13 Years Later: The Frances (OVINGTON) DADE Family Connections

On May 8th 2010, I logged in to ancestry.com. I came across someone who was searching for a connection with Dade family. This person is  was looking for "Janie " Jane (DADE) WASHINGTON lineage.

I checked the Missouri death records between 1910-1959 for a Jane WASHINGTON. I came up with a Louisa Jane WASHINGTON. According to an Isaac and John WASHINGTON, Louisa was born in March of 1817 in KY.

Louisa Jane WASHINGTON's parents were an Isaac DADE from VA and a Frances unknown surname from KY. I saw the connection when I read the parents name. I saw this as "Another Frances (OVINGTON) DADE Connection."

Back in 2010 I had come across...
On Frances' 4 known children's death records: The parents' names were Isaac DADE and Frances / Frankie. Charlotta's death record was the only one that mentioned Frances' maiden name as OVINGTON.

And since this blog I have come across three more children of Frances.
Benjamin "Ben" DADE Sr,
Isaac DADE Jr. aka Isaac DAYD and
 Crieldy / Cyridla DADE GREEN

Frances "Frankie" OVINGTON DADE
She was the wife of Isaac DADE (1805  - 1890)
She was the mother of 14 children.
She was listed as 101 on the 1900 MO census.

Louisa Jane "Janie" (DADE) WASHINGTON
She was born in Mar of 1826 in KY and passed on 21 April 1910 in MO
She was married to David WASHINGTON Sr.
She was the mother of 13.

Benjamin "Ben" DADE

He was born in about 1829 and passed 16 Dec of 1906.
He was married twice. First wife's name could have been Eliza.
His second wife was Lucy (SAMPSON) DADE.
Lucy was the mother of  15 children, 6 were living at the time of the 1900 census.

Mary Ann DADE MADISON
She was born on 16 Nov 1836 in KY and passed on  24 Dec 1921 in MO
She was married to George MADISON and was the mother of 7.

Isaac DADE Jr. / Isaac DAYD

He was born about 1844 in ?  MO and passed 27 May 1909 in Illinois
.He was married to  Louisa MONSON, she was the mother of 6.
Isaac was also listed as married to a Lena (1867 -1902) and a Russell. (1845 - 1901)

Louis Newton "Lew" "Old Bone" DADE
He was born on 16 Oct 1847in MO and passed on 18 Feb 1937 in MO.
He married Mary Ann VENOY and she was the mother of 11.

Crieldy / Cyridla (DADE) GREEN

(1851 - 1884)
She was the wife of Samuel "Uncle Sam" GREEN.
They had 2 daughters.

Charlotta (DADE)"Lottie" LANKFORD / LANKFARD
She was born in Jan 1852 and passed on  3 April 1924 in NY
She married Robert Louis LANKFORD / LANKFARD and was the mother of 11.

Frances had 7 other children unaccounted for.
Seven were living when the 1900 census was taken.

Possible children:

Ben (Beny) Dade born about 1838 in MO.
Francis (Dade) Williams,
George Dade.
Mildred (Dade) Hardin

Searched Census To Identify Harriett And Her Three Children

 Searching From What’s Known
Harriet’s future husband, Elias W. Bartlett Sr. was listed with his first wife, Rachel on the 1870 Missouri Census in Carroll County. Question: Where was Harriett and the other three Bartlett children who were born before the 1870 census was taken?

On November 7, 2022, I began to search for Harriett on the 1870 Carroll County Missouri census. I searched for every black Harriett born in Missouri around 1849 and one by one, I looked to see if there were key names in the same household. Those key names were her Grandmother Hannah and three children, Sallie, Charles, and Lucy.

The Newest Discovery

Actually, this is an old discovery that became new once I saw it again. I came across the household of HESLIN before. I didn’t see the connection then. But, the second time around, I was filled with joy when I saw the names Hannah, Harriett and Sally, Charles and Lucy. This was confirmation.

Harriett BARTLETT’s and her three children’s ages were similar to the 1880 census. However, Hannah was listed as born in North Carolina on the 1870 census at age 80. But on the 1880 census Hannah was born in South Carolina and her age was at 115. This is 35 years older in ten years.

I believe that this Harriet, her children and her Grandmother, Hannah are the ones that I’ve been searching for. They were listed with William HESLIN born in 1810 in Kentucky. He who was head of house. Hannah B. HESLIN born in 1790 North Carolina.( Note that Harriett had a grandmother by the name of Hannah HOOPER on the 1880 Missouri census in Carrollton County Missouri.)

It appears that Elias W. Bartlett Sr. was not the father of Sally, Charles and Lucy. This would make sense, if they weren’t listed with him on the 1870 Missouri census. It appears that the three children took the Bartlett surname. I wonder what were their surname?

What’s Next?
Ironically, I can’t locate the family with the Heslin surname on the 1880 census for Carroll County Missouri. I’m wondering. Is there another way to spell that surname? Could Helsin have been their enslaved surname? Also note that I have found Sally, Charles and Lucy were listed as mulatto on other records.

Sarah “Sallie’s maiden name was Shaw. This came from an Ohio 1919 marriage record of Myrtle Younger, daughter of Sarah “Sallie”. The Shaw name is something to look into.

Crop photo of the 1870 United States Federal Census For Harriet HELSIN, Missouri, Carroll County.

Questions And Wonder:
Who was Harriett ( BUFFINGTON / HOOPER BARTLETT?
She was my Great Grandmother, Harriett. My father’s David’s grandmother.
I wonder if Hannah could have been Harriett’s great grandmother.

The Mariah HELSIN was born in North Carolina in 1830. She was Williams’ daughter .
Was William HELSIN Hannah’s son?
Or if Williams’ wife was Hannah’s daughter?
Wonder if Sophiah, Harriett and Allen were siblings?

I wonder if Hannah’s surname was Buffington?
Listed as Hannah B. HELSIN on the 1870 census. Harriett’s maiden name was listed as Buffington on her daughter, Lucy’s social security application in 1939.

Week 8 ~ Amy Johnson Crow #52Ancestors in 52 Weeks ~ Generations CafĂ©

The theme for Week 8 is “I Can Identify.” Genealogy research is about identifying the correct people to attach to our family trees. Who have you worked hard to identify? Another way to interpret the theme would be to highlight someone like my grandfather, who could spot (and correctly identify all kinds of mushrooms. (My sisters and I never got the knack of doing that!)

In Memory Of Delia Lewis

I was overwhelm when I discovered this rare obituary of my Great Grandmother Delilah. There’s a lot of data presented. I’ve been sorting through the information and searching for leads. What did I get out of this obituary?

The source of obituary came be found at St. Joseph Daily Herald – Apr 24, 1887
It’s on page 4, third column near middle.

My translation of Mrs. Delilah Lewis’s obituary.

Mrs. Delila “Lillie” ( ? ) LEWIS passed at her son in law, William Washington at 1801 Mulberry Street in St. Joseph, Missouri; on Tuesday, April 19th, 1887 at 4:45 pm.

Delilah was born in Franklin, Williamson County Tennessee and was raised in Kentucky.
She was moved to Franklin, (Howard County) Missouri.
(Don’t know the time frame from which State to State.)

It was when she was moved to Liberty, Clay County, she was sold to Priestley EDWARDS
And she was with him for about 25 and 30 years. (Is this 55 years with the enslaver EDWARDS? )

Then she was hired out to William LANE for ten years.
(I assume that within the years with EDWARDS, Delilah was hired out.)

Delilah was moved with Peyton TOWNSEND to Saline County, Missouri until after the rebellion in 1861. (I’m assuming that this city in Saline was Blackwater, Missouri area.)

She moved to St. Joseph, (Buchanan County) Missouri in 1878 with William Washington.

Delilah was a member of the Baptist church and had been for fifty years
(She passed in 1887 and minus 50 would be the year 1837 with the Baptist Church.)

Delila was still in the service of the Lord ( before the time of her death)
If she was born in 1773 and passed in 1887, she would have been about 113.

I’m in the process of making time line from Delila’s paper trail.
The enslavers names do exit in the counties in Missouri.

Other Questions and Assumptions
Who was Delila’s daughter? Mrs. William Washington; Susan (Leach) Washington.
The 1880 and 1870 Missouri censuses has Susan’s birth years as 1835 and 1845 in Missouri.
She could have been born in either in Franklin , Missouri or Liberty, Missouri.
Susan was most likely born around 1835; her 1890 obituary stated that she was 54 at time of death.

There were three sources of Delila’s birth year.
On the 1870 Missouri census at about 1810 at age 60
On the 1880 Missouri census at about 1787 at age 93
On her 1887 obituary at 1773, she would have about 113

Delilah most likely born between 1790 – 1810.
If born in 1810 she would have been 25 when Susan was born.
Or if Delila was born in 1790 Delila would have been 45.

Could Delilah at age 62 give birth to Susan in 1835?

Delila was likely to have had other children.
She was a widow at the time of her death.

I’m working on another blog on “Data From Delila Lewis’ 1887 Obituary”.
It’s the paper trail from Tennessee to Missouri and the oral history that was passed down.
The enslavers’ whereabouts will lead to where Delila was.

Thanks for reading.

Living In The Shadow Of William Washington

In the beginning, I knew very little about my Washington Family Connections. I made some discoveries from what my mother told me and what material she had on her family. And through years of searching, I came across more on the family through the name of William Washington in the city of St. Joseph, Missouri. William was well, know during his time.

William Washington married his first wife, Miss Susan Leach on September 20, 1866 in St Joseph, Missouri. They were my 2nd great grandparents. They had 5 daughters and a son.

Living In The Shadow Of William Washington And the address of 1801 Mulberry Street

Susan was the daughter of Delilah Lewis. Susan’s name was never mentioned in any of the city directories She was hard to trace. Susan and her family were living in the shadow of William Washington.

When Susan’s mother, Delilah Lewis passed in April of 1887, William was mentioned. Susan’s was not. When William’s and Susan’s son, James drowned at the 102 River in July of 1889. William’s name was mentioned. Susan’s was not.

When Susan passed in January of 1890, she was listed Mrs. William Washington. When Virginia “Jennie” Washington passed in February of 1897, she was listed as the daughter of William Washington.

The crop postcard photo is of what I believe to be, a photo some of the Washington Family.
From left to right: seated are Susan, her husband William and the elderly lady was Delilah, Susan’s mother. The oldest daughter, Anna (behind William,) was my Great Grandmother, Anna Laura. (Photo colorized and repaired via My Heritage.)

There is little known of the other daughters of William and Susan. However, through searching, I discovered more about their daughter, Anna Laura (Washington) Allen Walters. As for Anna’s first husband William Allen, his life is a mystery. Perhaps he was living in someone’s shadow.

Now, I’m wondering about Susan’s siblings. I believe that she wasn’t the only child of Delilah. Delilah lived to be at least 100. Delilah’s 1887 obituary stated that she was about 113.

I continue searching for the Tivis Family Connections. I’m finding shadows there as well. Women were hidden behind their husband’s names. It’s hard to trace women.

Week 44 ~ Amy Johnson Crow ~ Generations CafĂ© #52Ancestors 52 Weeks ~ facebook group.
This week’s theme is “Shadows.” There are some ancestors who seem to hide in darkness, whose stories are hard to tease out. There are also people who “live in the shadow” of someone else. This week, shine some light on one of those ancestors

Updating Family Connections: Gathering The Generations

I have been on a pause on searching on the Family Connections: Gathering The Generations. I continue to do my weekly challenge of #52Ancestors in 52 weeks.  This is where I journal about my parents' ancestors and relatives and post weekly.

Also, I've been going back over the In Remembrance for the month. I've been updating them. I'm in the process of re arranging what I have been doing for years. I'm going by days of birth and death dates. It's a task in doing. But, I see this as a good thing to do.

Here's are some examples: In Remembrance:

February In Remembrance Dade Family Connections.

February In Remembrance: Bartlett Family Connections

February In Remembrance Blakey Blakley WHITE Family Connections

I will start back up on my search. I continue to check my DNA matches and obituaries. I'm still looking for clues. I hope to connect the dots in the years to come.

Thanks for reading.
