The Mattie White Connections: Oressia Hereford

In early October of 2011,I send off the death record of Oressia Hereford. I was curious to see how her father was. I figured that her mother's name was Mattie White. I got that off of census records.

I can't recall why I came across those census record. Back then it seem to be a mystery to me. I have always thought the Mattie never married. And that she only had one child. Her name was Bob Ella Bentley.

But through my search for Mattie White, I came across more children. Mattie had about 5 children. Only two in which I have located. Ella was went Oressia on the 1910 census with their mother, Mattie.

I haven't located Mattie's children, Patrick, Alice or Jane. I don't know which surname they may have went by. Oressia went by her father's surname Hereford.

On October 6, 2011, I received Oressia's death record through the mail. I was anxious to see what was on it. Oressia was born on March 16, 1904 in Missouri, Her father's name was Robert "Bob" Hereford.

I did more record on Oressia father. Robert "Bob" was the son of James Madison "Mat" Herriford / Herryford and Jannett "Jaenette (Page) Heryford. The Hereford surname was spelled at least four ways. Herefore, Herriford, Herryford, and Heryford.

From what I've heard Orressia never married. She had no children. According to her death record, she resided in Keytesville MO. She passed away in Fulton, Callaway County in Missouri.

I wonder about the mystery of Mattie's children. I'm glad that I've found out this much. I hope that some of Mattie's descendant would a  connection. Mattie did have a grandson named Willard or William Carr. He was the child of Ella Bentley Carr.

Hope that this information was helpful.
Hope that some will see a connection and add more to this story.

My Assumption On Who John Blake May Have Been

I was re reading some of the old family letters. Two of my cousin spoke of a John Blake who was a son of Josh or Joshua White. Joshua was the son of Andrew and Julia White.

According to my cousins, Josh White had three daughters and a son named John. Joshua died. John was raised by a large family with the BLAKE surname. The cousins didn't mention about Josh's three daughters.

I  searched the census looking for this John Blake. I believe that I've found him. I saw at least to coincidences. I first notice on the 1910 census that there was a John Blake with wife Arrette. There was a Mattie White listed with them.

This Mattie was born about 1877 in MO. Mattie was a widow. She had 5 children. Only 4 were living at the time the census was taken. However, the children's names were not listed with Mattie.

I searched to back track and to find out who was this Mattie White?. I saw that this Mattie may have been counted twice on the 1910 in Howard County. I came across a Mattie White who was a widow with 5 children with one deceased. She was listed with her 4 children.

I searched records to find out; who was John Blake?  I came across one John who fits the description on what my cousins spoke about. John was raised in a large family. This John was listed on the 1900 census with Louis and Mary Blake. John was Louis' step son.

As I continued to search for John Blake, I saw some similarities. He was the same John listed with Mattie on the 1910 census. John later was divorce some time before 1930. Louis was listed as John's father on the 1920 and 1930 census. Also on the WW II draft Louis was listed as John's father. John was born in 1880.

In my later search, I discovered more about John. I located his death record and pieced together who John Blake could have been. John H. Blakey was born on May 29, 1880 in Fayette, MO. His mother was Mary Anna Johnson or Potte.

Mary was born on Dec 4, 1865 and passed away on April 15, 1918 in Howard County MO. Her parents were Merritt Potte and  Becky Bentley. Mary married Louis Blake in 1885.
John's the father's first name on John's death is a ? It appears to start with the letter J. It appears to James not Louis Blake. John's surname was listed as Blake. Louis was the son of Ceaser and Trusty Blake

Mary had about 12 children: John her first born then Merritt, William, Nellie, Rector, Oscar, George , Frank, Eleanor, Maggie, Corine, (1907 - 1967) and Swetzie Blake.

I'm not for sure if this John had  any children. He was listed with a son named Cortez Jaco, He was born about 1926 in Missouri. and Harold Valentine born about 1927 in MO. Cortez and Harold could have been his nephews. But I'm not for sure.

It appeared that John carried the BLAKE surname through out his life. His surname wasn't BLAKEY. John may have never know that Josh White was his father.

John passed away on Oct 5, 1930 in Hannibal, Missouri. He was listed as a widow and a barber. Nettie Black was the informant on John's death record. I reached for Nettie Black. She was John's sister.

Perhaps some one will come across this website and clarify some things.

What About The Sisters With The White Surname?

I can't recall when I heard that there were other sisters in the Blakey/ White Family.
As I've been searching, I came up with 4 or 5 sisters.
Their names  and year of birth were believed to have been as followed.

Linda     White born about 1841
Mary     White born about 1844
Lydia    White born about 1852
Martha  White born about 1862
Mattie   White  born about 1856

I don't know if Martha and Mattie were the same person.
Both were widowed.
I haven't  found any records of Martha connected in Chariton County Missouri.
Martha was only listed on the 1880.
I have located Mattie White with her children.
Mattie wasn't listed on the 1880.
She was listed on the 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940.
Either Linda, Lydia or Martha passed away about 1904 in Forest Green, Missouri.
One of the sister had a son who had children.

Family history states that Mattie never married and had one daughter.
That daughter was Bob Ella BENTLEY CARR
I have come across Mattie with at least 5 children.
According to the census records Mattie was a widow.
On the 1940 Census Mattie's surname was HEREFORD.
However on the other census records, Mattie's surname was WHITE.
Mattie was stated to have passed away in April of 1947 in Forest Green, Missouri.
I haven't located her death record.
Perhaps she passed away in another State.

There is a news clipping that list some of the BLAKEY slaves.
Linda (White) and Linda (White) were the only 2 sisters
listed on the slave advertisement in 1858.
There were two children not listed.
We can assume who those children were.
Ad appeared in a Missouri Newspaper in 1858
I've been trying to locate the BLkAKEY /WHITE Family on the 1870 census.
I haven't locate them.
The story has it that the mother, Julia White went to Natchez, Mississippi.
I can assume that some of her children would have been with her.
I haven't located Julia on the census either.

I do believe that either Mary, Linda, Lydia or Martha had off springs.
I hope some day that someone will see a connection.

Project: The Julia White Connectons ~ Reflections

I've been thinking about my Project: The Julia White Connections. I have compiled the list of some of Julia's children. and the ones who had children. The ones with children included; Isaac Blakey, Spencer White, John White, Mattie White and Richard White.

Julia had at least 12 or 13 children. I'm lead to believe that one of Julia's children was born in Virginia. I believe at least three of Julia's children either The Unknown Child born in VA, Linda, Lydia, Martha, and Joshua had a child or children.

I've been re reading some of my old letters from cousins. One cousin said that one of Julia's daughter had a son. That son had children that lived in Forest Green, Missouri. Julia's daughter could have been Linda or Lydia.
According to one cousin, one of Julia's daughter passed away before 1904 in Forest Green, MO. As for Martha, I still don't know if she was Mattie, both were widows.  I believe that Martha had children.

There are many questions that remind about Julia's grandchildren. Julia had a grandson named Andrew White. He was born in Missouri about 1878. Who was Andrew's Missouri parents?

I believe that there was an Unknown Child born in Virginia who had a daughter named Rebeca White. I'm not for sure if Rebeca's maiden name was White. I have come across a Becky that had the surname of White.

Perhaps this was Rebeca. Becky and Rebeca were born about 1870 in Missouri. Becky was married. I only found Rebeca on the 1880 census. She was listed as mulatto and the Granddaughter of Julia White.

I've been searching for Joshua White and his off springs. I had confirmation from letters of two cousins stating that Joshua had three daughters and one son. That son's name was John BLAKE. John was raised by a large family with the BLAKE surname.

I think, I've come across that John with his mother. John was married. One census stated that John was divorce. I came across a John Blake's death record. He could have been the Joshua's son John. I'm not 100 % sure.

This John Blake was a barber. He was about 50 years old at the time of his passing. John was listed as a widow. His mother was Mary Blake. His father was listed as what appeared start with a J. Looks like Jones or James Blake. Not for sure.

The name doesn't appear to be Louis. But in a way it could be. However there was no indication that any of the letters was an I. There wasn't a dot, if it was an i.

I think that John Blake was counted twice on the 1930 census. John was listed with his father, Louis. And other place. I've check who the informant was on John's death record. The person was a Neltli or Nellie Black.

I check for Nellie Black's death record. Nellie was the daughter of Louis and Mary Ann Johnson Blake. Nellie lived in Salisbury, MO. That was what connected John's death record.

I need to write another blog on what I come up with on John Blake. I went back over the census records for John Blake. I'm still checking into the 1930 census. John was listed as the father of two sons. I've been looking into that. I'm not for sure if that was correct.

I'm assuming who Rebeca White could have been. I think I've come across some information. I'm not for sure. But I plan to blog an update on Rebeca.

Also I plan to post some blogs on Mattie White's children. Who they were. I think there's more information. Thanks to some searchers who have help me... I've  saw some things that  connected.

I'm still on the trail of The Julia White Connections. I believe that there are people searching for this lineage. The White surname is hard to trace. But with persistence, things can be narrowed down. The names, dates and places are a great help.

Thanks for reading.

I hope to come across more information in the future.
I hope others see some connections.

One Final Note:
Richard wasn't listed with his mother and siblings on the 1880 in Chariton County Census. I did located a Richard White about 12 years old as a hired hand to a Daniel White.

I believe this Richard was the same one. Daniel White was the brother of Frances White Blakey. Frances Blakey was the slave owner of Julia White. During slavery Frances may have sold Richard to Daniel. Richard may have stayed on with Daniel White as a hired hand.

Richard was listed on the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses. The 1870 I've found to Richard White's don't know which one was the son of Julia White.

I hope descendants of Richard "Dick" White discover this information.
Or Perhaps someone can add more information.
