Mr. Add “Smoke” Langford: Professional Baseball Player

Since his early career while in his teens, he was know as Ad “Add Langford”. I’m not for sure how he earned the nickname “Smoke”. Either he was fast in his pitching and or both fast in his running. Add Langford was a member of the Negro Baseball League: as an armature / professional from about 1900 – 1920’s.

In his early years, “Add” played right fieldershort stop and third base and pitcher for the Black Wonders: The Brownies. This team was out of St. Joseph, Missouri. By 1908, ” Add” made his way to, Utah where he was playing with the Occidentals. And before 1920, he was managing / and pitching with the Pennsylvania Red Caps.

Who was “Add Langford”?

“Add” was born Louis Adward Lankford on January 27, 1882 in Canton, Lewis County in Missouri. He was the son of Robert Louis Lankford / Lankfard (1852 – 1919) and Charlotta (Dade) Lankford / Lankfard. (1854 – 1924). He was one of 11 children.

Why did Louis used his nickname “Add” and the LANGFORD spelling as an athletic ?
It’s a mystery. Louis spelled his nickname Add. At time the news media spelled the name Ad.

Crop photo is of Add Langford with his Occidental teammates.
The location and year of photo is unknown.

News article from The Salt Lake Tribune Salt Lake City, Utah 07 May 1908, Thu  •  Page 10

Add was a member of at least 12 baseball teams in his career. His starting baseball years was before in 1912. He was playing with the Oxies in 1908.

News article from the Salt Lake Telegram Salt Lake City, Utah 08 Jun 1908, Mon  •  Page 7

I was wondering, when did Add joined a baseball team? He had been connected to a team around 1900.
I searched and discovered that Add also was a boxing in St. Joseph. It appears that he loved sports in his early years. I discovered that there was a ball field not to far from the Lankford’s were living in 1894 at 2411 Messanie Street. According to the newspaper at this time, there was a ball field was at 25th and Messanie Streets.

Add also had the love for boxing. He had some boxing matches in St. Joseph, and some else where. He had one professional match in 1911.

Week 12 ~ Amy Johnson Crow #52Ancestors In 52 Weeks Challenge

The theme for Week 12 is “Membership.” It isn’t unusual to find our ancestors as members of a group, such as churches, school alumni, veterans organizations, or fraternal societies. Have you found an ancestor who was as member of a group? Or maybe you’ve made a discovery by being a member of a genealogical or historical society. Write about it this week!

Work #52Ancestors Week 36

What did our ancestors and relative do for a living?

This is a good question and something to search out.

I was thinking about some of my relatives.
I came across many professions. Here’s a short list.
farmers, musicians, athletes, porters, stone masons, chefs, cosmetologists, barbers,
medical field, military service, truckers, mechanics, janitors, teamsters, contractors, haulers, and the list goes on.

I was thinking about my Great Uncle “Add” Lankfard.
He was the brother of my Grandfather, Leo.

Louis Adward Lankford was born on Jan 22, 1882 in Canton, Missouri. He was the son of Robert and Charlotta Dade Lankford / Lankfard. He was one of 11 children.

Louis worked many jobs in his lifetime. He was a laborer, porter, attendant at R.R. Station. Porter at an apartment house. And a supernatant at an apartment house. Some time during Louis’ upbringing he enjoyed playing baseball. .

Louis loved the game so well he made it a career. His name wasn’t Louis Lankford during that time. He went by Add Langford in the negro league. He was an outfielder, and as a pitcher, his nickname was “Smoke”.

And Lankfard in Lula Madison's obituary in 1961.

As I began searching for info on Louis, it was a task in doing.
I didn't know that he went by two names.
In St. Joseph, MO, he was Louis Lankford and Louis A. Lankfard.
There were times he went by Add Lankford.
Add and Addie appears to have been  his nicknames.

When he became a professional baseball player his name was Add Langford.

Tracing The LANKFORD / LANKFARD Family Surname: Through James

Was his name, James Andrew Lankford?
James Andrew LANKFARD? Or both?

James was the son of Robert and Charlotta (DADE) LANKFORD / LANKFARD.
He was their first born son, on October 26, 1874, in Monticello, Missouri.
His year of birth could have been in 1873.

According to city directories, his surname varied from
 Lankford, Langford and Lankfard.
He was first listed on the 1894 city directory with the LANGFORD surname.
and 1894 - 1897 with the surname LANKFORD.
In 1898 he was listed with both the LANKFARD and LANKFORD surname.

James on the census records:
1880: Wasn't listed
1900 LANKFARD
1910 LANGFORD
1920 LANGFORD
1930 LANKFARD
1940 LANKFORD

According to the U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007
His name was James Andrew LANKFARD in the year 1943.
So which surname was the one for James?
Here's an excellent example.
I noted it when I first read it. You should too.

This post card written on Feb 1, 1910. It was addressed to Mrs. Sallie J. LANKFARD.
The sender was Louis "Add" LANKFARD, Sallie's brother in law.
Subject was on Sam LANGFORD, the boxer.

I haven't found any Lankfard family connections with Sam Langford.

According to the WWI draft registration signature:
James signed his name as James Andrew LANKFARD.
According to his death record the informant, stated his name as
 James Andrew LANKFORD.
In his obituary, surname spelled LANKFORD.

I believe that James' surname was spelled LANKFARD. Yes, there were other records with his surname LANKFORD.  I'm going by how James signed his surname on documents and how his sibling spelled the surname on the post card. And it was spelled LANKFARD.

(1874 - 1957)
James "Jim" Andrew LANKFARD
James was my Great Uncle.
