Mrs. “Lottie” (Dade) Langford Was One Of The Best

According to a news article published in The Canton Press Canton, Missouri on Friday, April 18, 1924 on page 3, mentioned the death of Mrs. Charlottie Lankford; Lottie Dade as she was better known to the many of our older citizens was one of the best colored women who ever went out of Canton.” The article didn’t say why Lottie was so well known.

I can’t imagine how well known Lottie Dade must have been during her time. She was born in January of 1854 in Missouri. She was one of the formerly enslaved along with her siblings and parents Isaac Dade Sr. (1805 – 1890) and Frances “Frankie: Dade a.k.a. “Aunt Frankie” ( 1810 – 1901). The family was well known and lived in Lewis County Missouri area.

I can only imagine that Lottie gave of herself in whatever she did in her lifetime. Perhaps in your early years, she was a house servant while in her enslaved years. This could have been where she learned and developed her skills in life.

According to the 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses, the censuses takers recorded her occupation as keeps house, (left blank), (None) and as a laundress at home. She must to have some skill and ability that left an impact on the older citizens of Canton, Missouri.

I wondered. What gift or ability did Lottie have? According to one of my cousins, she shared with me that Charlotta was a seamstress. I wondered if Lottie designed her own clothes?

As I look at the rare photos of Lottie, I can see that she was a stylish women and a well kept one at that. There are few photos of Mrs. Charlotta Lottie. The year of photos are unknown.

Oh, the style that she has on. She was a classy lady.

Charlotta / Lottie was one of 14. She was the mother of 11. Her husband Robert was a proprietor at the Lankfard’ Cafe, a restaurant ca 1911 – 1913 in St. Joseph, Missouri. I was wondering if Charlotta helped with the cooking.

I couldn’t find much about Charlotta (Dade) Lanford in the news papers. Her death certificate records her name as Charlottie Lankfard and obituary as Charlotta Lankford. But Lottie was the name that’s rarely recorded. Charlottie Langford was mentioned when her father Isaac Dade Sr. passed in 1890.

As I mentioned, Lottie came from a talented and well known family in the Lewis County Missouri area.
Here are a list of a few siblings:

Ben Dade: When his mother Frances passed in 1901, Ben’s name was mentioned.
He was a farmer and owned his home. He made out a will. There was a bridge that carried his name. The Ben Dade Bridge

Louisa Janie Dade Washington:
Mrs. David Washington Sr.
She was described as a highly respect colored woman. They called her Aunt Jane…was ever considered most honest industrious good Christian woman. She was good and faithful.

Louis Newton Dade: They called him Uncle Lew
During pre Civil War Days he was a house servant while enslaved; Louis was a curvier of bones, shell work made paper knives, spoons and napkin rings. He got the nickname, Old Bone Dade. In 1910, he owned his home without mortgage. He was a business man, a novelty worker.

Isaac Dade Jr. aka Private Isaac Dayd, veteran
He was a musician that played a violin. He served during the Civil War.

Who was Lottie?
Her birth name was Charlotta Dade. She became a freewoman at the age of 11 in 1865. And at age 19 Lottie Dade a.k.a. Miss Charlotta Dade married Mr. Lewis Lankford on January 25, 1873 in Canton, Missouri. Her parents Isaac Dade and Francis Dade were witnessed the marriage.

The Lankford family moved from Canton, Missouri around 1887. They may have lived in Kansas City Missouri. However, they ended up in St. Joseph, Missouri in 1888.

In 1924, while Lottie was visiting her son Frederick Lankford in New York, she suddenly died. Her body was brought back to St. Joseph, Missouri. She was laid to rest next to her husband Robert.

Lottie was my mother Lula’s grandmother.

Family Fashion #52Ancestors Week 29

I was looking through old photos and thinking about fashion in the family.

I noticed that some of my relatives would be dressed.
I think dressing up for photos was a family tradition back in the days.

I was admiring the few photos that I have of my Great Grandmother Charlotta “Lottie” (Dade) Lankfard (1854 – 1924). She was the daughter of Isaac Dade (1805- 1890) and Francis “Frankie” ( Ovington ) (1810- 1901) Dade. Charlotta and her parents were the enslaved and lived to received their freedom.

Oral history states that Charlotta was a streamstress. I could imagine that she preparing to design her own clothe from material she had to work with. I noticed in this oval photo of her, she had was wearing a belt. And her waist was thin. The designs and patterns combination is beautiful.

In another photo of Charlotta , she is dress with fashionable designed clothing.
The photo was colorized etc. by a tool from My Heritage.

A picture can speak a thousand words.
I can only imagine what she was writing in that book.

Our ancestors had a fashion style of their own. They wore what the had.
I’m thankful for old photos that made it through the test of time.
Each photo is a treasure and there is a story behind each one of them.

May we share some of our photos with others.
May we preserve our photos for future generations.
Amen!

Thanks for reading.

Week 29: Fashion ~ Generations Café via facebook

It’s fun to look at old photos and think, “How did they wear that?!” Corsets, bustles, wool suits, and ridiculously large hats seem so impractical (not to mention heavy!) Any fashion mavens in your family tree? What about an ancestor who had their own sense of style or someone associated with the fashion industry? Feel free to post your links and stories in the comments.

In Memory of My Great Grandma Charlotta ~ Week 2 ~ The prompts "Favorite Photo #25ancestors 52 Weeks

I choose this photo of my Great Grandmother,
Charlotta "Lottie" Charlottie (DADE) LANKFORD / LANKFARD.
I have many favorite photos. There are some that I've written about.
This is one of them. But, I've added more to the story.
Mrs. Robert Louis Lankford / Lankfard
(1854- 1924)
I don't know where this photo was taken. However, it's a postcard. There's nothing written on the back of it. I was told this was a picture of my Grandmother, Charlotta "Lottie" Charlottie DADE LANKFORD / LANKFARD.

I can't recall when I learned about this postcard. I know that it came from my Grandmother, Mary (Allen) Lankford / Lankfard's home around 1976. The Lankford / Lankfard home was being cleaned out and later torn down.

I love this photo. There's so much there that tells a story. As I look at what my Great Grandmother was wearing, it's nice clothing. I was told that Charlotta was a seamstress. The census records states that she kept house and was a laundress.

I've seen two other photos of Charlotta. She looked like a well kept woman. She dressed well. I could only imagine where she bought her clothes. Or if she design them herself.

Also, I noticed in the above photo, that Charlotta is posing in a way to tell a story. She has a book in her hand. There's another photo of Charlotta holding something. But, in this photo, she also has reading glasses and wearing her ring. It appears that she had a watch or jewelry on her left side. There a broach near her neck.

Who was Charlotta Lankford / Lankfard ?
Charlotta was the daughter of Isaac DADE and Frances "Frankie" (OVINGTON) DADE. Charlotta was of 14 children. Charlotta was the wife of Robert Louis Lankford / Lankfard. Robert was a Contractor and a builder. They had 11 children

Robert and Charlotta had three well known sons in their time. One son, Frederick A. Lankfard was a musician who traveled the country in a professional banjo group. Another son, Louis A. Lankfard, a.k.a. Add Langford, played in the Negro League Baseball. Another son, Nym Lankfard was a porter  etc. and was married an entertainer by the name of Hattie McDaniel.

Other Lankford / Lankfard sons, were James A. Lankfard was as a mason, construction and a teamster, Leo Lankfard was in trucking and hauling, Charles E. Lankfard was a labor. And daughters, Lula Madison, a housewife, Anna Alice Smith was a seamstress, and Isabella Nickerson was a housewife.

Mrs. Charlotta "Lottie" Lankford / Lankfard.

Burial at Ashland Cemetery in St. Joseph, Missouri
Charlotta lived to be 70 years old. She was living in New York City for about eight months before she passed on April 3, 1924. Her body was brought back to St. Joseph, Missouri  to be buried next to her husband.

I found parts of her obituary in the St. Joseph, Missouri newspaper. It was in the classified adverting section. In the Funeral Notices. It isn't readable. There were bits and pieces that can be made out. Her body came in the route of St. Paul MN. The funeral was at the A.M.C. on 18th Street.

I believe that the Lankfords / Lankfards posed for photos. They used postcard. Sadly to say most of ones that I've come across had nothing written on them. I know where 3 of the photos of Charlotta Lankfard are located. The are treasured photos.

Thanks for reading.
God bless you.

Tracing The Lankford / Lankfard Surname

I'm working on some blogs on the Lankford / Lankfard Family Connections. I'm comparing how each family member in the Robert and Charlotta (Dade) Lankford / Lankfard branch spelled their family surname. The first time I was aware of the different spellings, was on tombstones.

Tombstone in Ashland Cemetery, St. Joseph, Missouri.

Tombstones in Ashland Cemetery, St. Joseph, Missouri
Over the years, I review on some documents on my Robert and Charlotta (DADE) LANKFORD / LANKFARD family. Recently, I was reviewing some new info. And I come up with this conclusion.  I believe at one point, the family began to spell their surname LANKFARD.

I don't know if the LANKFARD family choose this surname. Or if they discovered that the family spelt it that way. The first recording of surname the LANKFARD spelling, that I have come across, was in the St. Joseph, Missouri City Directory in 1898.  The first document with the LANKFORD spelling was on Lewis LANKFORD and Miss Charlotta DADE's marriage license in 1873.

I have found some documents on the surname spelling. I had been searching records on how some of the Lankfard siblings signed their surnames. There are documents from marriage licenses, U.S. WW I Draft Registration: 1917 - 1918, WW II Draft Registrations: 1942, Post Cards, 1908 / 1910.

There were other records: the City directories: 1880's - 1900's, Tombstones, Newspaper Advertisements, some censuses and the U.S. Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007. The surname was spelled LANKFARD in most cases.

Here are some of the blogs that I'm working on.
Tracing The LANKFARD surnames through the Siblings
James Andrew LANKFARD
Frederick A. LANKFARD
Isabella (LANKFORD/ LANKFARD) NICKERSON
Lula Mae Russell (LANKFARD) MADISON
Anna Alice (LANKFARD) SMITH
Charles Edward LANKFARD
Nymadula LANKFARD
Louis Adward LANKFARD
Leo LANKFORD /  LANKFARD

I honor both spelling. My linage spelling is LANKFORD. But, I believe most of the earlier family spell their surname LANKFARD. Somehow the LANKFORD spelling stood out.

Thanks for reading.

As clear as a loving word or touch

of a hand so warm and clear

Are the memories of our loved ones that

we treasure and hold near.

A favorite song or picture often causes

us to recall, the many special times

that were the dearest ones of all.

The Mystery of Isaac Lankfard Jr.

The informant, Isaac Lankfard Jr was the name on Charlottie Lankfard's death record,
Isaac Jr. was recorded as Charlottie's son. Who was Isaac Lankford Jr.?

I believe that this was the error on the undertakers behalf.
I think, that this Isaac was Louis Lankford. Louis' father went by Louis Lankford in his early days.
Louis was the middle name of  his father Robert LOUIS Lankford. Some how the name  Isaac was mentioned. Charlotta's father was Isaac.   Charlottie's  address on her death record was 160 W. 142nd St. Apt 5 Louis "Add" Lankford lived at 160 West 142nd from about 1920 - 1925.

The LANKFORD Surname

On the Lankford brothers' World War 1 and 2 Draft Reg Cards
Most of the spelling of the LANKFORD name was spelled or signed as LANKFARD.

On LANKFORD Marriage Records for Frederick, Lula and Alice...
Their surname was spelled LANKFARD.

The descendants of Robert Lewis LANKFARD Sr., son of Leo and Mary
(ALLEN) LANKFORD / LANKFARD spell their surname LANKFARD.

Tombstones at Ashland Cemetery in St. Joseph, Missouri

Robert Louis' and Charlotta's surname on grave marker spelled LANKFARD.
This is just a thought. It could have been the person who made the arrangement for the tombstone for the spelling of the surname. The brothers in New York, spelled their surname LANKFARD.

Leo's and Mary's surname on grave markers spelled LANKFARD

~ Which was it Lankford? Or Lankfard?  ~
We don't know the story behind the surname spelling.
But, I think that there was something to do with it.

Some of my thoughts.
It could have been that the family wanted to spell the surname the same on the tombstones.
I don't think it was a mistake in doing.

Here's how the surname was recorded in the Iowa State Bystander on May 19, 1911.

Three of The LANKFORD Brothers lived in New York
beginning around the late teens, 1920's - 1930s and until their death

Louis "Add" Lankfard, Frederick "Fred" Lankfard and Nymadula "Nym" Lankfard.
Brother, Charles Lankford came to New York don't know the year.
The brothers followed each other as they were on the R.R.
Note that Charles returned to Kansas City Missouri.

This is the only known photo of the brothers.
The years when this photo was taken is unknown.

The year of photo is  a question.
This could be the photo when their father and or mother, passed 1919 and 1924.
My mother said that there was a picture taken of the brothers
about the time of their mother's passing.

The Other LANKFORD Siblings
in St. Joseph, Missouri and Denver, Colorado

Brothers, Leo Lankford and "Jim" James Lankford stayed in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Along with sister, Lula Mae Madison.
Sister, Anna Alice Smith lived in Denver and Kansas City, Missouri.
She moved back to St. Joseph, after her husband passed in January of 1948.

Isabella V. Nickerson and her family were the only ones who stayed
in Denver, Colorado.
It wasn't until late 2014 when I made some connections with a descendant of Isabella. They were searching for Isabella's family connections also. They couldn't make the connections.
I'm so thankful that I came across some of Isabella's descendants.
