Dade Family Connections: So Many Descendants

In the beginning, I didn’t know that “Uncle Isaac” a.k.a. Isaac Dade Sr. and “Aunt Frankie”a.k.a. Frances (Ovington) Dade were my second great grandparents. Their daughter Charlotta Lottie (Dade) Lankford / Lankfard was my great grandmother. Since my early discoveries, I continue to search for my Dade Family Connections.

Photo is of my Great Grandparents (Robert Louis) Lewis Lankford’s and Miss Charlotta Dade’s marriage certificate: Dated January 23rd, 1873 in Canton, Lewis County Missouri. The two witnesses to their marriage were Isaac Dade and Francis Dade. I began to search to see who were Isaac Dade and Francis. I have located them on the Missouri censuses. (NOTE: the index on record states the date of marriage was on Jan 25 nd, 1873.)

On the United States Federal 1900 census for Lewis County; Canton, Missouri, it states that Frances Dade had 14 children in which 7 were living at the time of the census on June 11th. I have located 7 of Frances’ 14 children. I pieced the puzzle together as I found more information on each child.

I have been compiling a list of the descendants of Isaac and Frances:
Here is a list of the 7 known children.

Louisa Jane “Aunt Janie” (DADE) WASHINGTON, the of mother of 13
Benjamin “Ben” DADE, the of father of 15
Mary Ann (DADE) MADISON, the of mother of 7
Isaac DADE a.k.a. Private Isaac DAYD, the of father of 5
Louis Newton “Old Bone” DADE, the of father of 11
Crieldy / Cyrilda (DADE) GREEN, the of mother of 2
Charlotta Lottie (DADE) LANKFORD / LANKFARD, the of mother of 11

Which sibling has the most descendants, so far?
I thought Louisa Jane (DADE) WASHINGTON had a lot of descendants. I was wrong. When I came across Benjamin “Ben” DADE, I wasn’t for sure if he was related. However, I received confirmation that he was through France’s death notice and through DNA matches with his descendants. I began to add Ben’s lineage to the family tree. I thought I couldn’t keep up with the list.

I had to challenge myself to compile Benjamin “Ben” Dade’s lineage on a calendar by sorting by names to their birth dates and death dates. I have done this with my other family connections branches. I use a big calendar and combined my Blakey Blakley WHITE family on one calendar and my Bartlett Family on another one and so one.

However, when I came to Benjamin’s lineage, I had to rethink how to do his. He has so many descendants. His lineage won’t fit with my other DADE Family calendar that includes Louisa, Louis, Mary, and Charlotta. There wasn’t enough space.

I had to started two other DADE Family calendars one for Isaac DADE Jr. / Isaac DAYD and the other for Benjamin DADE. The other two children of Frances: Isaac DADE Jr / DAYD and Crieidy / Cyrida Dade Green are on the same calendar.

A Surprising Discovery:
I noticed that some of the Benjamin’s descendants married into Louisa DADE Washington’s descendants. This was a surprise to come across. I thought to myself, I saw this name before. I’m in the process of searching more on Ben DADE.

Story has it that Ben Dade lived in Texas. He had a first wife. I’m exploring what one of Ben Dade’s descendant shared with me.

In Memory of Mrs. Frances "Frankie" Ovington DADE: The Strength Of “Aunt Frankie”

The Strength Of “Aunt Frankie” Frances Dade

“Aunt Frankie” also known as, Mrs. Frances (Ovington) Dade, was born into slavery in Dec of 1799 or Dec 1810 in Kentucky. She was the wife of Isaac Dade Sr. According to the 1900 Missouri census, Frances was recorded as having 14 children and seven were living at that time of the census day of 9 June 11 , 1900. in Canton township in Lewis County Missouri.

As I’ve been discovering a few things about my 2nd Great Grandmother, Frances, I can see that she was a strong woman. She had strength to continue on with her life as being a captive in Kentucky. She was moved to Missouri with own slave owners.

Frances lived through her life as the enslaved more than half her life and was able to experience her freedom from bondage. She had the strength to live and see the death of 7 of her children, her husband and her loved ones. What endurance hardship, pain and struggles in her lifetime.

Frances was well known by the older residents in Lewis County Missouri area.
The Kentucky emigrants of that county knew her.
.
She was the mother of some well known citizens in Canton, Missouri.
Below are the names of the known children of Isaac Dade Sr. and Frances Dade.
I have DNA matches with their descendants: the names with the * in front of it.

*Louisa Jane “Aunt Janie” (Dade) Washington
(1826 – 1910 )

*Benjamin “Ben” Dade
(1826 – 1906)

Searching Records: Seeking For Some Clues

I'm still on the journey. I've been searching through  census records. I'm trying to locate where some of my ancestors lived. I hope to find some new clues to follow up on.

Here's a blog I posted on another site. The idea come from Genealogy Café via facebook

 ~ Beginning

I began my search in 2021 thinking about Francis (Ovington) Dade and her children. Francis was my 2nd Great Grandmother. She was listed as having 14 children on the 1900 Missouri Census in which seven were living at that time. I was wondering, who was that 7th child? And who were the other seven?

Over the years, I’ve been searching for every DADE in the Lewis County Missouri. I’ve been compiling information. I have come across seven of Francis’ children. Isaac Dade was the husband of Francis.

First on my list is my Great Grandmother, Charlotta Dade Lankford / Lankfard. It was on July 31, 2008 when I received Charlotta’s death record. Her parents Isaac and Francis were listed as witnesses to Charlotta’s and her husband Lewis / Robert Lankford’s marriage in 1873.

I discovered other children of Isaac and Francis; Louis Dade and Mary Ann Madison through their death records. On May 8, 2010, a searcher help me discover that Louisa Washington was a DADE. This was another breakthrough.

It was through news paper articles, city directories, and Find A Grave when I discovered the connections between Ben Dade, Criedly Green and Isaac Dayd . This came last year and within the past few years with verification. I have DNA matches * with some of Francis’ descendants.

Benjamin “Ben” Dade *

(1826 – 1906)

Louisa Jane “Janie” (Dade) Washington *
Mrs. David Washington Sr.
1826 – 1920)

Mary Ann (Dade) Madison
Mrs. George Madison
(1836 – 1921)

Isaac N. DAYD *
(1844 – 1907)

Louis Newton Dade *
( 1837 – 1947)

Criedly (Dade) Green
Mrs. Samuel Green
(1851- 1884)

Charlotta / Charlotte Dade Lankford / Lankfard *
Mrs. Robert Louis Lankford /Lankfard
(1854- 1924)

Now, my journey is set to for 2021. I’ve been updating info on the known Dade children. I have the listed below of the ones I hope to discover more on. They lived in Lewis County Missouri area.

George Dade
There were two of them. Which one?
Bery Dade who was born about 1838.
He lived near David and Janie (Dade) Washington on the 1870 Missouri census.
Francis (Dade) Williams who was born about 1851.
She was wife of John Williams. They married on Nov 28, 1871 in Lewis County Missouri.

Another Frances OVINGTON DADE Connection

On May 8th 2010, I logged in to ancestry.com. I came across someone who has a connection with Frances Ovington Dade. This person is from Janie Jane DADE WASHINGTON lineage.

I checked the Missouri death records between 1910-1959 for a Jane WASHINGTON. I came up with a Louisa Jane WASHINGTON. According to an Isaac and John WASHINGTON, Louisa was born in March of 1817 in KY.

Louisa Jane WASHINGTON's parents were an Isaac DADE from VA and a Frances unknown surname from KY. I saw the connection when I read the parents name. Another Frances OVINGTON DADE Connection.

However the year of Louisa's birth was a question. Isaac Dade was born around 1808. Frances or Frankie birth year was a question. Frances birth year between Dec 1799 to 1812. Most likely she was born about 1810 in KY.

Frances / Frankie OVINGTON DADE had 14 children.
So far I have come across...
On Frances' 4 known children's death records: The parents' names were Isaac DADE and Frances / Frankie. Charlotta's death record was the only one that mentioned Frances' maiden name as OVINGTON.

1
Louisa Jane Janie DADE WASHINGTON

She was married to David WASHINGTON.
and the mother of 13.

2

An Isaac married a Lue / Louisa ?
and Louisa was the mother of 6.

There were 10 other children unaccounted for.
Seven were living when the 1900 census was taken.
Frances OVINGTON DADE was listed as 101 on the 1900 MO census.

The Frances Ovington Dade Connection

I've been thinking about some of the family history information that I have found. What can I say about my mother's father's mother's mother, Frances Ovington Dade? After gathering information on her, I think that I can write some things about her.

I came across Frances Dade's name on my Great Grandparents' Charlotta Dade and Lewis ( Robert) Lankford's marriage record dated on Jan 23, 1873. I assume that Frances was my Great Grandma Charlotta's relative. But which one?

It was on July 31, 2008, that the mystery was solved. Who was Frances? Frances was Charlotta's mother. I found that information on Charlotta's death record. That gave me leads to search more.

I've already seen Frances' name on census records. So, I knew where to look. Frances was married to an Isaac Dade. By the way, Isaac's name was on Charlotta's marriage and death records too.

After rechecking census records, I made some new discoveries. I don't know much about Frances' husband Isaac. He was born about 1808 in VA. He was a laborer. He died between 1880 and 1900. His parents were from VA.

On census records Frances, a.k.a Frankie was listed as keeping house. She was listed on the 1900 census as being born in Dec of 1799. Then on the other census records her year of birth was between 1810 to 1813. She and her parents were from in KY.

According to the 1900 census Frances was a widow. She had 14 children. Seven of her children were still living in 1900. I've been trying to figure out who were Francis' children.

I came up with 4 of Frances' children:
1. Mary Ann Dade Madison (1836 - 1921)
2. Louis Newton Dade (1847 - 1937)
3. Isaac Dade (1850 - ca 1880)
4. Charlotta Dade Lankford (1852 -1924)

Where was the connection with Mary Ann Dade Madison?
She was listed with her on the 1900 census as daughter.
She and Isaac listed on Mary's death record.

Where was the connections with Louis Dade?
He was listed with her and Isaac on the 1870 census as son.
He lived near her and Isaac on the 1880 census.
She and Isaac listed on Louis' death record.

Where was the connection with Isaac Dade?
I believe he was one of Frances' son.
Out of 14 children I think that there was an Isaac Jr.
I think there could have been a Francis too.

As for Charlotta Dade Lankford's connection?
Frances was listed on Charlotta's death record.
Frances was listed on Charlotta's marriage record.

I can assume other Dades in Lewis County could have been related.
There was a Francis Dade married on Nov 18, 1871 who married John Williams.
There was Lewis Dade born about 1813 in VA. Parents from VA.

Discoveries While On The Journey
The Frances Ovington Dade Connection

My 2nd Great Grandma Frances
I found a lot about her as I did some re reading.
I think most likely Frances was born into slavery.
She was listed as black on the census records.
She lived to see her freedom from slavery.

So who was Frances Dade Ovington?
She was the mother of Charlotta Dade Lankford.
Charlotta was the mother of Leo Lankford Sr.
Leo was the father of Lula Lankford Blakley
Lula was my mother.

Blessings,
Susan
