Searched Census To Identify Harriett And Her Three Children

 Searching From What’s Known
Harriet’s future husband, Elias W. Bartlett Sr. was listed with his first wife, Rachel on the 1870 Missouri Census in Carroll County. Question: Where was Harriett and the other three Bartlett children who were born before the 1870 census was taken?

On November 7, 2022, I began to search for Harriett on the 1870 Carroll County Missouri census. I searched for every black Harriett born in Missouri around 1849 and one by one, I looked to see if there were key names in the same household. Those key names were her Grandmother Hannah and three children, Sallie, Charles, and Lucy.

The Newest Discovery

Actually, this is an old discovery that became new once I saw it again. I came across the household of HESLIN before. I didn’t see the connection then. But, the second time around, I was filled with joy when I saw the names Hannah, Harriett and Sally, Charles and Lucy. This was confirmation.

Harriett BARTLETT’s and her three children’s ages were similar to the 1880 census. However, Hannah was listed as born in North Carolina on the 1870 census at age 80. But on the 1880 census Hannah was born in South Carolina and her age was at 115. This is 35 years older in ten years.

I believe that this Harriet, her children and her Grandmother, Hannah are the ones that I’ve been searching for. They were listed with William HESLIN born in 1810 in Kentucky. He who was head of house. Hannah B. HESLIN born in 1790 North Carolina.( Note that Harriett had a grandmother by the name of Hannah HOOPER on the 1880 Missouri census in Carrollton County Missouri.)

It appears that Elias W. Bartlett Sr. was not the father of Sally, Charles and Lucy. This would make sense, if they weren’t listed with him on the 1870 Missouri census. It appears that the three children took the Bartlett surname. I wonder what were their surname?

What’s Next?
Ironically, I can’t locate the family with the Heslin surname on the 1880 census for Carroll County Missouri. I’m wondering. Is there another way to spell that surname? Could Helsin have been their enslaved surname? Also note that I have found Sally, Charles and Lucy were listed as mulatto on other records.

Sarah “Sallie’s maiden name was Shaw. This came from an Ohio 1919 marriage record of Myrtle Younger, daughter of Sarah “Sallie”. The Shaw name is something to look into.

Questions And Wonder:
Who was Harriett ( BUFFINGTON / HOOPER BARTLETT?
She was my Great Grandmother, Harriett. My father’s David’s grandmother.
I wonder if Hannah could have been Harriett’s great grandmother.

The Mariah HELSIN was born in North Carolina in 1830. She was Williams’ daughter .
Was William HELSIN Hannah’s son?
Or if Williams’ wife was Hannah’s daughter?
Wonder if Sophiah, Harriett and Allen were siblings?

I wonder if Hannah’s surname was Buffington?
Listed as Hannah B. HELSIN on the 1870 census. Harriett’s maiden name was listed as Buffington on her daughter, Lucy’s social security application in 1939.

Week 8 ~ Amy Johnson Crow #52Ancestors in 52 Weeks ~ Generations CafĂ©

The theme for Week 8 is “I Can Identify.” Genealogy research is about identifying the correct people to attach to our family trees. Who have you worked hard to identify? Another way to interpret the theme would be to highlight someone like my grandfather, who could spot (and correctly identify all kinds of mushrooms. (My sisters and I never got the knack of doing that!)

Searching For Descendants Of Sarah "Sallie" Bartlett - Wade H. Peyton Sr

I've been searching for the where a bouts of The Bartlett - Peyton Family.  I've been piecing some of the story on the family. I started searching for a Peyton with the first name of Sallie. I came across a Sallie Peyton on the Kansas State census in 1885.

Through the years, I have compiled some info on the Peyton Family. Here's some of what I  have discovered. Wade Hampton Peyton Sr. married Sarah "Sallie" Bartlett. They had a son named Wade H. Peyton Jr. and a daughter, Myrtle Peyton.

Through research, I've discovered that Myrtle Peyton was living with her grandmother, Harriett  Bartlett in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1900. We can presume that Myrtle's parents passed on when she was a child. Myrtle was born in Topeka, Kansas about Dec of 1886.

Miss Myrtle Peyton married William Younger in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1903. They have two daughters, Gaynelle and Udlene Younger. Myrtle and William later divorce. Myrtle moves to Cuyahoga County, Ohio. where she later marries Earl C. Miller. Myrtle's last where a bout was in  Chicago, Cook, Illinois in the 1940's. I came across a record with her surname of Younger.

As for Wade Hampton Peyton Jr., I couldn't find him on the 1900 census.  I first came across him on the 1885 Kansas census. Then I located  his WW I draft card. He was living in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa in 1917 - 1918. His sister, Myrtle Younger was listed as his next of kin on his WW I draft card.

I recently came across a new found discover on Wade Jr. He was married to a Anna L. Wynne in MO. As I searched and found more on Wade Peyton Jr. through the city directories, he lived in at least 3 States. He was in Nebraska, Iowa and later in Tennessee. In Nebraska he was first listed as a student. According to his WW I draft card, he worked as a waiter at Black Stone Hotel in Omaha, Nebraska.

I've come across a newspaper article on Wade H. Peyton and his late wife, Anna who passed on in 1910. I'm trying to piece together when Wade and Anna moved to Nebraska. And when Wade moved to Tennessee.

According to Wade Peyton Jr's death record and tombstone, he was a doctor. I haven't located records on what type of doctor he was. Wade Jr.  married his second wife Katherine A / "Katie" Robinson  Peyton. They had a son named Wade H. Peyton III. And a daughter named Thomas Sarah Peyton.

I  discovered that Wade H. Peyton Jr. was in Lincoln, Nebraska from about 1907 to 1914 and 1928. He was listed as a waiter, a student and later a physician.  He was listed in Nashville, Tennessee in 1920, 1922 and 1929 and in Athens, Limestone, Alabama on the 1930 and 1940 censuses.

At the time of Wade Peyton Jr's death record, he was living in Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee. He was a widow. (His wife, Katherine passed on in 1954.) Their children, Wade Peyton, the III passed on in  Alameda, California in 1985. Thomas Sarah Anderson passed on in  Westmoreland, Sumner, Tennessee in 2013.

I hope and pray that some of The Bartlett - Peyton Family Connections will come across this blog. It's interesting to find more on family history. Hope to discover more.

May we not give up on searching for our family history.

Thanks for reading.

Searching For Family Connections: The Sarah "Sallie" Bartlett - Peyton Family

I've been searching for info on a Sallie BARTLETT for years. All I knew about her was that she was the daughter of Elias BARTLETT. She was born about 1866 in Missouri. Her mother's first name may have been Rachel.

Over the years, I have had trouble finding leads on Sallie. I tried piecing what I knew together. But,  I thought I wouldn't find any more on her. So, I begin to search from what I knew on the Bartlett's.

At some point in my search, I came across a (mulatto)  child named Myrtle PEYTON. She was the granddaughter of Harriet (HOOPER) BARTLETT. Myrtle was born about 1886 in Kansas. I figured that one of Harriet's daughter married a PEYTON. And I worked from there.

I first came across Myrtle on the 1900 census with the Bartlett family. Later, I discovered that Myrtle at age 17, married a William YOUNGER in Buchanan County in Missouri. Also there was a Lucile Mossell who was a witness to their marriage.  Lucile "Lucy" was Myrtle's aunt through the Bartlett connections.

I kept trying to locate a Myrtle Peyton. Which daughter of Harriet's could have been Myrtle's mother? I narrowed it down to two. Lucy or Sallie. I search for both. I kept coming up hitting brick walls. I still couldn't connect.  I took a break from searching for Myrtle.

Somehow, I kept looking for other Bartletts and Peytons. I came across a Wade Hampton PEYTON with his parents. His mother's name was Sallie. Wade was named after his father. I kept searching for Sallie and Wade.

As I kept searching, I came across Wade Jr's WWII draft card. I didn't know what I would find out.  But low and behold.... The next of kin on  his record was Myrtle Younger. Yes, that was his sister. Then this lead my search for Sallie.... I discovered that her name was Sarah.

I later made discoveries on the PEYTON Family Connections.  Oh what great joy that was!  I continue to search for the PEYTON Family. It was interesting to have found out that Myrtle's brother , Wade Hampton Peyton Jr. was a doctor.

As for Myrtle, she and William had two daughters. Myrtle later divorced William. She later married  Earl C. MILLER. On Myrtle's marriage licence to Earl, it stated that Myrtle's  mother, Sarah's maiden name was Shaw.  Now, that got me to thinking. Who was Sarah's mother?

The Search Continues... See Any Connections?

I'm hoping to find more on the BARTLETT- PEYTON Family Connections. I believe that there are descendants out there. Myrtle's daughter's married names were Taylor and Duke. I hope that someone will have more info. Perhaps that someone is you.

May the Lord grant the hunger in people to search for their ancestors. May there be leads to follow. May the beauty of the Lord brings surprises along the journey. Amen!

Family Connections: The Sarah "Sallie" Bartlett - Peyton Family: One final note:Oral history: I recall my parents say that one of Jennie (Bartlett) Blakley Lyle's sister married a doctor.
I haven't found info on that sister.
Who was Jennie? She was the sister of Sallie and Lucy.
