An Assumption Of The Life of Julia White: Repost With Updates

I've been thinking about my father', father's, father's mother. I can only imagine who she was. I have made a lot of discoveries on her.  I found out her name through my Great Grandfather, Isaac Blakey's death record.

Her name was Julia White. She was most likely born into slavery in Virginia. Her parents were born in VA. Julia was the wife of Andrew /Andre White. Andrew who was born between 1810 - 1813 in Virginia.

What have I discovered about Julia WHITE?

As I've traced Julia through her slave-owners from Virginia, Julia was in Missouri about 1836.
Her name was either Julia or Julian (FINNEY) WHITE.

Oral history states that she and her children came on a ship from Africa.
I found no evidence of that...
Census records states Julia was born in Virginia (between 1818 to 1820)
Her slave owners came from Orange and Middlesex County Virginia

Julia was most likely with her slave holders Frances (WHITE) BLAKEY
and her husband John BLAKEY around 1835.
She could have been a wedding gift to the Blakeys from Frances' father.
The slave holders resided  in Forest Green MO, Chariton  / Howard County in MO
The BLAKEY / WHITE slave family was divided in 1858 - 1861.
The mother, Julia and her son, Isaac were the last sold. And they went south.
Oral History states, Natchez, Mississippi

Julia could have remarried after slavery. But most likely didn't.
She was listed as a widow in the 1880 MO census.
Don't know how long she was married to Andrew White during slavery.
Or if  Julia and Andrew re united after slavery.
Andrew was with the slave family in March of 1858.

These slaves were believed to have been a family.
The father Andrew and the mother Julia.

Discovery while searching for the name of the mother:
Majority of Julia's known children didn't name their children after her.
This might mean that the children did not know her or their father.
The family was separated...the father passed when some where young.

Julia had about 11 to 13 children born between 1840 - 1866
There could have been more than one father.
One of Julia's children was born in VA.
On 1880 Julia had a granddaughter named Rebecca White.
Rebecca was born in MO and her parents were born in VA.

Names listed on children's death record.
On three children's death record state Andrew White as father.
On John White's death record Julia White as his mother.
On Isaac Blakey's death record Andrew White was listed.
On Spencer White's death record Andre White and Julia Finney were listed.

On Richard White's death record parents unknown
No death record found on Martha / Mattie White
The other children death records not found.

Julia WHITE was listed on the 1880 MO Census as a widow. The year of her death is not known...It may have been in the 1880's. Oral History states that she died and was buried in Forest Green, MO.
The First Baptist Church in Forest Green, Missouri would have been where the family gathered as the church. The cemetery is near far from the church.

There is a possibility that Julia and Andrew had family connections in MO.

There was family with the White surname that lived next door to Julia White.
In Howard County MO on the 1880 Census record.

Isaac  White
Chariton, Howard, MO   abt 1800  Virginia   (Self) (Head)

Andrew White    Isaac, Laura
Chariton, Howard, MO   abt 1850   Missouri  (Son)

Laura White       Andrew, Laura
Chariton, Howard, MO   abt 1855   Missouri  (Andrew's Wife)

Mariah White     Andrew, Laura
Chariton, Howard, MO   abt 1874   Missouri  (Daughter)

July A. White     Andrew, Laura
Chariton,  Howard, MO  abt 1876    Missouri   (Daughter)

Isaac White        Isaac
Chariton, Howard, MO   abt 1878     Missouri  (Son)

The names are similar:
Perhaps Isaac White born in 1800 was a brother of Andrew born in 1810
This Isaac wasn't old enough to be Andrew's father.

Other names....
Andrew White
Laura White
Mariah White
July A
Isaac White

Monday's Mystery: Matt White And The Great Grandmother

I've been searching for info on my slavery Blakey / White Family Connections for years. And through the years, I have found some info. I believe that there's more waiting to be discovered.

In the beginning of my search,  I knew just little about my family connections.  Back in the mid 1970's, I became interested in my family history after reading an article. It was entitle: Slavery Descendants To Have First Reunion.

The above sections of the article is speaking of the family living in Forest Green, Missouri.
The family surname was WHITE. One of the children took the BLAKEY surname.
Who was Matt White?  Matt was my Great Grandfather's Isaac Blakey's sister.  Her real name was Martha White.  Matt or Mattie was her nickname. The article stated that Matt White never married. I haven't found any record of her marrying.

Who was the Great Grandmother? I'm not for sure who the writer of the article was speaking of. The person or people being interviewed could have been speaking of their Great Grandmother. The mother's name wasn't mentioned in this article dated circa 1970.

In 2015, I made the discovery the mother mentioned in this article was  my Great Grandfather's mother, Julia (Finney) White. She would have been the Great Grandmother who was buried in Forest Green, Missouri.

Monday's Mystery:
I can't locate Mattie White's death record. There were two relatives stating that she passed in Forest Green, Missouri in the 1940's.. I though maybe Mattie passed on in another state. Or perhaps Mattie or Martha wasn't her first name. Also she could have married.

I did make a lot of discoveries on Mattie. She did have off springs.  I have spoken with someone who knew her. He doesn't recall Mattie being married. But knew she had a daughter named Bob Ella Bentley.

If you like to read what I have discovered on Mattie, click on The Julia White Connection: The Assumption Of The Life Of Mattie White    I need to update some of Martha White Family Connections. I hope some of Mattie's descendants will come across this blog.

Thanks for reading.

The Andrew And Julia WHITE Family Connections: Spencer WHITE (1852 - 1929)

This is a repost with corrections from October 1, 2012
The Andrew And Julia White Connections: Spencer White ( about 1856- ?)
What is known about Spencer White?

What I've discovered came from census records,
a slave advertisement, letters from relatives, a family history booklets and obituaries.

According to the 1880 census
Spencer was born about 1852 in Missouri.
On the 1900 census he was born about 1855.
The slave ad, he was born about 1852.
His death record
His tombstone states 1857

Spencer White married Miss Malinda Banks on July 15, 1887 in Glasgow, Howard, Missouri.
They were married at City Hall. Malinda had at least one child, Ceola WHITE by Spencer.

Spencer had three daughters

Ceola WHITE REED (1885 - 1983)
Ceola was the wife of Victor "Vic" Reed. They had a son and a daughter.

Sallie WHITE KIRBY HUDSON (1887-  1920 ) I first came across a Sallie Kirby who visited her father Spencer White in Moberly, MO. This led me to more on Sallie. She married Orlando Kirby in Moberly, MO. on January 10, 1910.

Sallie wasn't listed on Spencer's obituary in May of 1929. I assumed that she passed.  Also Sallie was divorced. Orlando was married to  Lottie Ganaway in October 21, 1921 in Jackson County MO.

Obenatta CRAIG PEARL (1886 - 1973)
Obenatta was the wife of Vernon Pearl.  "Benetta's" mother was Dora (CASON) WHITE CRIAG

According to the 1900 census record Spencer was married to a Lou / Lu WASHINGTON who was born about 1865.  According to a census record they were married on October 10, 1895. Lou had no children,

The year of Spencer's death was on May 15, 1929 in Mobley, Missouri. Spencer was born a slave to Frances White Blakey. Spencer was a day laborer. He spoke English.

Spencer didn't live too far from one of his former slaveholder's son, Yelverster C. Blakey. Also Kelly and Jannie Reed lived on College St with the Whites. Perhaps Spencer's daughter, Ceola married one of the Reed's sons.

I came across a Missouri Death record on a Spencer White, a laborer was born July 15, 1856 in Missouri. This Spencer's parents were Ander White and Julia Finney, both from born in MO. Spencer's wife was Fannie. Spencer was buried in Mobley, Missouri in Oakland Cemetery.

I searched the 1910 census record in Randolph County Missouri. This Spencer's parents were born on Virginia. I don't know if Spencer remarried. This Spencer only married once. He was listed with  two daughters.

One was Emely  (Emily) WHITE  born about 1880. I discovered that Emily Hannah married Louis DADE in July of 1907.  Emily was born in 1875.  Lucier (Lucile) White born 1901. Lucile ? perhaps a granddaughter.  Emily was a widow with one child.

When I blog my first post of Spencer, here was want I said on October 1, 2012.  On December I had confirmation that this Spencer WHITE has family connections. It could be that the Missouri death record of Spencer (WHITE) could  have been the son of Andrew White and Julia White. I don't know if Spencer was married to a Fannie. I hope that this is helpful to the descendants of Spencer White. "

I later had confirmation that Spencer was married Mrs. Fannie Brown. They married on November 17, 1906 in Randolph County Missouri. I'm not for sure if Spencer did have other off springs. Emily was listed as Spencer's daughter. Perhaps a descendant of Spencer WHITE may come across this blog.

Here is the tombstone of Spencer White in Oakland Cemetery.
The birth year reads 1857.
Emily DADE was Spencer's wife Fannie's daughter.
Photo used with permission to share family history.

Article Reflections: Slavery Descendants To Have First Reunion: Part 12

Article written about 1971 or so.
Some final thoughts on this article.

As I was going thought each sentence of this article, I wasn't aware of some things.
As I was going blog to blog, I noticed that I added more and more as I went along.

I was trying to see what the writer was trying to share. There were some generation gaps in the beginning of this article. There could have been a generation that came from Africa who were shipped to New Orleans in 1843.

I have no leads on that. I have found out the  family came from through corresponds with a cousin. One of the Yankton, South Dakota descendant said the family came from off the coast of Nigeria.

As for the mother and 5 children, they could have been a family in 1843. But not the one that matches up with the Isaac that ran off to join the Civil War.

I wasn't for sure about some things until I came across the slave ad that lead to more discoveries. And what a discovery that was. I was seeing the names of my 2nd Great Grand parents' names with some of their children. How aweful to be a slave and be sold.

1858 Ad

Andrew White was believed to have been the father of Julia's children.
Andrew or Julia may have had a mulatto child.

Here is a list the children that I have come up with.
Unknown child who had a child named Rebbecca
Mary WHITE,
Linda WHITE,
Lydia WHITE
Isaac BLAKEY who married Martha SCOTTt and Rachel LEPHRIDGE
Andrew WHITE
Ben (Benjamin) WHITE
Spencer WHITE who married Melinda BANKS and Lou
Josh (Joshua) WHTIE who had 3 daughters and a son named John BLAKE
David WHITE
Martha WHITE who was a widow
Mattie WHITE who was a widow with 5 children
Richard "Dick" WHITE who married Jane FERGUSON and Mary Belle BROOKS

Isaac was the only one who carried the BLAKEY surname.  There are many unanswered questions that we will never find. But the descendants of this union have some history to past down to the next generations.

I hope others will pass down what they know and or heard of on their family history. Each family has a history to share. May we learn to record what we know.

Susan

Empolyment , Homeland And Surnames ~ Part 6

They found worked on farms. And lived in Forest Green Missouri area.
They kept their own names. White And Blakey
 More clues and a mystery.

They were employed and made their homes in Forest Green, MO.
Where did they work? As farmer or as farm hands?

What names did each family member take?
The mother in this article was unknown.
But later I came across her name in 1989.

What names did each one take?
The mother, WHITE
Isaac BLAKEY
John WHITE
Spencer WHITE
Matt WHITE
Dick WHITE

It appears that Isaac was the only one in his group that took the surname of BLAKEY. Don't know why Isaac kept the BLAKEY surname. Perhaps he was with the BLAKEYs for a long time. They may have helped him to his freedom. Two of the former slave owners gave affidavit of who Isaac was. Isaac applied for his pension records in 1890's.

Also for the mother, Did she have other children? Yes. She had about 12 or 13 children. Some of the children may have passed away before the turn of the century. Some of the family members may not have know about them.

The article states that Matt WHITE never married. As I searched for Mattie White, I came up with her as a widow with about 5 children. I don't know how this information got lost.

The big mystery to this part of the article: Who was the great grand mother? Was the writer in this article speaking of Ted Blakey's great grand mother? The mother of the slaves  or the mother's husband's mother?

The mother was believe to have passed away and was buried in Forest Green, MO. Most those who passed away in this family were buried in Forest Green, MO and area.
There are some descendants who still live in the Forest Green Area.

Part 2: Blakey - White Families: The Year 1843

The first two sentences of this article:

The introduction of the article gives some good information: the families surnames, a year, a name and the place; Riverside Park. The date of the article was not listed or the State where the reunion took place. I later found out the reunion was held in Iowa around 1971.

According to one of the descendants, Ted Blakey from Yankton, South; a mother, and her four sons and a daughter came to New Orleans on a ship in 1843. I don't know where Ted Blakey got this info -

Ted could have been oral history from his father, Henry Blakey who passed down what he heard and or what others said about the family history. After researching, I came across the list of some of the slaves' names and the Blakey slave owners' names.

The article mention the year 1843 and a place. I can trace back to the year 1843 through information that I came across. But the article raises some questions about when the family came to New Orleans.
This article states that the mother and her children can on a ship from some where to New Orleans. That somewhere was perhaps Africa or from another State in America?

Question: Did the mother and 5 children remain in New Orleans for a while before they were moved to MS? (There were some things in these two sentences that didn't match up with the other records that I have come across.)

By this article, the reader can assume that the mother and her children weren't born in America. Over the years, I wondered. Could there have been another generation that came from Africa? After researching, I did discovered that the mother of Isaac (and the other children) was born in VA. One of the mother's or father's children was born in VA. The mother's other children were born in MO.

I'm not trying to disprove any thing stated in the article: Slavery Descendants to Have First Reunion. I see some things in the article that brings questions. The reporter could have wrote down  incorrect information. Still there was a lot of information in this article. (That was what inspired me to began to search out what I could find.)

Unusual Thing

This is a re post from my Xanga site from Sunday, 20 January 2008

One day I was listening to a daily radio talk show that was in Kansas City, MO. The topic for the day was on Is it Black American? or African American? It was a debate on which is appropriate.

I listened on as the two men were debating. They were disagreeing about some things. One made the point and said that some Blacks in American don't know where their ancestors came from. And for those are of Africa descend have lost connections with the "Mother Country."

At that time I could not see the big deal about what they were debating about. I am proud to be an American. Most of my ancestors came from Africa. I consider myself an American.

I have connection with Africa through my bloodline. But I have lost the traditions of the African culture. If I say that I am an African American, I am saying that I have Africa connections only.

I can say only some of my ancestors where from Africa. When my ancestors came to America, a new identity took place. African and their descendants had to adapt to new things in a new country.

Back to the radio debate.

Then as I was thinking as I was standing on this issue at hand, I had a thought come to me about my Great Grandpa Isaac's death record. He was listed as an African. I thought to my self, How could this be? He was born in Fayette or Roanoke, MO in June of 1847.

I had wondered about this for many years when I came across that information about my Great Grandpa. I continued to listen to the radio program. The two men where addressing why each preferred what they believe.

Then an Unusual Thing happened to me. As I was listening on to the radio program, out of nowhere, I heard a voice come to me, as I was thinking: how could my Great Grandpa have been an African born in MO? This "VOICE" said that "his parents were Africans."

I stopped what I was doing. I thought to myself "that makes sense." It made me feel good after I heard that voice. I did wondered about that "VOICE" later on.

What I had assumed by what the "VOICE" said that my Great Grandpa's parents where Africans or their parents were born in Africa. I have never thought that until that "VOICE" came to me.

Special Footnote:

At one time or another in our lives we have questionnaires or survey that when might have to answered. What is your race or nationality? Some of my American ancestors listed themselves as Blacks, Mulattoes, Negro or Colored. My parents listed themselves as Blacks; at times I seen the word colored.

I list myself under the category of Black American. There are other races that are connected with my bloodline. American Indian from all my Grandparents' sides.

My parents' parents were either listed as Blacks or Mulattoes. It was by word of mouth about the Indian blood. For some reason they acknowledge themselves as Blacks more so.

I am not ashamed of my family lineage. I can say that some of my ancestors could have been White. It was possible. I don't rule that out.

I am proud of who I am. I am a human being. I am one of God's creation. I am beautifully and wonderful made by Him.

Jeremiah 1:5 NLT "I knew you before I formed you in your mother's womb. Before you were born I set apart and appointed you as my spokesman to the world."

Special Note: If you want to read more on my Great Grandpa Isaac:

On my journey of transformation.
When the unexpected comes, I have to stop and think and listen to the VOICE within. I need to see the good of what is there. I need not to get upset by what has happened. Everything is going to be all right. So wait on the LORD.

Father God, I am thankful for Your VOICE. I am thankful for unsolved FAMILY MYSTERY. I am thankful for the DOOR of HOPE that is always open.

I am thankful for the force of FAITH. I am thankful that I have Civil Rights. I am so thankful that I am a HUMAN BEING.

I am thankful for PROVISION for my life. I am thankful for those who have their HEALING from restored emotions. I am thankful for the DELIVERANCE of those once held captives by addictions.

I am thankful for those who were once blind but now see the SALVATION in Jesus Christ. I am thankful for SIGNS and WONDERS that are there for Your glory. I am thankful that I have a Book of Thanks and Blessings in Jesus' name Amen.

Project: The Julia White Connectons ~ Reflections

I've been thinking about my Project: The Julia White Connections. I have compiled the list of some of Julia's children. and the ones who had children. The ones with children included; Isaac Blakey, Spencer White, John White, Mattie White and Richard White.

Julia had at least 12 or 13 children. I'm lead to believe that one of Julia's children was born in Virginia. I believe at least three of Julia's children either The Unknown Child born in VA, Linda, Lydia, Martha, and Joshua had a child or children.

I've been re reading some of my old letters from cousins. One cousin said that one of Julia's daughter had a son. That son had children that lived in Forest Green, Missouri. Julia's daughter could have been Linda or Lydia.
According to one cousin, one of Julia's daughter passed away before 1904 in Forest Green, MO. As for Martha, I still don't know if she was Mattie, both were widows.  I believe that Martha had children.

There are many questions that remind about Julia's grandchildren. Julia had a grandson named Andrew White. He was born in Missouri about 1878. Who was Andrew's Missouri parents?

I believe that there was an Unknown Child born in Virginia who had a daughter named Rebeca White. I'm not for sure if Rebeca's maiden name was White. I have come across a Becky that had the surname of White.

Perhaps this was Rebeca. Becky and Rebeca were born about 1870 in Missouri. Becky was married. I only found Rebeca on the 1880 census. She was listed as mulatto and the Granddaughter of Julia White.

I've been searching for Joshua White and his off springs. I had confirmation from letters of two cousins stating that Joshua had three daughters and one son. That son's name was John BLAKE. John was raised by a large family with the BLAKE surname.

I think, I've come across that John with his mother. John was married. One census stated that John was divorce. I came across a John Blake's death record. He could have been the Joshua's son John. I'm not 100 % sure.

This John Blake was a barber. He was about 50 years old at the time of his passing. John was listed as a widow. His mother was Mary Blake. His father was listed as what appeared start with a J. Looks like Jones or James Blake. Not for sure.

The name doesn't appear to be Louis. But in a way it could be. However there was no indication that any of the letters was an I. There wasn't a dot, if it was an i.

I think that John Blake was counted twice on the 1930 census. John was listed with his father, Louis. And other place. I've check who the informant was on John's death record. The person was a Neltli or Nellie Black.

I check for Nellie Black's death record. Nellie was the daughter of Louis and Mary Ann Johnson Blake. Nellie lived in Salisbury, MO. That was what connected John's death record.

I need to write another blog on what I come up with on John Blake. I went back over the census records for John Blake. I'm still checking into the 1930 census. John was listed as the father of two sons. I've been looking into that. I'm not for sure if that was correct.

I'm assuming who Rebeca White could have been. I think I've come across some information. I'm not for sure. But I plan to blog an update on Rebeca.

Also I plan to post some blogs on Mattie White's children. Who they were. I think there's more information. Thanks to some searchers who have help me... I've  saw some things that  connected.

I'm still on the trail of The Julia White Connections. I believe that there are people searching for this lineage. The White surname is hard to trace. But with persistence, things can be narrowed down. The names, dates and places are a great help.

Thanks for reading.

I hope to come across more information in the future.
I hope others see some connections.

Project: The Julia White Connections

I've have a list of Julia's children in whom I've little information on. It was more of a task to find Julia's children. Indeed it has been a project. Here are the list of children that I've found very little information on. The sources came from census records, and a slave ad and a marriage record.

Names                                            Source of Julia's Children
Unknown White  born VA            (1880 Census Granddaughter)
Linda White        born MO 1841  (Slave Ad 1858)
Mary White        born MO 1844   (Slave Ad 1858)
Ben White           born MO 1849   (Slave AD 1858)
Andrew White     born MO 1849   (A Researcher)
Lydia White        born MO 1852   (A Researcher)
David White        born MO 1858   (1880 Census)
Joshua White      born MO 1860   (1880 Census)
Martha White     born MO 1862   (1880 Census)

I have searched for each of this children in the Howard County and Chariton County area. I can't locate or find connections to Linda, Ben, Andrew, Lydia, David, and Martha. Only that Martha who was a widow.

Joshua White was said to have had 3 children. Three daughters and one son. The son's was named John Blake. John was raised by a family with the surname of Blake.

I did locate a Mary White. I'm not for sure if she is the one I'm looking for. I see that a Abram Harriss married a Mary White in Chariton County, MO.

I believe that Julia's children did keep in contact with family members. Julia's children lived in the Chariton and Howard County Area in Missouri.

I'm working on future blogs on the following...
I've posted Mattie White

(Click on Names Below)             Source Of Julia's Children

Isaac Blakey born ca 1845     (Slave Ad, 1880 Census, Pension Records,
                                                News Article)

Spencer White born ca 1852   (Slave Ad, 1880/ 1900 Census,
Update on Spencer                      New Article)

John White born ca 1858        (Slave Ad, 1880/ 1900 Census, Death Record,
                                                   News Article)

Mattie White born ca 1856    (News Article, Census Records)

Richard White born ca 1866  (News Article)

I'm still searching. I hope that someone on the White Lineage will search as well. Hopefully some day there will be some connections. I hope so.

Thanks for reading.

The Julia White Connection

I was looking back over the 1880 census record on Julia White, my father's father's father's mother. I came across something that I over looked. Julia had a grand daughter named Rebecca  White born in MO. Rebecca's parents were from VA.

So that meant...at least one of Julia's children was born in VA. Rebecca was listed as mulatto. I don't know which of Julia's child was the parent of Rebecca.

But as I looked at a slave schedule in 1850, I see a male mulatto who was 20. Perhaps that was Andrew's who was 40 or Julia's who was about 32.... a son...Would Julia have another son? The ages could have been different. The mulatto son could have been younger.

I am not for sure how many children Julia had. I have compiled names from the census records, news clip and other material I have found over the years.

Here is the list of Julia's children:

Linda White
born 1841

He did marry. First to Martha Scott who had twin sons.
He later married Rachel Ann Leftridge / Lephridge who had 18 children.

John White
He married Katherine / Katie Estell who had 9 children.

Spencer White
He did marry First to Melinda Banks who had 3 daughterss
Than re married to Lou ?

Mattie White
She was said to have not married.
I don't know if Mattie and Martha were the same person.
I've come across both Mattie and Martha who were widowed on the census records.
I've found only on Martha on the 1880 Census.
Mattie was listed as having about 5 children on one of the census.

Richard White

He did marry. First to Jane Fergerson who had 13 or 14 children.
Richard married Mary Belle Brooks who was the widow of David Stapleton.
