps that someone is you.

May the Lord grant the hunger in people to search for their ancestors. May there be leads to follow. May the beauty of the Lord brings surprises along the journey. Amen!

Thanks for reading
Family Connections: The Sarah "Sallie" Bartlett - Peyton Family: One final note:Oral history: I recall my parents say that one of Jennie (Bartlett) Blakley Lyle's sister married a doctor.
I haven't found info on that sister.
Who was Jennie? She was the sister of Sallie and Lucy.

Searching For The Elias W. Bartlett Sr. Family Connections

It's Pentecost Sunday!
Happy Birthday Church!

My Family Connections Journey:
I'm still on the journey searching for Family Connections.
I've been working on The Elias W. Bartlett Sr. Family Connections.

Little is known about Elias W. Bartlett Sr. He was most likely to have been born into slavery about 1822 in Kentucky. He lived to see freedom. He was a farmer by trade. He was listed on the 1870 and 1880 censuses in Carroll County in Missouri. He was married at least twice.

Elias Bartlett's first marriage was most likely during slavery. He was married to Rachel Bartlett, perhaps in the early 1850's or earlier. According to the 1870, Elias was listed with Rachel and children: Warren, John, Fanny, Lena, and Harriet. We can assume that they were a family. Children born from 1852 to 1865. No other record of these children were found on the 1880 census.

I believe that there could have been more children born between 1852 - 1865. Not for sure if Rachel was the mother of all the children. Elias was believed to have been the father of about 14.

According to the 1880 Elias was married to Harriett. Elias' children were listed as Sally, Charles and Lucy   Elias W. Jr,  and William. ~ Only Elias Jr. was Harriett's child. The others appeared to have had a different mother. (Not for sure if William was Warren from the 1870.) Children born from 1854 to 1879. Sally Charles and Lucy may have had a different mother. They were listed as mulatto in other records on them.

Elias Bartlett Sr. may have passed away sometime in the mid 1890's. He was not listed on the 1900 census. His widow, Harriet was listed on the 1900 census in St. Joseph, MO with children  Lucy, Elias Jr.,  Sam, Jennie , Paul and Juanita . Harriett was listed as having 7 children, only 6 were living.

Other findings: Thoughts

On the 1900 census, Harriett was listed with a granddaughter, Myrtle Peyton.
Myrtle could have been the daughter of her daughter that passed.

I believe that Elias W. Bartlett Sr. could have had other children born from 1875 -1893.  Elias and Harriet married about 1875. Not for sure when Rachel passed away. There was a 10 year gap between Lucy born about 1869 and Elias Jr. born about 1879.
I'm finding it interesting to go back over what I discovered.
There were some things I missed.
I believe that there are a lot of relatives on the Bartlett Connections.

Did you see any connections?

Searching For The Elias W. Bartlett Sr. Family Connections.

William Bartlett born about 1852. He was a widower.

Sarah "Sally Bartlett was born about 1867. She did marry and had children.
(I have made some discoveries on her and her off springs.)

Charles Bartlett...was born about 1866. He believed to have married and had children. Charles lived in Brookfield, Linn, Missouri.

The mother, Harriett Bartlett, (1849 - 1909) was listed as the widow on Elias Bartlett in 1905. The year she moved to St. Joseph, Missouri is unknown.

The children listed below moved to St. Joseph, MO.

Lucy Bartlett was born about 1869. She married Joshua Mossell. She was a widow.
Lucy was a school teacher. She had no off springs

Elias W. Bartlett Jr  was born about 1879. He moved to Oklahoma, City Oklahoma.
He was a waiter.

Sam Bartlett was born about 1882. He was a day laborer.
No other info on him.

Jennie Bartlett was born about 1883. She married first, John Blakey / Blakley / 2nd Chilton Lyle. Jennie had off springs by both John and Chilton.

Paul Bartlett born about 1887 or 1893. He never married.
He was a laborer; did odd jobs, porter, operator at a picture theater

Juanita Bartlett was born about 1891. She married George Armstrong.
They had off springs

Hope someone makes new discoveries on their family connections.
Seekers of family history got to keep searching.

Mystery Of Chilton and Jennie Lyle

This blog is for the descendants of Chilton Lyle and Jennie Bartlett Lyle. Hope you find this blog interesting. Connections with the missing pieces to the puzzle. I was going to post this at another date. I think now is the now....

I've had been searching for Chilton Lyle for some time. On, 15 November 2010, I finally come across some things. I thought that Step Grandpa Lyles name was Chelton or Clinton Lyles. I came across this information for his wife, Jennie's death record. Jennie ( Bartlett) Blakley Lyles was my grandma.

I did some Missouri death record searches. I came up with the surname spelled LYLE and LYLES. Chilton and Jennie had at least 4 children. Two of their children passed away as infants. Doris or Dorthy Lyle passed in 1920 and Edgar Lyles in 1926 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

I believe that I've located Chilton Lyle on the 1920 census. He was in the___ Hospital No 2 in St. Joseph, MO. I haven't come across Jennie's and Chilton's marriage record. I can assume that they were married some time between Jan to April of 1920.

According to the 1920 census record, Chilton Lyles was born about 1874. He was a farm hand. His place of birth was in the United States. According to one of his children's death record he stated his birth place as Missouri. Jennie didn't know. She stated that Chliton's place of birth was unknown.

Jennie had at least 4 children by Chilton. There was a question of Doris and Dorthy. There were two death records with two names but every thing else was the same. I don't believe that they were twins. Records state single birth.

I lost track of Chilton after Jennie's pass away in December of 1926. On Jennie's death record her husband's name was spelled Chelton Lyles. I tried to track his two children

Faris Chilton Lyle

Geneva Lyle Jones
On the 1930 census Chilton's two children were listed with someone else. It appeared to be a place for children without parents. In 1935 Faris was listed in New York.

I recall looking at St. Joseph, Missouri city directories, I saw that Jennie Lyle lived in a different house then Chilton Lyle. I heard that some of Jennie's children didn't like Old man Lyle. My father did. I heard that Step Grandpa Chilton was a witness to my parents marriage in Troy, Kansas.

From what I recall from my father, David Blakley, Old man Lyle lived in Kansas. He was living with a woman in the 1940's. When Chilton passed away, my father said the he was willed one of Chilton's guns. I haven't found Chilton Lyle / Lyles death record.

I believe that there is more on Chilton Lyle.
Hoping more information will come up.
My search continues..

The Jennie Bartlett Connections: The Blakleys and The Lyles

I was thinking about my Grandma Jennie Bartlett Blakley Lyles's children. Grandma Jennie's life wasn't long. She passed away on December 26, 1926 at the age of 41. She was said to have had about 17 or 19 children. I was trying to piece together Jennie life through what I know about her.

My mother's mother Mary Allen Lankford told my mother, Lula that Grandma Jennie had 19 children. I have search records and found 17 of them. I've tried to piece together Jennie's life as when her children were born.

Jennie was born in May of 1883 in Carrollton, Missouri. She was the daughter of Elias and Harriett Hooper Bartlett. At some point in Jennie's life she, her mother and some of her siblings left Carrollton, MO. They ended up in St. Joseph, MO. I can't pin point the year when they again their move. Lucy Mossell, Jennie's half sister was in St. Joseph in 1900.

In the beginning stages of my search, I thought that Jennie may have eloped with John Blakey in MO.  John's family was from Chartion County MO area. I don't know where John and Jennie met. I can assume that knew each other for a year are so... 1901 or 1900

I came cross Jennie's marriage record. She married her first husband, John Blakey in April of 1902 in Excels Spring, MO. Before the year was up Jennie's first child was stillborn in Nov 1902.

I can assume since Jennie had a half sister living in St. Joseph, that was why the family came. Perhaps that was why Jennie and John settled there too. I see that Jennie's mother, Harriette and siblings, Lucy, Paul, Waneta came to St. Joseph, as well. I came across two Sam Barletts. Don't know if they were related.

Here is what I can assume of Jennie through her children's births:

My mother told me that Jennie worked very hard.
She was a small woman. She died of a heart attack on Dec 26, 1926.
She left behind a husband, 9 children.
And some siblings.

As for Jennie's children, some of the older Blakley siblings took care of some of the younger Blakleys. As for the Lyle two children, they went to an orphanage home for children on Lafayette Street in St. Joseph, MO.

Hope to come across more some day.

Awareness Of Some Things

In October of 2009, I was searching for my family history. I was aware of something for the first time. It was like something new to me. But it's been there all along.

I was doing some research on my father's mother's side. A thought come to me. Here's what I came up with.

My Grandma Jennie BARTLETT ( 1883 -1926) had about 6 half siblings born into slavery. Her father, Elais W. BARTLETT Sr. He was born about 1822. He remarried to his second wife, Harriet HOOPER ( 1849 -1909).

They were married for about 25 year and had about 6 children. Elais had other children with his first wife Rachel. All but one was born into slavery.

I was thinking about my great aunts and great uncles. In 1981, I met my Great Aunt Mary. She was my Grandpa John's sister in law. Great Aunt Mary was born in 1894. She was about 89 when we met.

When we think of Grandparents and Great Aunts and Great Uncles, we can get the thought of them being up in age. I mean the type of mind set of an elderly person. How old is old to be an aunt, an uncle, a parent or a grandparent ?

I know of some people who become grandparents in their 40's and some in their 30's. As for being a great aunt, I've been one since I was about 23.

It's in how we look that things. I didn't know how I didn't see that some of my Grandma Jennie's sibling were slaves. Oh, well. I'm glad that it came to my awareness. What more will I come across?

My Father's Mother

Jennie (Bartlett) Lyles (1883 -1926.)
She lived to about 41 or 42 years.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been doing some thinking about the life of my Grandma Jennie. After compiling information, I have come across some things that I have not seen before.

I can make the assumption of what may have happened in her life.

I have been searching birth and death records. I have come across some last month.
I have heard the story that my mother told me. My mother got this from her mother.

Both my father's mother Jennie and my mother's mother Mary were friends. They did not live to far from each other. Their kids knew each other. Grandmother Jennie was said to have had 19 children. I have come across 8 or 9 of her children's death records who died as infants.

On my exploration through the vital records,
I have discovered 12 children from my Grandma Jennie's first marriage with Grandpa John Blakey.

There were about 4 or 5 in her second marriage with Grandpa Chelton Lyles.

Grandma Jennie was born perhaps in May of 1883 in Carrollton, Mo to Elais W. Bartlett Sr.(born ca 1822 - ? ) and Harriett Hooper (1949-1909.)

Grandma Jennie came from a large family. Great Grandpa Elais was the father of about 9 children:

William, Warren, John, Fanny, Lena, Harriet, Sally, Charles and Lucy
during his first marriage to Rachel (1859 - ?). I believe that there could have been more children born between 1870 - 1878.

There were 5 other children Elais W. Jr, Sam, Jennie , Paul and Juanita by my Great Grandma Harriett Hooper ( 1854 - 1909 ). I believe that there could have been other children 1880 -1892.

I have not come across my Grandparents' marriage record. I can assume that Grandma Jennie and Grandpa John met in Carrollton, MO around the turn of the century. Grandpa John's father, Isaac Blakey came for Howard and Chariton County in MO.

The first record that I have come across my Grandparents together is on a death record. There was a still born female child recorded on November 10, 1902 in St. Joseph Mo. I have located records of 12 children born between 1902 - 1917.

Still born female, Edna, John R Jr., Isaac, Paul, Cecil, Juanita, Mary Jane,
(Rev) Olbery Pierson, David W., Hazel, and Baby BLakley. Only 7 lived to be adults.

I have been trying to piece together the puzzle. On June 27, I came across a death record. I looked at an unknown baby death with our family surname. The parents names of this child were my Grandparents.

I found this to be so interesting.
This baby died three months before my Grandpa John died in July of 1918.
This child was 11 months old without a name. I thought that that was odd.
Grandpa John was the informant.

I am still wondering about the story that my mother told me.
Grandpa John was said to have left his wife and moved north.
I can assume that Grandpa's sickness was so bad that he could not live in his area.
Nor did he want to get his family sick. The air up north may have been better for him.

This meant that Grandma Jennie was raised her 7 children. She had family in town.
Grandma Jennie was about 34 or 35 when she became a widow.

Grandma Jennie later remarried to Grandpa Chelton F. Lyles. I cannot locate their marriage record in MO. I have search if they had children. They had about 4 or 5 children.

Dorothy, Davis, F. Chelton, Geniva, and Edgar. Only 2 lived to be adults. This children were born between 1920 - 1925.

What I mean by 4 or 5 children. I came across two death records with two different names, Davis and Dorothy. Two different death dates July 3, 1920 and July 5, 1920.

Could Dorothy and Davis have been twins? Davis was listed as a female. Grandma Jennie was said to have had twins. This is the only records that could have been.

Grandma Jennie gave birth to a baby boy Edgar in 1925. He died April 16, 1926. It would be 8 months later Grandma Jennie passed on December 29, 1926.

What my mother told me according to my mother's mother Grandma Jennie was a hard worker. Grandma Jennie died of a heart attack. She passed leaving a husband and 9 children.

I have wondered about the stories that my parent shared with me. It's what my parents knew about their ancestors that got me to thinking. I still wonder. Is there more that I can find out?

I was fascinated by what my parents shared with me. Now, as I have been searching,
I have been seeing some of what they said. The clues to the puzzle is being put into place.

I am thankful that I have a family history.
I am thankful that I am in the family of God.
I am thankful that I have a family bloodline.

I am thankful for the goodness of God.
I am thankful for good treasures.
I am thankful that God grants me understanding.
