My Father's Family Surname

Entry dated Dec 5, 1983
My father said "that when he was young, he heard that the name Blakey was taken off a billboard. Old timers said this (when Isaac was passing on his way south to Mississippi?)

Some thoughts and research info

I asked my father, why the family surname was spelled Blakey? He said that he didn't know why. But, that was what he heard the older relatives said how to spell the family surname. My father said that he was taught to spell the family surname Blakley.

As I've done some research, a cousin told me some thing similar to what my father said. Also this cousin said that it was a barber shop billboard. There was a story behind it. But, my cousin didn't get to share that story with me.

While I kept searching on my family history, I discovered something interesting bout the family history. Some of the former slave family members took the White surname. But, Isaac took the Blakey surname. It's interesting to know that the former slave-owner Frances Blakey's maiden name was WHITE.

The slave family was divided before the Civil War broke out. Then after the war, the former slaves gathered as a family. Only Isaac took the Blakey surname. Perhaps it was because Isaac became a free man and joined the Union Army in Natchez, MS in 1863.

Another twist to the story about the family surname. It's ironic that Isaac's surname in the Civil War was  BLAKER.  How he came up with that surname a mystery. That's odd.

Perhaps he couldn't use his former surname as a slave. So the R was replace the Y. Isaac stated that his name was Isaac Blakey as he applied to pension benefits. There was no record of Isaac Blakey on file. Though Isaac did prove that he was Isaac Blaker.

As for the blakey surname, the name could have been how people thought  it should have been spelled. Or it's how it sound when people heard it.  It's so with the Blakley surname. My Grandpa John Blakey changed the surname to Blakley. Indeed that surname has been spelled Blakely and  other ways as well.

I ordered a birthday 🎂. Here's my last name I saw on the box.
I had a smile on my face...and said I'm here for the BLAKEY 🎂. Yes, I calmed it.

Tracing The LANKFORD / LANKFARD Family Surname: Through James

Was his name, James Andrew Lankford?
James Andrew LANKFARD? Or both?

James was the son of Robert and Charlotta (DADE) LANKFORD / LANKFARD.
He was their first born son, on October 26, 1874, in Monticello, Missouri.
His year of birth could have been in 1873.

According to city directories, his surname varied from
 Lankford, Langford and Lankfard.
He was first listed on the 1894 city directory with the LANGFORD surname.
and 1894 - 1897 with the surname LANKFORD.
In 1898 he was listed with both the LANKFARD and LANKFORD surname.

James on the census records:
1880: Wasn't listed
1900 LANKFARD
1910 LANGFORD
1920 LANGFORD
1930 LANKFARD
1940 LANKFORD

According to the U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007
His name was James Andrew LANKFARD in the year 1943.
So which surname was the one for James?
Here's an excellent example.
I noted it when I first read it. You should too.

This post card written on Feb 1, 1910. It was addressed to Mrs. Sallie J. LANKFARD.
The sender was Louis "Add" LANKFARD, Sallie's brother in law.
Subject was on Sam LANGFORD, the boxer.

I haven't found any Lankfard family connections with Sam Langford.

According to the WWI draft registration signature:
James signed his name as James Andrew LANKFARD.
According to his death record the informant, stated his name as
 James Andrew LANKFORD.
In his obituary, surname spelled LANKFORD.

I believe that James' surname was spelled LANKFARD. Yes, there were other records with his surname LANKFORD.  I'm going by how James signed his surname on documents and how his sibling spelled the surname on the post card. And it was spelled LANKFARD.

(1874 - 1957)
James "Jim" Andrew LANKFARD
James was my Great Uncle.

Mystery: Who Could Have Been The Children In This Photo?

I was looking through some photos. I came across this one.
I was wondering. Who were the children in the photo? I've been thinking.

The man in this photo has been idenified as Frederick A. Lankfard.
He was the son of Robert and Charlotta (Dade) Lankford / Lankfard.
I don't think my Great Uncle Fred had any children. He may have step children. These children could have been his step grandchildren. Or perhaps some of his siblings' children; nephews, niece or his cousins.

I have another photo that looks like the some background. Fred appears to have on the same shirt. pants and shoes. He was wearing a hat and tie in the other photo. I'll share that photo in another blog.

This is just a thought:
I  don't know why.  I think that they could have been Fred's sister, Isabella Nickerson's children. Fred was born in 1878. Isabella's children were born between 1921 - 1938. Fred appears older in this photo. The photo could have been taken in the mid 1930's. or 1940's.

I can't recall where I go this photo. I could have gotten it from my mother. Or it was found with some photos in my Grandmother's home in 1976.

Hope someone can identify these children.

How Did My Parents Meet?

Photo of my parents in my mother's mother front room in the 1960's.
Tuesday's Treasures:

=========================================
The info below was taken from my notebook entry: October 19, 1980. I added and reworded of this entry. There were some things from my notes I didn't share. I choose to omit some.
========================================

One day, I was talking to my mother about how she met my father. "My mother told me the story of a guy that liked her. He liked her so much he asked my father to date my mother and put in some good words for him. This guy was serious.

This guy paid my father to go out with my mother. Yes! My father took the money and dated my mother...And the rest is history.

My parent went together for 2 years....My father made arrangements to get married....And they eloped in Kansas in 1937. My  father's step father, Chilton F. Lyle was a witness to the marriage. Rev Bell married my parents in his home in Kansas.
==========================================

I recall that my mother said that she met my father in her father's house. The same house that's in the picture above. My parents' parents knew each other. They didn't live to far from each other.

===========================================

I'm thankful for the parents that the Lord blessed me with.

Reflections On Researching Info On The Lankford / Lankfard Family Connections

7 of 11 Children of Robert and Charlotta (Dade) Lankford / Lankfard

I can't recall when I began my search on my Lankford / Lankfard Family Connections. I know that in my early searching, I had a hard time finding things. My journey started out with what my parents told me. I worked from there.

My mother had some photos of her parents and relatives. I had some written info. It was enough to start searching. But, I didn't know where to start.

As the years came to past, I explored more. I would ask my parents questions. I went to the library. I searched city directions. I went page by page through birth and death records. Some of the material were't indexed.

There were times during my journey, I though that I couldn't find any more than what I had at that time. I couldn't go any further. So, I had to stop searching.

While I was on break, I began to receive information. I received some photos from my cousin, Gary Lankford.  He showed up at the door one day and handed my some photos. I was so thankful that Gary share them with me.

However, I still was at a stand still. I continue to ask relatives questions on the Lankford / Lankfard family connections. I did have some leads to follow. I kept searching.

It wasn't until the past five to eight years, I began to search more on my family history. In the last five years, I have come across more on my Lankford / Lankfard side than I thought I could. I'm amazed.

In  2014, I began to see some answers to some questions. I sought to find out things. I searched for all of Robert and Charlotta's children one by one.

Their children. James, Lula,  Frederick, Louis, Leo Anna, Charles,  Still born, Nym,   Isabella and discovered that there was another Lankford child. In the long run, I did make some progress. I'm happy that I stumbled across what I found.

I searched all what I could. I found some online newspapers. I re read some of what I have discovered over the years for clues. I found some obituaries. This gave me more leads.

I have posted many blogs on my Lankford / Lankfard Family Connections.  I have more to post. There are some updates that I need to add. I still wonder. What will I find out next?

I'm hoping that I will discover more on the Lankford / Lankfard Family Connections. It's interesting what I have so far. I believe that there is more. Someone has the pieces to our family mystery. May whosoever come forth. Hoping they can add to the family history and that others would add some too.

Thoughts On What My Parents Shared With Me And Others

I love searching for my family history. I try to note things of interest while I'm searching. I've been trying to write down some things about my family history over the years.

I was looking through some of the notebooks. On Father's Day 2015, I was sharing some of my Family History notes from what my parents shared with me with two of my brothers. I discovered more about my Family Connections.

I  might share some of what my parents shared with me on this site. I've noticed that I discovered more clues on my family history through my notes and from correspondences. I wrote some things that I forgot all about. Even people shared some things with me and I forgot.

I'm thankful that I took notes and saved old letters on my family history while I was younger. I didn't realize how valuable what my parents shared or what others shared with me back then. I think, I was so interested in what they were saying. I wanted to record and saved every thing I had.

I didn't know that what  was shared with me would be more useful now. It's like things are falling into place. I can only imagine. What more will I discover on my journey through my notes? Thank God for notes taking etc...

One thing I wish, I could have done; I wished that would have taken better notes. Or even yet, asked my parents and relatives more questions. I'm thankful for my parents that God blessed me with.  And for all who contacted me through my family connections.

I hope to update some of what I recorded in my notes. Better yet,  discover more from my siblings. There are some many stories in our lives. May we learn to share and pass along to the next generation. Amen.

Thanks for reading.

Were Am I At On My Family Connections Discoveries?

Oh, yes! This has been a long journey! I've been looking back over my findings over the years. Were am I at on my family connection discoveries? I'm still on the journey. It's been a challenge. But, it's all worth it.

I will continue to search for my family history. I don't grow tired of doing so. I'm thankful that I have been stumbling across more and more as I attempt to look for anything.  At times, my search is meanly a solo journey. Thank God that there are some searchers out there searching too.

What I do, I search from the clues that I have. I get excited when I find anything that I can work with. I tend to search for anything that looks similar to my family lineage. I've been discovering that there are many people who lack info or have knowledge on what I'm coming across. It's new to them.

There have been times on my journey when I wasn't for sure if people were connected to my family tree. It's hard to confirm some of the things that I've been finding. I have to wait on other searchers or documents that I came across to verify what I think could be a connection.

Indeed, my journey will continue with whether if I have any assist or not. My aim is to find out whatever I can as long I can keep searching. Yes, it's nice to come across more family connections along the journey. It's fun to find out that there are family members trying to find out more on their family tree.

Perhaps you are reading and we have some connections.
Wouldn't that be something?
Could you like me know if we have family connections?

Clues From The Past: Part 1 ~ Mrs. Anna Laura Walters : Family Connections

Photo of unknown relatives
I came across a postcard in my Grandmother Mary (ALLEN) LANKFORD / LANKFARD home about 1976. That photo appeared to be of  a couple with their family. What is my focus about this photo? It's that, I believe, the lady behind  the couple could have been their oldest daughter. Anna Laura (Washington) Allen Walters. However, I'm not 100% that is so.

Through the years, I've been piecing together what I've discovered about my Great Grandmother Anna Laura WASHINGTON Allen WALTERS.  I've been following clues on her and her family. I hope to find more leads. This is part one of my series. Clues From The Past: Anna Laura Walters.

Hope someone finds some family connections.

New Discoveries: What To Share?

It's been a great year of exploring and discoveries on family connections. I found so much information. I'm still sorting through what I've stumbled across. I'm so thankful that the Lord allowed me to find what I did.  I believe that there is more to come.

I plan to blog on some of my discoveries in the years to come. I've been wondering what should I share? Or if I should some of the things, I know or even think about in the family history. I need wisdom on some things.

I don't know who is reading what I blog. I hope that there are some who are truly searching for their family connections. And that they are finding what they are searching for. God bless you.

I believe that there are relatives on family connections that are searching. They want to learn more. Then there are some who have a little information. But can't make the connection. They don't know where to search.

I came across a cousin, who's sibling was searching on their family lineage. This cousin stop searching because she felt unable to go any further. She couldn't find any thing. I believe God hears our heart. And that He wants those who seek to find and keep on seeking. Only if we keep seeking and seeking...

I pray that there are more relatives out there who have a desire to find more on their family connections. I pray that they don't to give up. But, to continue on searching wherever way they can. With what little info that is known, I believe in some cases, there is still hope to find something.

What we know is important to pass on to the next family historian or compiler on our family lineage. I don't know who will follow after me. I'm leaving what I have discover on websites and my personal journaling. May God bless whoever will continue the search.

I believe that there are things that we should just leave alone. Perhaps down the line it could be shared in the right timing. We need wisdom when releasing any info.

There are some things that people can't handle. They may feel embarrassed about what in the family history.  Remember, that we all are human. We have to forgive and let go of things. We make mistakes. We can learn from one another and what our ancestors did and didn't do. We can't change our family history. But, we can continue to be a blessing to the next generation.

May we learn to share what we know or heard on our family connections.
May the Lord grant us wisdom in how to share what we know.
Amen.

About that cousin who gave up searching, she knows more about her family connections now.  I believe that God does answer prayer. So if you are searching, Keep on searching... Believe that there could be a breakthrough down the road. ~ I have had so many of them. What Great Joy that is to come across. Thank You, Jesus!

This photo is of  Isabella V. (LANKFORD) NICKERSON.
Daughter of Robert and Charlotta (DADE) LANKFORD / LANKFARD

I was looking at the children in the above photo. And I thought about Isabella (LANKFORD) NICKERSON's children. Are these children of Ezekiel's and Isabella's?

On the 1930 census Ezekiel and Isabella were listed with 5 children.
All born in Colorado.

Nathan NICKERSON born about 1922
Katherine was listed as Nathian. Error on census.

Vivian NICKERSON born about 1923
Lankford NICKERSON born about 1924
Betina NICKERSON born about 1927
Robert NICKERSON born about 1928

I believe that Ezekiel and Isabella had other children after 1930. As I was searching, I came across a Bettie NICKERSON in TX with her Aunt Ruth WHITE. Ruth was listed on Ezekiel's funeral home info as next of Kin.

After farther searching, I discovered that Ruth's maiden name was what I thought. It was Nickerson. She was Ezekiel's sister.

I was searching for Betina Nickerson  on a census record. I came across Bettie NICKERSON. She was one of four NICKERSON children listed with the WHITE household in TX. All were born in Colorado. Bettie could have been Betina.

Bettie NICKERSON
Doris NICKERSON
Freddie NICKERSON
Leona NICKERSON

Isabella Nickerson passed on Sept 15, 1938. On the funeral home info it stated that the baby was in the casket with Isabella. One can assume that Isabella give birth and died afterward.

I had always thought that when I read, "child was in the casket" with Isabella, and that Isabella died after giving birth.  On December 5, 2013, I came across a death record of Freddie NICKARSON. He passed on April 9, 1941. Ruth White was the informat on the death record.

I checked to see who his parents were. E. W. Nickerson from Denver, Colorado and Elizabeth Langford from St. Joseph, Missouri.  I thought to myself and wondered. That's Ezekiel's and Isabella's son. He was born in Sept 15, 1938. So, it appears that Isabella had more than one baby before she passed on. Twins perhaps.

It appears that Ruth White cared for the four NICKERSON children after Ezekiel couldn't. Perhaps that was why the children were with Ruth and her husband in 1940. I can't locate where E.W. Nickerson was in 1940. That still leaves a question.  Why was Isabella's name listed as Elizabeth who was from St. Joseph, MO?

As for the above photo, the children could have been the NICKERSONs. The young boy does look like Isabella. The girls look like sisters.

I came across  a photo  of Freddie NICKERSON as a child. The year of Freddie birth on the 1930 census was about 1935. But on his birth record the year was 1938. I don't think that there were two Freddies.

Also, Leona the youngest child, she was listed for her year of birth as about 1939. She could have been born in 1938. I don't think  Isabella had triplets.  It could have been. Leona, Freddie were the same age on the 1940  census.

Isabella (LANKFORD) NICKERSON was the sister of Leo LANKFORD. The photo of the children were found in the home of Leo and Mary (ALLEN) LANKFORD./ LANKFARD.

Family Mysteries are fun. I'm not for sure who the children were in the photo. But the description matches the NICKERSONs. How knows? It could be someone else children. They all look like siblings. But who's? Could they have been Ruth (NICKERSON) WHITE's children?

What about the connections between the 1930 and 1940 census? It give clues to who some of the NICKERSONs where about. I discovered that Nathan NICKERSON passed on in 2007 in Oregon . According to his obituary, he had a sister name Doris. And brother named Robert NICKERSON. Nathan Nickerson was born in Colorado.

I don't know any additional info on the E.W. and Isabella NICKERSON's Children. I'm hoping that some of the NICKERSON descendants will come across this blog. I have come across photos of Nathan NICKERSON and one I believe was of Vivian NICKERSON.  Nathan looked like his father.

Searching For Descendants Of Sarah "Sallie" Bartlett - Wade H. Peyton Sr

I've been searching for the where a bouts of The Bartlett - Peyton Family.  I've been piecing some of the story on the family. I started searching for a Peyton with the first name of Sallie. I came across a Sallie Peyton on the Kansas State census in 1885.

Through the years, I have compiled some info on the Peyton Family. Here's some of what I  have discovered. Wade Hampton Peyton Sr. married Sarah "Sallie" Bartlett. They had a son named Wade H. Peyton Jr. and a daughter, Myrtle Peyton.

Through research, I've discovered that Myrtle Peyton was living with her grandmother, Harriett  Bartlett in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1900. We can presume that Myrtle's parents passed on when she was a child. Myrtle was born in Topeka, Kansas about Dec of 1886.

Miss Myrtle Peyton married William Younger in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1903. They have two daughters, Gaynelle and Udlene Younger. Myrtle and William later divorce. Myrtle moves to Cuyahoga County, Ohio. where she later marries Earl C. Miller. Myrtle's last where a bout was in  Chicago, Cook, Illinois in the 1940's. I came across a record with her surname of Younger.

As for Wade Hampton Peyton Jr., I couldn't find him on the 1900 census.  I first came across him on the 1885 Kansas census. Then I located  his WW I draft card. He was living in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa in 1917 - 1918. His sister, Myrtle Younger was listed as his next of kin on his WW I draft card.

I recently came across a new found discover on Wade Jr. He was married to a Anna L. Wynne in MO. As I searched and found more on Wade Peyton Jr. through the city directories, he lived in at least 3 States. He was in Nebraska, Iowa and later in Tennessee. In Nebraska he was first listed as a student. According to his WW I draft card, he worked as a waiter at Black Stone Hotel in Omaha, Nebraska.

I've come across a newspaper article on Wade H. Peyton and his late wife, Anna who passed on in 1910. I'm trying to piece together when Wade and Anna moved to Nebraska. And when Wade moved to Tennessee.

According to Wade Peyton Jr's death record and tombstone, he was a doctor. I haven't located records on what type of doctor he was. Wade Jr.  married his second wife Katherine A / "Katie" Robinson  Peyton. They had a son named Wade H. Peyton III. And a daughter named Thomas Sarah Peyton.

I  discovered that Wade H. Peyton Jr. was in Lincoln, Nebraska from about 1907 to 1914 and 1928. He was listed as a waiter, a student and later a physician.  He was listed in Nashville, Tennessee in 1920, 1922 and 1929 and in Athens, Limestone, Alabama on the 1930 and 1940 censuses.

At the time of Wade Peyton Jr's death record, he was living in Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee. He was a widow. (His wife, Katherine passed on in 1954.) Their children, Wade Peyton, the III passed on in  Alameda, California in 1985. Thomas Sarah Anderson passed on in  Westmoreland, Sumner, Tennessee in 2013.

I hope and pray that some of The Bartlett - Peyton Family Connections will come across this blog. It's interesting to find more on family history. Hope to discover more.

May we not give up on searching for our family history.

Searching For Family Connections: The Sarah "Sallie" Bartlett - Peyton Family

I've been searching for info on a Sallie BARTLETT for years. All I knew about her was that she was the daughter of Elias BARTLETT. She was born about 1866 in Missouri. Her mother's first name may have been Rachel.

Over the years, I have had trouble finding leads on Sallie. I tried piecing what I knew together. But,  I thought I wouldn't find any more on her. So, I begin to search from what I knew on the Bartlett's.

At some point in my search, I came across a (mulatto)  child named Myrtle PEYTON. She was the granddaughter of Harriet (HOOPER) BARTLETT. Myrtle was born about 1886 in Kansas. I figured that one of Harriet's daughter married a PEYTON. And I worked from there.

I first came across Myrtle on the 1900 census with the Bartlett family. Later, I discovered that Myrtle at age 17, married a William YOUNGER in Buchanan County in Missouri. Also there was a Lucile Mossell who was a witness to their marriage.  Lucile "Lucy" was Myrtle's aunt through the Bartlett connections.

I kept trying to locate a Myrtle Peyton. Which daughter of Harriet's could have been Myrtle's mother? I narrowed it down to two. Lucy or Sallie. I search for both. I kept coming up hitting brick walls. I still couldn't connect.  I took a break from searching for Myrtle.

Somehow, I kept looking for other Bartletts and Peytons. I came across a Wade Hampton PEYTON with his parents. His mother's name was Sallie. Wade was named after his father. I kept searching for Sallie and Wade.

As I kept searching, I came across Wade Jr's WWII draft card. I didn't know what I would find out.  But low and behold.... The next of kin on  his record was Myrtle Younger. Yes, that was his sister. Then this lead my search for Sallie.... I discovered that her name was Sarah.

I later made discoveries on the PEYTON Family Connections.  Oh what great joy that was!  I continue to search for the PEYTON Family. It was interesting to have found out that Myrtle's brother , Wade Hampton Peyton Jr. was a doctor.

As for Myrtle, she and William had two daughters. Myrtle later divorced William. She later married  Earl C. MILLER. On Myrtle's marriage licence to Earl, it stated that Myrtle's  mother, Sarah's maiden name was Shaw.  Now, that got me to thinking. Who was Sarah's mother?

The Search Continues... See Any Connections?

I'm hoping to find more on the BARTLETT- PEYTON Family Connections. I believe that there are descendants out there. Myrtle's daughter's married names were Taylor and Duke. I hope that someone will have more info. Perhaps that someone is you.

May the Lord grant the hunger in people to search for their ancestors. May there be leads to follow. May the beauty of the Lord brings surprises along the journey. Amen!

Family Connections: The Sarah "Sallie" Bartlett - Peyton Family: One final note:Oral history: I recall my parents say that one of Jennie (Bartlett) Blakley Lyle's sister married a doctor.
I haven't found info on that sister.
Who was Jennie? She was the sister of Sallie and Lucy.
