The Jennie Bartlett Lyle Connections: Miss Hazel V. Blakley

Miss Hazel V. Blakley
1915 - 1933
Hazel was the daughter of John (Blakey) Blakley and Jennie (Bartlett)  Blakley Lyle. Hazel was born on  January 23, 1915 in St. Joseph, Missouri. She passed away on Sept 16, 1933 in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Little is known about Hazel. From what my father told me, he was by Hazel's side when she passed. According to her death record, she died for an self inflicted wound.

Story has it that Hazel was pregnant... I recall my mother saying that someone told Hazel to drink something to get the swallowing down on her stomach. The baby that she was carrying was said to have been a cousin. Some how the idea to have an abortion must have came up.

Hazel was single. She was a school girl. She was 18 years old when she passed away. Hazel was living at the same address of a Mary Gudgells on 1819 Dalton in St. Joseph, Missouri. Mary Gudgells was the informant on the death record.

Precede in Hazel's death by her parents, 5 sisters and 2 brothers. She was survived by 6 brothers and 2 sisters, a Step father, Chilton F. Lyle. Aunts and Uncles and numerous cousins. Hazel was buried in the City Cemetery in St. Joseph, Missouri. Here's Hazel's memorial on Find A Grave.

The Julia White Connections: John White

What can I write about John White who was born into slavery? Over the years, I didn't realize that there was a John White, the slave on the Blakey / White Family Tree. I mean, I always thought that there was a John Blakey who was a slave. But through research that John Blakey was John White.

In the mid 1970's I came across an article about  Slaveryt Descendants To Have First  Reunion in 1970 in Iowa. In that article, John Blakey was mention. I thought that that John Blakey was the father of my Grandpa John.

The story goes, the Slave Family were to be sold. John, the slave born and his older brother, Isaac Blakey were sold to a man with the Blakey surname. They were sent to Forest Green, Missouri.

As I did some search through the years, I did not found a John Blakey who was a slave. As I keep searching, there were things that didn't match up. I though, Who was John Blakey?

I came to this conclusion. John took the White surname. As for the Blakey surname, Isaac was the only one in his slave family that carried the Blakey surname. Besides, it dawned on me. That's why I couldn't find anything on John.

I began searching for John White and came up with some things. I have located his death record in Missouri. John was born about June of 1858 in Missouri. I've come across two other birth years. They were 1854 and 1866. I believe that the year about 1858 was the year. John passed away on September 10, 1918 in Salisbury, Missouri. He was buried in Forest Green, Missouri.

John's parents were Andrew White and Julia White. John's death record is the only one that mentions both Andrew White and Julia White as his parents. On John's brother, Isaac Blakey's death record only mentions Andrew White as father. His mother was unknown.

John was married to Katherine / Katie Estell. (1863 - 1923) John and Katie had about 9 children. On the 1920 MO Census, Katie had a granddaughter, Louise White and grandson Leo Kayson (White) listed with her

Here's a list of the children, I've come across.

Earnest White born about 1881
Leburter White born about 1884
Irina / Arena / Irene White born about 1892
Alice White born about 1883
Erma/ Ermma White born about 1898.
There were 4 Unknown Children that died before 1900

I haven't come across any of John's descendants. I believe that there were offspring. I hope that some one on this lineage will began the search for John White and Katie Estell.

Project: The Julia White Connections

I've have a list of Julia's children in whom I've little information on. It was more of a task to find Julia's children. Indeed it has been a project. Here are the list of children that I've found very little information on. The sources came from census records, and a slave ad and a marriage record.

Names                                            Source of Julia's Children
Unknown White  born VA            (1880 Census Granddaughter)
Linda White        born MO 1841  (Slave Ad 1858)
Mary White        born MO 1844   (Slave Ad 1858)
Ben White           born MO 1849   (Slave AD 1858)
Andrew White     born MO 1849   (A Researcher)
Lydia White        born MO 1852   (A Researcher)
David White        born MO 1858   (1880 Census)
Joshua White      born MO 1860   (1880 Census)
Martha White     born MO 1862   (1880 Census)

I have searched for each of this children in the Howard County and Chariton County area. I can't locate or find connections to Linda, Ben, Andrew, Lydia, David, and Martha. Only that Martha who was a widow.

Joshua White was said to have had 3 children. Three daughters and one son. The son's was named John Blake. John was raised by a family with the surname of Blake.

I did locate a Mary White. I'm not for sure if she is the one I'm looking for. I see that a Abram Harriss married a Mary White in Chariton County, MO.

I believe that Julia's children did keep in contact with family members. Julia's children lived in the Chariton and Howard County Area in Missouri.

I'm working on future blogs on the following...
I've posted Mattie White

I'm still searching. I hope that someone on the White Lineage will search as well. Hopefully some day there will be some connections. I hope so.
