Repost " A Part Of The Family " A.P. (And Other Dogs)

This is a repost of dogs in the family. It's been 13 years since A. P. died.
He was a good dog, along with his offspring.

Saturday, 02 December 2006 :A Part Of The Family " A.P.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A.P. Dec 7, 1991 - Dec 2, 2006
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is an update on A.P., My sister's almost 15 year old dog. I got the word that A.P. had to be put to sleep this morning.

He had been suffering with arthritis with his back legs. The doctor thought that A.P. could have had a stroke or had a tumor. It was best to put him to sleep. A.P. was a outside dog. He was not able to get around.

What I can tell you about A.P. He was part shepherd and Lab. He lived a HAPPY life. He lived across the street from us. A.P. was born on Dec 7, 1991. [A.P. was the football player dog.... Double D's.]

His Ma was taking care of A.P... Double D was the one that gave A.P. this name. A.P. does not stand for Associated Press.

A.P. was named after a basketball player in MO, who later made it to the NBA. Some how back in '91 this Anthony was big time then. Some how the letters A.P. came to be this dog's name.

A.P. grew up with four "cousin" dogs, "Luke", "Duke", "Messy Marvin", and "Little Bit". "M. Marvin" looked just like A.P. They got along pretty good together.

You could have thought that "M. Marvin" was his daddy. A.P." cousin dogs" taught him well throughout out his young dog life. One by one A.P. cousins dogs died. A.P. was left alone.

A.P. did not get along with other dogs. He would always get into fights. When a new dog came to keep A.P. company, A.P. would not like them. There was one dog A.P. liked. She was the "neighbor dog".

I called her "Rover". She would come over to A.P. place and they would play. Her real name was "Gidget." Gidget would climb the fence to get in. Then there were days that I did not see "Gidget".

I asked my neighbor were she was..."Gidget had to be put to sleep. She was 15. That was about 6 or 7 years ago.

Then A.P. did not have any "dog friends". So my sister got another dog to keep A.P. company. A.P. did not like this dog.

This dog did not stay long. His name was "Coco". He liked going around the neighborhood to kill cats and bring them home to show what he did... My sister got rid of that dog. "Coco" was a bird dog. Black Lab.

So A.P. was all alone again. Not to long after "Coco" left. A.P. started to break loose. At one time it was just for a short while... he came back. The second time A.P. was gone for about a week.

We look for him but could not find him. Until one day he came up the street. I had a talk with A.P. He did not listen to me.

The third time A.P. broke loose he was gone for about two weeks. Two of my brothers were out working and A.P. recognized truck and came running after them. A.P. was happy to see them and happy to be home.

I had another long talk with A.P. Yeah, that was the last time he broke loose. Then one day summertime July 2002, a dog came in the neighborhood.

A.P. liked this dog. A.P. let this dog sleep in his house, drink his water and eat his food. A.P. was in love. Yeah, this dog was a female.

The female dog was later named "Babe". There was one thing that A.P. would not let "Babe" have....his biscuits. A.P. loved his biscuits.

Four months later A.P. became a "father" dog.[ Note: I think it takes about 63 days for a dog to have puppies.] There were 8 dogs in all.

Two died within the day of the birth. The other six were 5 boys and 1 girl. Yeah, A.P. helped raised his family. I heard that when it was time to get fed, A.P. made sure that all the other dogs had food first before he would eat.

A.P. would not eat until he knew that all had food when they were puppies. A.P. would bark if it was time to eat. He look after his family. He always wanted his biscuits. He had to have two.

On March 8, 2006 the "Mama dog""Babe" had to be put to sleep. A.P. was left with three "sons dogs and a step son dog". He lived out his happy life.

In May of this year A.P.'s grand daughter came to be with the family... "Sugar Bear". She looks like her grandpa, A.P.

It was about two months ago that A.P. had trouble walking. It got worst last month. The only thing that A.P. had trouble with was his walking. I heard that he eat well during his last days. I knew that he missed his biscuits.

A.P. left me with memories... I saw A.P. one day barking up in the air. I thought to myself, what is he barking at. I looked up and saw an air plane.

It appears that A.P. saw it too. A.P. was a smart dog. Yeah, we got one of A.P.'s offsprings..... "Sister"[she's the black and white dog above.]

She was the only girl of the bunch. "Sister" had six puppies this year. We kept one of them. I named him "Sunny", he's the tan and white dog above. "Sunny" is as big as his mama.

I can see a little of A.P. in his offsprings. In all A.P. was a GOOD DOG. I called him my "nephew dog". So "Sister" is my "great niece "dog. "Sunny" is my 2nd great "nephew "dog.

I share this story with you because I believe that animals are a part of the family. I learned a lot by my dogs and others dogs. They have a personalty too that brings joy into our lives.

God gives us gifts to enjoy. I enjoy my gifts of caring for "Sister", "Sunny" and "Spotty". They are a part of the family. A.P. was too.

What A Year: Family Connections

It's been a very good year in discovering family connections. I'm thankful. I've come across more than what I would have imagine. I still wondering, if I could find more on what I have? I hope so.

I hope that I can make some progress on my Washington, Allen ,Walters Family Connections. I haven't blog on that side of my family. William Washington and Susan Leach Washington's branch of Anna Laura Washington.

Mary Anna Allen  Lankford / Lankfard
1889 - 1975
Anna had a daughter named Mary Anna Allen who married Leo Lankford / Lankfard. They were my Grandparents. Anna had relatives on her parents' side. I hope to find more connections.

My Grandfather, Leo's mother Charlotta DADE is on the branch is on the The Dade Family Connections  In Remembrance for December is on that link.

My Grandmother, Jennie Lyles is on the  The  Bartlett Family Connections
In Remembrance for December is on that link.

My Grandfather,John is on The Blakey / Blakley / WHITE Family Connection.

I've been searching connections on my DNA matches. I'm color coding the matches in groups on Blakey and or White. There are a lot. However, I can't determine who is on which branch without names.

There are some who know that they are on the branch of Blakey or White. I'm on the Blakey Branch through Isaac WHITE Blakey and Martha SCOTT Blakey.

It's interesting that I'm coming across Blakey DNA matches who intermarried or had children with some on my  DADE Family Connections. It's a mystery! This makes me wonder.

I hope that you have a wonderful journey into the Christmas Season and throughout 2020.
May the LORD grant you your heart's desire.
May we shine the light of God in us to those around us.
May we share what we know about our family connections.
May we discover more on our Family Connections.

Merry Christmas!
Happy New 2020!
2020 is a Leap Year.

Thanks for reading.

In Memory of Robert Louis Lankford / Lankfard

Robert Louis Lankfard was described as having the appearance of a fine old gentleman. The  photo below: he has the appearance to be a dignify man. He was handsome and was dressed well.  He was well groomed and had fine clothing. He wore glasses.

Robert Louis Lankfard was born in Washington County in Kentucky on Feb 22, 1852. His parents were from Kentucky. Oral history states that Robert's mother passed away in Canton, Missouri.

Oral history states little about his siblings. He had a half sister named Mamie MORTON who was born in Kentucky. And other sister named Dora (LANKFORD) BROWN..Also, oral history states that Robert left Kentucky due to some family disagreement. Family members lost track of him.

The first known records of Robert was recorded on the 1870 and 1880 He was in Lewis County Missouri. His name was recorded as LEWIS LANGFORD on those census.

On the 1870 census, he was living in the household of Samuel Green and his wife Serilda and their  daughter, Georgia.  Serilda was Lewis' future sister in law. Also, Lewis was living next door to his future sister in law Mary Ann (Dade) Madison.

MARRIAGE
On January 25, 1873, Lewis LANKFORD married Miss Charlotta Dade. Their surname was spelled either LANFORD or LANKFARD. On other census records and city directories his first name was recorded as R. L and or Robert Louis. The first middle name was not spelled Lewis. However, it could have been spelled that way.

His name appeared as Robert L. LANKFORD in 1887 Kansas City Directory.  In other city directories his name was R. Louis in 1890, R.L or Robert L in the St. Joseph, directories.  His surname was spelled LANKFORD and LANKFARD from time to time.   The first time LANKFARD was spelled in 1898 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Robert's surname was spelled LANKFARD from 1898 to 1902. 1911, 1914 - 1919 in the St. Joseph, City Directories. Robert and Charlotta and children came to St. Joseph in 1888.

CHILDREN:
Robert and Charlotta had eleven. Their surname was spelled LANKFORD and LANKFARD.  Most of the descendants spell the family surname LANKFORD.

OCCUPATION / RESIDENCY
Robert was a boatsman, stone mason, Contractor, Builder, an official 1906 Chimney sweeper and a janitor for the City of St. Joseph, Missouri, He owned his own business. He was a landowner.

He was a grader, laborer. He was a proprietor for the Lankford Cafe restaurant . He had advertisements in the Iowa newspaper

Records state that Robert was in Lewis County Missouri during his early adult life.  He married and had children. Later moved to Kansas City, Missouri and St. Joseph, Missouri about 1888.  He lived in Denver Colorado about 1818 / 1919.

According to the census, stated that Robert couldn't read or write.  For someone who was a builder and construction worker, that was amazing.  He must have learned the trade from someone.  He was a fine stone mason.  He was a stone mason in Kansas City, Missouri, St. Joseph, Missouri and Denver Colorado.

BIRTH: HIS DEATH:
Robert was born into slavery. He was about 13 years old when slavery abolished.
Tombstone of Robert Louis LANKFARD and his wife Charlotta.

Robert was born on February 22, 1852 in Kentucky. He was 67 years old at the time of his passing on November 14, 1919 in St. Joseph, Missouri.  His death was recorded in the local news paper. He was listed as an ex-slave and wide known and industrious negro citizen of St. Joseph, MO, a native from Kentucky.

His funeral was held at his resident on 516 N 24th in St. Joseph, Missouri. His remains were laid to rest on November 18, 1919 in St. Joseph, Missouri at Ashland Cemetery.

Robert's cause of death... a fractured left femur due to an accidental fall.  Robert had a terrible fell in 1887 in Canton, Missouri. He was researching a cellar for L. F. Pattern. He was lifting a stone to the arch already place. It gave way and threw Robert down falling on his shin bone.

In 1887, the accident to his leg was described as shin bone crushing it into small bits for servals inches and terribly mutilating the flesh and muscles."

Mr. Robert Louis Lankfard a.k.a Lewis Langford / Lankford
Photo taken in 1892 outside his home with the Lankford/ Lankfard Family in St. Joseph, Missouri.  Robert was about 40 years old in this photo.  His wife and children were standing on his left.  The family dog is in the photo next to Robert.

Giving Thanks For The My DADE, BARTLETT and BBW Family Connections

Our families left behind some things for us to follow. We should honor our ancestors. We can keep their memories alive as we continue to remember them. Thank God for those who have gone on before us. They led the way for us.

I'm being thankful for all the family connections discovering over the years. I couldn't have stumbled across info with our going deeper in the my quest to know more. I believe that there is more to discover.

Our family have connections. The more we reach out to others on our family tree, we could find more on our lineage and may help out others who are connected with our family. I believe each of us have the missed clues to our family tree.

Amazing Discoveries: Some Mysteries Solved

I've stumbled across some clues through searching old newspapers via obituaries/ death notice, and info on the DADE Family. The info was amazing. Through the search, came across another child of Frances and Isaac. She was the wife of Samuel Green. Her name was  Crieldy / Serilda Green

Frances "Frankie" (OVINGTON DADE) passed in April of 1901. This confirms that Frances had a son named Ben DADE. She was known as "Aunt Frankie". She was listed nearing the century mark at her passing.

Isaac Dade passed on Jan 11, 1890 at his daughter Charlotta "Lottie" Lankford / Lankard's home. Lottie lived in St. Joseph, Missouri. He was listed as 85

There was a mystery of one of Louis' and Mary (Venoy) Dade's child, Diana Dade. She run away at the age of 11 or 12 and wasn't heard of until after her passing in 1931. She changed her name to Anna Winfrey. She was the twin of Den Dade.

Here are a few names found in newspaper articles: Bandy Dade, Louise Jane Dade, Mary Ann (Venoy) Dade, Ben Dade, Lucy Dade, Rosa Washington, Essie Mae (Wilson) Fouse, Louis "Lew" Dade, Pearl Dade, Den Dade, Louetta (Robinson) Dade, , Isaac Washington, John Washington, David Washington, Albert Washington, Charles Majors , Robert L. Lankford   / Lankfard, Charlotta (Dade) Lankford / Lankfard, Fred Lankford

In Loving Memory of Maureen Deetra (Jackson) Nave. She passed on Sept 23, 2019. She was the daughter of Ambrose Jackson and Thelma Rowena Lankford.

I'm going back over articles. I'm looking at other family trees. I believe someone has the missing clue to make the connections. I continue to work on my Project Find A Grave and updating the biographies.

Hair Issues

Blog ~ Thursday, 12 July 2007

Hair Issues

Tomorrow Is One Anniversary.

It was on July 13, 1995. I was going to the get my hair fix. At that time I had a Jerry Curl. I grew tried of the Jerry Curl. Through the years decided to return to a perm. I waited a while to make the change. Then that day came for my perm. [The photo was taken in February of 1994. When I had a Jerry Curl.]

I don't know all what goes into the chemical process and so forth for the hair to break down in becoming a perm. The hair stylist notice that my hair was not breaking down as it should have. I have thick hair. So the hairstylist put more chemicals on my hair to make it straight.

To make a long story short.... Something was starting to happening to my hair over a period of a few days. It appeared very thin and very dry looking. It started to break off as I comb my hair. Through the process of a day or so, more hair fell out. I had hair on my scalp as I would comb my hair.

I had a sister in law at that time who knew something about hair. She call me. I told her what the hairstylist did. My sister in law said that ALL MY HAIR COULD FALL OUT because of too much chemicals.

After I got off the phone with her. At first I was silence. But what came out of my mouth as I spoke to God and I quote "I could lose all my hair but I can't lose You, Jesus." Yeah, I started to cry....the thought of LOSING MY HAIR!

Through the days that followed more hair came out. My sister in law at that time was trying to help me with my hair issue. She braided my hair so that there would be less breakage. She discovered that I had a bald spot about the size of a dime on the top of my head. It was noticeable with my hair braided.

I had my hair braided for about two months so. I had so many hair dos back in those days. Even then still more hair come out. I was depressed. I did all that I could to keep my joy. I read out loud from the entire Book of Psalm. I learned that from Pastor L. The psalms are spiritual uplifters for the soul.

There was one major thing that I did though out this ordeal. I prayed and I prayed and I prayed and I prayed. I don't remember all what I did but I recall that I laid hands on my hair. I actually spoke to me hair. I told it that "you will grow. You will not die but live!"

I don't consider myself a "spiritual giant". I did what I did. I did not know what else to do during this issue in my life. I thought about getting a wig. I said "NO!" I want to have my own hair...."the home grown product". I remember when I went to church, I would see babies with a lot of hair. They had more hair on their heads than I lost.

What was so amazing during this time in my life, was when I would go to family gathering, church or other meetings. I did not tell people that I had a hair issue. Some in my family knew and others around me. I remember a family member motioned to me that I had a gray hair. I thought at least that gray hair did not fall out.

But when I went to church only a very very little knew. I had at least two people prayed for me in church. These two people who prayed for me, pick up something in the spirit. One ask me was I depressed? The other ask was I worry?

Yeah, I was....This issue was a trial from July 13, 1995 to about Feb 8, 1996. In that time spand, I did not want any hair stylist to touch my hair. I though about going back to an Afro. I came to my senses in February. I allowed someone to look at my hair. My hair was a total mess.

[Footnote: I did not wear hats in those days. This was also the time, I was about getting ready to join the WOLC special choir. I was going through this issue with my hair while doing something that would get my mind off my troubles at that time.]

In February of 1996, the hairstylist said that she could do something with my hair. But my hair had to be cut. That was the shortest hair cut that I have ever had. Through the many months ahead, my hair grow back. I had many hair dos as the years went by. I had a thought of when I was in the choir. If anyone would look back at the archives, they would notices all those many different hairs dos that I had.

The photo below is of me in November of 1998.

This was the time that I had the desire for hats. I made that discovery and started to like them. I might share that story on how I got inspired to wear hats. Who knows, I might even share how many hats I have in my collection. Some of my hats were given to me.

Back to my hair issue... By 2001 till now, I had more hair issues. That was related to the attack of Lupus in 2001 and 2004. I decided not to get a perm because I had to be on chemo for six months during both years.

In 2001 and 2004, I thought it would be wise to lay of perms for about 6 - 10 months while I was on chemo for six months during those years. The kidney doctor told me that I could loose all my hair from the chemo.

But by the grace of God, I did not lose any hair from my scalp during any time when I was on chemo. The only hair that I believe that came off my head was the hair that broke off because I stop getting a perm. My hair grew back. I believe that is still growing back.

Back then, after the first hair issue, some times I thought that I cannot never have a bad hair day. After all what I have been through! But when my hair kept getting shorter and shorter and shorter forming into an Afro, I started to wear hats a lot more during the 2004 year. I had to get use to short hair again. It's not that I have a bad hair day.

Then there was something going on with my hair starting the last two summers, especially last year after the shingles issue. My hair started to break off. Some of my friends said you cut your hair!

At times I didn't say anything. I thought to myself, "it's a new look." I may have needed a change back then. I was introducing a new me.

I believe that I have been growing in the Lord since this issue. In the way that I needed to change and believe that God will comfort me and guide me through. I believe that God brought me through in times of not knowing. He is a Great Comforter.

There are some things that I have experienced by going through this hair issue in LIFE. Through my pursuit in God's help, I become closer to Him. I had other issues going on in my life as well during this time. Through the comfort of His words, His presence and the longing to keep going, that keep me in tact. I believe that only God could have keep me going and brought me through this time in my life.

I set in my thinking, it's not matter the length of my hair that counts. It's the length of time that I have in Jesus that matter to me the most. With or without my hair I believe that I will make it. I prefer my own hair though. And I got to have Jesus in my life.

In the word of God, there's a verse that says that He knows the numbers of hair that I have on my head. God cares even about my hair that He numbered them. That comforts my soul. I thank God for blessing me with hair.

May you grow through whatever issue that comes your way. May you realize that no matter what you're facing,Jesus is the most important factor than your issue in life.

Stumbling Across More Family Connections

Welcome!

I continue to search whatever resources that I can. I've been searching old newspaper articles. I have found some photos of relatives. There were birth announcements, obituaries, cards of thanks, marriage and divorce filed. Every little info adds to the family history.

I wish all the best in the 2nd quarter of 2019.
Thanks for reading.
God Bless you.

I came across another DNA cousin. This cousin is on the Benjamin DADE Family Connections. Benjamin, son of Isaac and Frances (OVRINGTO) DADE. Ben and Lucy had a daughter named Martha (DADE) CARTER. She  married Lewis CARTER. They had a daughter named Melvina (CARTER) HAWKINS. She married Charles Edward HAWKINS.

I haven't added Martha (CARTER) HAWKIN's descendants to this "In Remembrance." There are so many of them.  Martha and Lewis had eight children. I have to sort through what I have. And it's odd that I only have one DNA match to this Benjamin DADE.  I came across someone who said that they were connected with Martha (DADE) CARTER. They didn't take the DNA test.

I haven't come across new birth or death info to add to this In Remembrance list.
Last  month, I came across new leads from a marriage record.
Name:Mr. Elias Bartley
Marriage Date:29 Dec 1876
Marriage Place:Carroll, Missouri, USA
Spouse:Harriet Hughes

I'm not for sure if this couple is Elias Bartlett and Harriet Buffington.  I recall when my Grandmother, Jennie Bartlett remarried my Grandfather, John Blakye in 1902 , her maiden name was spell Bartle.

Harriett had may have had several names. Hooper, Fisher, Buffington and, Hughes.
Hooper on daughter Juanita (Bartlett) Armstrong's 1929 death record.
Fisher on Paul Bartlett's  1936 Social Security Application And Claims Index
Buffington on Lucy E. (Bartlett) Horan's 1939 Social Security Application And Claims Index
Hughes on the Missouri marriage record in 1876.

Making More Discovers: Marching On With Clues

Welcome To The Month Of March!

I hope all who are searching are still marching along to the clues that you are stumbling across. I have been. And the hardest thing is, when we hit a brick wall. The clues just hang there.

I move on to other things. I search newspapers or google. I try do to keep looking at brick walls. It's a waste of time. We have to use judgments to know when to stop.

The Winter Season is coming to a close.

The Heart Of Searching For Family Connections

Welcome To February!

I can't recall when the inspiration for me to search for my family connections begin. Though the years, my heart of searching for family connections has grown. I've been connecting other family members to one another. Thank You, Jesus!

I pray that others who are searching and those who will have the desire to search for their family connections, will reach out to others so that they will discover more on their family history. There are a lot of people who don't know where to search searching.

I'm  thankful that there are people who are taking the DNA test. I've have more DNA cousins that I didn't know about. DNA is a good place to start your journey. It's helpful to start a family tree as well.

Thanks for reading.
God bless you.

Welcome to Twenty Nineteen!
Greetings to the New Year!

I have found some new clues in 2018. I was overwhelmed by what I've stumbled across.  I came across obituaries, photos and articles. These discoveries bring out the life of our relatives.
