My Father's Step Father, Chilton Lyles

In Remembrance of Chilton Lyles: My Step-Grandpa

Tuesday's Treasure:
This entry was  dated on  April 28, 1980. And on this day, I was speaking with my father. He was sharing  with me some things about his step father, Chilton Lyles.

My dad said, Mr. Lyles was from Troy, Kansas. And that his mother, (my father's mother, Jennie (Bartlett) Blakley Lyles) and his step father lived in the house where  my father's brother in law, Addison "Ad" Lankford use to live. It was a green house on Locust.

Mr. Lyles had some chickens etc...people stole some of them. The Lyles lived where the old Sears and Roebuck store use to be. My father's mother passed in her home. Mr. Lyles died on his farm in Troy, Kansas.

Some research: The Chilton Lyles Family Connections
===========================================
I've been searching for info on Chilton Lyles. In the beginning, I couldn't find much on him. But, through the years, I've been coming across some things. According to the censuses, city directories and the Lyles children's' birth and or death records, I can assume the following.

Chilton Lyle was born about 1874 in Missouri. Another source states he was born about 1884. Another source states he was born in Kansas.  As I was searching, I noticed that his first name was spelled three ways; Chelton, Clinton or Chilton.

I believe he spelled his name Chilton. As for his surname it was spelled LYLE and LYLES. But, I'm not for sure which was the correct spelling.  I have come across his surname spelled as LYLES than LYLE.
This is Chelton / Chilton LYLES' name. I'm not for sure if it's his signature.
I don't know when Chilton married Jennie (Bartlett) Blakley. It could have been about 1919 or 1920. My father was about 7 or 8.  Jennie passed on in 1926. I have not located Chilton's death record. The last time he was listed in   Troy, Kansas' City directory on March 1, 1948. Perhaps 1948  or 1949 was the year he passed.
When Chilton passed away, my father said Mr. Lyles had a will. He left one of his guns to my father. However, he never received it.

I'm not for sure where Mr. Lyles  was laid to rest. He could have been buried in Troy, KS, Wathena, Kansas or White Cloud, Kansas. On the 1940 census he was living in Center, Doniphan, Kansas. Chilton was listed as single and was unable to work.

I'm not for sure, but I may have come across Chilton listed with his father, siblings or sons with the LYLES surname. I came across a Chilton LYLES with others in the same house in St. Joseph, Missouri as F. Chilton LYLES, Isaac LYLES,  and John LYLES. On another city directory, there was a Chilton LYLES,  Farris LYLES, Gilbert LYLES and John LYLES in the same household in Kansas City.

I hope to find more clues on my Lyles Family Connections. Also, I need to update some of my findings on  the Jennie (Bartlett) Blakley Lyles Family Connection. I have made some more discoveries.  I've over looked . My journey continues.

Mystery Of Chilton and Jennie Lyle

This blog is for the descendants of Chilton Lyle and Jennie Bartlett Lyle. Hope you find this blog interesting. Connections with the missing pieces to the puzzle. I was going to post this at another date. I think now is the now....

I've had been searching for Chilton Lyle for some time. On, 15 November 2010, I finally come across some things. I thought that Step Grandpa Lyles name was Chelton or Clinton Lyles. I came across this information for his wife, Jennie's death record. Jennie ( Bartlett) Blakley Lyles was my grandma.

I did some Missouri death record searches. I came up with the surname spelled LYLE and LYLES. Chilton and Jennie had at least 4 children. Two of their children passed away as infants. Doris or Dorthy Lyle passed in 1920 and Edgar Lyles in 1926 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

I believe that I've located Chilton Lyle on the 1920 census. He was in the___ Hospital No 2 in St. Joseph, MO. I haven't come across Jennie's and Chilton's marriage record. I can assume that they were married some time between Jan to April of 1920.

According to the 1920 census record, Chilton Lyles was born about 1874. He was a farm hand. His place of birth was in the United States. According to one of his children's death record he stated his birth place as Missouri. Jennie didn't know. She stated that Chliton's place of birth was unknown.

Jennie had at least 4 children by Chilton. There was a question of Doris and Dorthy. There were two death records with two names but every thing else was the same. I don't believe that they were twins. Records state single birth.

I lost track of Chilton after Jennie's pass away in December of 1926. On Jennie's death record her husband's name was spelled Chelton Lyles. I tried to track his two children

Faris Chilton Lyle

Geneva Lyle Jones
On the 1930 census Chilton's two children were listed with someone else. It appeared to be a place for children without parents. In 1935 Faris was listed in New York.

I recall looking at St. Joseph, Missouri city directories, I saw that Jennie Lyle lived in a different house then Chilton Lyle. I heard that some of Jennie's children didn't like Old man Lyle. My father did. I heard that Step Grandpa Chilton was a witness to my parents marriage in Troy, Kansas.

From what I recall from my father, David Blakley, Old man Lyle lived in Kansas. He was living with a woman in the 1940's. When Chilton passed away, my father said the he was willed one of Chilton's guns. I haven't found Chilton Lyle / Lyles death record.

I believe that there is more on Chilton Lyle.
Hoping more information will come up.
My search continues..

Family History 2010 Journey: Part 1 New Information

It's been a great year searching on the family history. I came across a lot of information. There were names that I've added to the family tree. There were some people and relatives I've met for the first time.

Here are just a few things I came across.

I came across another connection on Frances Ovington Dade. This branch is on my mother's father's mother Charlotta Dade Lankford. Charlotta had a sister named Louisa Jane Dade Washington. Louisa has a lot of offspring. I came across about 3 or 4 searchers searching the Louisa Dade Washington lineage.

I came across something on my mother's father's father, Robert Louis Lankford. On the 1870 census Robert / Lewis Langford lived on the same block as his future sister in law, Mary Dade Madison. I think Robert went by Louis at times.

I came across something about my mother's father, Leo Lankford. According to Leo's World War II draft registration, he was paralyzed in the left hand and leg since he was four years old. I noticed in some photos Grandpa Leo held his hand a certain way. There are some photos with him with a cane.

I came across something on my mother's mother's mother, Anna Laura Washington Allen Walters. Anna was the mother of three children. I thought that the Walter children were Anna's step children. Anna went by Laura at times. But, I think her first name was Anna.

I came across John Nelson who was Anna Laura Walters grandson by her another daughter, "Bonita"/ Mary who was a Walters. John died in Atchison, Kansas in 1976. I don't know happened to John's parents. John's mother was listed as a widow on the 1910 census.

I came across something on my father's mother, Jennie Bartlett Blakley Lyle. She remarried some time in 1920 to a CHILTON Lyle. I thought her 2nd husband's first name was CHELTON.

Jennie knew Chilton about July of 1919. They had a child named Dorothy born April of 1920. The child later died July of 1920. Not for sure if Dorothy and a twin?

There were two death records. One with Dorothy's name on it. The other with Davis name on it. One died on July 3, 1920. The other on July 5, 1920.

I came across some information that I'm not for sure on my father's father John Blakley. Or  aka John Blakey. There was a black, John Blakey listed in the Kansas City, Missouri area around 1900.

I don't know if it was my Grandpa John. John married Jennie Bartlett in Excelsior Springs, Clay County, Missouri. John married with the BLAKEY surname.

However, John's surname was spelled BLAKYE on the marriage record. Also John was listed from Carrollton, Missouri while Jennie BARTEL was from St. Joseph, Missouri.

I came across some things I've overlooked on the Blakey White family. My father's father's father's mother, Julia White had a granddaughter named, Rebecca White.

On the 1880, Rebecca was listed as mulatto born in Missouri. Her parents were born in Virginia. I don't know if Rebecca carried the White surname. I can assume that Rebecca's parents passed away and Julia took care of her.

I've been searching for Mattie White and her daughter Ella Bentley Carr. I'm still looking into that. I came across an Ella White listed with Mattie who had 5 children...

I can't locate where Mattie and Ella passed away. Mattie died about 1947. Ella died about 1923.  This information was from family reunion booklets.

I found out about Richard "Dick" White's 2nd wife, Belle Stapleton. Her name was Mary Belle Brooks. She was the widow of David Stapleton. David and Belle had three children.

I'm still coming across information. I believe that there is more out there. I believe through time, I may stumble across some more clues. I don't have all the living descendants on the family tree.

Through the years I've been adding names to the family tree. Maybe some day, I'll come across more of the relatives that I don't know about. I'll add them to the list too. The family tree keeps growing.

My Quest Continues...
